Septic Arthritis Suspected But Pseudogout Confirmed: The Importance Of Early Joint Aspiration And Crystal Analysis, Munazzah Kaleem, Jose Lozano

North Texas GME Research Forum 2026

BACKGROUND/ INTRODUCTION: Septic arthritis present as an acute monoarticular arthritis and is highly suspected in patients with risk factors including DM, ESRD, and bacteremia. As a result, empiric antibiotics are usually started prior to definitive diagnosis. But crystal induced arthropathies closely mimic septic arthritis in their presentation. This case highlights the importance of early arthrocentesis to avoid unnecessary antibiotic treatment.

CASE PRESENTATION: 50-year-old female on antibiotics for MSSA bacteremia presented due to acute onset left hip pain, swelling and decreased range of motion. No trigger was present. PMH included HTN, T2DM and ESRD on HD. She denied fever, chills or …

Parvovirus B19 Infection In Kidney Transplant Recipients, Hatem Najar, Kiran Goli, Maria P. Martinez Cantarin

Division of Nephrology Faculty Papers

On August 14, 2024, the Centers for Disease Control issued a Health Alert Network (HAN) health advisory due to a surge in Parvovirus B19 (B19V) infections in the United States. Our report presents two cases of suspected donor-derived Parvovirus B19 infection in kidney transplant patients. Both cases had refractory anemia requiring treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin. These cases highlight the importance of awareness and monitoring of B19V infection in the context of recent epidemiologic trends to improve clinical outcomes in kidney transplant recipients.

Mimicking Malignancy: A Case Of Non-Traumatic Myositis Ossificans In The Calf, Fatima Safi, Artur Amirkhanyan, Amnah Andrabi, Madeline Doucet

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Objective: This case report highlights the diagnostic challenges of non-traumatic myositis ossificans (MO), a rare benign heterotopic ossifying lesion, and emphasizes its potential to mimic malignancy. Case Presentation: An 18-year-old female with no trauma history presented with a one-month history of progressive right calf pain, ankle weakness (4/5 strength), and difficulty ambulating. Initial ultrasound suggested a hematoma, but the persistence of symptoms prompted advanced imaging. CTA revealed arterial extravasation, while MRI identified a heterogeneously enhancing soleus muscle mass, raising suspicion for sarcoma. Core biopsy demonstrated focal bone formation, mitotically active stroma, and a "zone phenomenon" (central cellularity with peripheral osteoid …

This study investigated the effect of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) for fibromyalgia-like symptoms including chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and/or gait impairment in twenty-five individuals with long-COVID. Participants were randomized to a high dose (intervention group, IG) or low dose (placebo group, PG) TENS device. Both groups received daily 3-5 h of TENS therapy for 4-weeks. The Brief Pain Inventory assessed functional interference from pain (BPI-I), and pain severity (BPI-S). The global fatigue index (GFI) assessed functional interference from fatigue. Wearable technology measured gait parameters during three 30-feet consecutive walking tasks. At 4-weeks, the IG exhibited a greater decrease …

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines recommend low-molecular-weight heparin for thromboprophylaxis after orthopaedic trauma. However, recent evidence suggests that aspirin is similar in efficacy and safety. To understand patients' experiences with these medications, we compared patients' satisfaction and out-of-pocket costs after thromboprophylaxis with aspirin versus low-molecular-weight heparin.

METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of the PREVENTion of CLots in Orthopaedic Trauma (PREVENT CLOT) trial, conducted at 21 trauma centers in the U.S. and Canada. We included adult patients with an operatively treated extremity fracture or a pelvic or acetabular fracture. Patients were randomly assigned to receive 30 mg of low-molecular-weight heparin (enoxaparin) …

Introduction: The BIOFIRE Joint Infection (JI) Panel is a diagnostic tool that uses multiplex-PCR testing to detect microorganisms in synovial fluid specimens from patients suspected of having septic arthritis (SA) on native joints or prosthetic joint infections (PJIs). Methods: A study was conducted across 34 clinical sites in 19 European and Middle Eastern countries from March 2021 to June 2022 to assess the effectiveness of the BIOFIRE JI Panel. Results: A total of 1527 samples were collected from patients suspected of SA or PJI, with an overall agreement of 88.4 % and 85 % respectively between the …

Outpatient Fall Prevention In Ambulatory Adults 65 Years Old And Over, Dorothy L. Osborne-White

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive

Background: In the United States (U.S.), falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and over, resulting in 36 million falls yearly (Moreland et al., 2020). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023), one in four older adults experiences a fall each year. Falls are the world's second most prominent cause of accidental deaths (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among older adults (Moreland et al., 2020).

Methods: A quality improvement project that included a fall bundle was implemented in a primary clinic. A …
