Heterotopic Ossification: Cellular Basis, Symptoms, And Treatment, Brian Wolfe
Heterotopic Ossification: Cellular Basis, Symptoms, And Treatment, Brian Wolfe
Senior Honors Theses
Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the process by which calcified bone develops in soft tissues. Because of the abnormal calcification, complications such as bone deformation, loss of range of motion, and joint immobility adversely affect patients. There are many genetic types of heterotopic ossification, namely fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, progressive osseous heteroplasia, and Albright hereditary osteodystrophy. However, this condition can also arise from surgery, burns, or traumatic injuries, so it is seen as an important area for research in the future. There are various treatments available such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and radiation therapy, as well as combinations of the two. The …

Costal cartilage is much understudied compared with the load-bearing cartilages. Abnormally grown costal cartilages are associated with the inherited chest wall deformities pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum resulting in sunken and pigeon chests, respectively. A lack of understanding of the ultrastructural and molecular biology of costal cartilage is a major confounder in predicting causes and outcomes of these disorders. This study analyzed the structure of marginal human costal cartilage (ribs 6-10) through scanning electron and atomic force microscopes and identified the presence of straw-like structures running longitudinally. We also demonstrated that chondrocytes tend to occur singly or as doublets and …

Decision Quality Instrument For Treatment Of Hip And Knee Osteoarthritis: A Psychometric Evaluation, Karen R. Sepucha, Dawn Stacey, Catharine F. Clay, Yuchiao Chang
Dartmouth Scholarship
A high quality decision requires that patients who meet clinical criteria for surgery are informed about the options (including non-surgical alternatives) and receive treatments that match their goals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties and clinical sensibility of a patient self report instrument, to measure the quality of decisions about total joint replacement for knee or hip osteoarthritis.
Femoroacetabular Impingement: Saving The Joint, Ronald Huang, Javad Parvizi
Femoroacetabular Impingement: Saving The Joint, Ronald Huang, Javad Parvizi
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers
Many factors have been linked to the development of osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip, but often, cases are still considered “idiopathic.” Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) has been suggested as a possible etiologic factor for the otherwise “idiopathic” cases. It is theorized that the subtle morphologic abnormalities seen at the head-neck junction and acetabulum in FAI may lead to labral tears, chondral damage, and subsequent progression of OA. Prevalence of FAI has been suggested to be as high as 14% in the general population. It often presents in young active patients that subject their hip joint to repetitive micro trauma associated with …

Natural History Study Of Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, Amyoplasia Type, Trisha Nichols
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Arthrogryposis or Arthrogrypsosis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) are terms used to describe the clinical finding of multiple congenital contractures. There are more than 300 distinct disorders associated with arthrogryposis. Amyoplasia is the most common type of arthrogryposis and is often referred to as the “classic” type. There is no known cause of amyoplasia and no risk factors have been identified. Moreover, there is no established diagnostic criteria, which has led to inconsistency and confusion in the medical literature. The purpose of this study was to describe the natural history of amyoplasia, to determine if there are any identifiable risk factors and …
Effect Of Calcium Supplements On Risk Of Myocardial Infarction And Cardiovascular Events: Meta-Analysis, Mark J. Bolland, Allison Avenell, John A. Baron, A. Grey
Effect Of Calcium Supplements On Risk Of Myocardial Infarction And Cardiovascular Events: Meta-Analysis, Mark J. Bolland, Allison Avenell, John A. Baron, A. Grey
Dartmouth Scholarship
Objective: To investigate whether calcium supplements increase the risk of cardiovascular events.
Osteoporosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in older people. Calcium supplements margin- ally reduce the risk of fracture, and most guidelines recommend adequate calcium intake as an integral part of the prevention or treatment of osteoporosis. Consequently, calcium supplements are commonly used by people over the age of 50. Observational stu- dies suggest that high calcium intake might protect against vascular disease, and the findings are consis- tent with those of interventional studies of calcium sup- plements thatshow improvementin some vascular risk factors. In contrast, …

Determination Of Sphk1 In The Development Of A Murine Model Of Inflammatory Arthritis, Deanna Andrea Baker
Determination Of Sphk1 In The Development Of A Murine Model Of Inflammatory Arthritis, Deanna Andrea Baker
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have an over production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, especially TNFα, causing joint erosions and disability in untreated patients. Targeted therapies have had some success but are not without side effects and limitations; additionally, patients become refractory to treatment, and are obligated to use a combination of therapies. Therefore, new therapeutics are necessary. One novel target is sphingolipids, specifically sphingosine kinase 1 (SphK1). Previous research has demonstrated that knockdown/knockout of SphK1 influences the production of inflammatory mediators (i.e. COX-2 and PGE2) in vitro and in vivo. Since sphingosine 1 phosphate (S1P) receptors are upregulated in RA synovium, …

Development And Validation Of An Index Of Musculoskeletal Functional Limitations, Jeffrey N. Katz, Elizabeth A. Wright, John A. Baron, Elena Losina
Dartmouth Scholarship
While musculoskeletal problems are leading sources of disability, there has been little research on measuring the number of functionally limiting musculoskeletal problems for use as predictor of outcome in studies of chronic disease. This paper reports on the development and preliminary validation of a self administered musculoskeletal functional limitations index.

Results Of A "Stages Of Change" Pilot Survey From An Osteoporosis Prevention Outreach Program, Amy S. Gray
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Osteoporosis is a serious health problem and crippling condition that often results in premature mortality and significant morbidity that may be manifested in the form of fractures, bone deformity, and pain. Osteoporosis affects almost 44 million people in the United States, 80% of whom are women. The purpose of this project was to test a pilot survey using the Stages of Change Model for health behaviors that may affect the risk of osteoporosis. Current research is lacking in use of the Stages of Change model for studying behaviors related to the prevention and reducing the risk of osteoporosis. Three surveys …

Job Accommodation In The Automobile Industry : Addressing The Problem Of Lateral Epicondylitis, Thanigaivel Ashwin Raj
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Cumulative trauma disorders are musculoskeletal problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff tendinitis, and epicondylitis which can affect assembly line workers. The injuries are thought to result from repetitive motions performed under excessive loads in anomalous postures. The project aimed to design, build, install, and evaluate worksite accommodation at the Saturn plant for a worker with right lateral epicondylitis. The goal was to make her fully functional in her original team which required addressing the injurious aspects of the task that caused or aggravated her injury.
A process of observation, interview, and analysis identified “the door mount” operation on …

Selenium And Sheep Health, B J. Gabbedy, A. J. Hadlow
Selenium And Sheep Health, B J. Gabbedy, A. J. Hadlow
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
For many years selenium was known to the livestock industries only because of its toxic properties. Some soils, particularly in the United States of America, were so high in selenium that many animals died after grazing plants on these soils.
In 1957 it was discovered that selenium supplements could prevent a number of diseases and, from that time, selenium has been regarded as an essential trace element.
White muscle disease (WMD) was first recognised in sheep in Western Australia in 1960 and has occurred each year since.
