The Impact Of Local Physiology On The Corrosion Of Orthopedic Alloys, Madison Nicole Brown Jan 2024

The Impact Of Local Physiology On The Corrosion Of Orthopedic Alloys, Madison Nicole Brown

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Introduction. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is used in the treatment of end-stage osteoarthritis of the knee. It is one of the most common elective surgeries performed with predictions expecting significant increases in the number of procedures performed over the next decade. However, the patient satisfaction rate after TKA is as low as 80%. Cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) is regularly used for TKA protheses due to the alloy’s mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of this alloy relies on a passive oxide layer. This oxide layer can be impacted by phagocytic cells which can leave pits and craters on implant …

A Unique Case Of Spontaneous Pectoral Abscess, Martin Sentmanat, Zachary Shields, David Ross

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Pyomyositis is a rare disease that is often misdiagnosed. Formerly more common in tropic areas, it has been more prevalent in temperate climates in the past couple of decades. Most cases of pyomyositis have a known cause or the patient is immunocompromised, but there are a few documented cases of spontaneous pyomyositis in an otherwise healthy patient. Our case describes a 35-year-old male with no past medical history or history of IV drug use who presented to the emergency department with right sided chest pain. The patient was initially seen and diagnosed with a pectoral muscle strain and fever. He …

Outpatient Fall Prevention In Ambulatory Adults 65 Years Old And Over, Dorothy L. Osborne-White

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive

Background: In the United States (U.S.), falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and over, resulting in 36 million falls yearly (Moreland et al., 2020). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023), one in four older adults experiences a fall each year. Falls are the world's second most prominent cause of accidental deaths (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among older adults (Moreland et al., 2020).

Methods: A quality improvement project that included a fall bundle was implemented in a primary clinic. A …

The Splice Index As A Prognostic Biomarker Of Strength And Function In Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1, Marina Provenzano Jan 2024

The Splice Index As A Prognostic Biomarker Of Strength And Function In Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1, Marina Provenzano

Theses and Dissertations

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a slowly progressive, multisystem disorder caused by a CTG repeat expansion in the DMPK 3’UTR that leads to global dysregulation of alternative splicing. The resulting decline in physical function is slow, and no reliable biomarkers exist for predicting disease progression; however, an RNA mis-splicing biomarker associated with weakness may have utility in predicting functional outcomes. Here we validate the Splice Index (SI) as a potential biomarker of DM1-associated strength and function. Muscle biopsies of the tibialis anterior were collected from DM1-affected individuals at baseline (n = 46) and 3-months (n = 34), along with …

Bilateral Spontaneous Osteonecrosis Of The Knee (Sponk) In Young Male: A Case Report, Hans Drawbert, Mason Poffenbarger, Joshua Payne

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Introduction: Spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee (SPONK) is a relatively uncommon disease consisting of a focal, subchondral lesion thought to be a subchondral insufficiency fracture that has progressed to collapse and may lead to end-stage osteoarthritis of the knee. There are several treatment options, including nonsurgical and surgical measures but almost 80% of cases end up requiring surgery, usually consisting of unicompartmental or total knee arthroplasty. However, despite these treatment options, there remains no good option for young patients who present with SPONK in large areas of their distal femur or disease in both medial and lateral condyles. Case …

Ossifying Fibroma And Central Giant Cell Granuloma, A Hybrid Tumor In The Maxilla, Jason Phung, Robert Bender, Susana Ferra

East Florida Division GME Research Day 2024

Introduction: Ossifying fibromas (OF) and central giant cell granulomas (CGCG) are benign lesions of the jaw. The presence of a hybrid lesion consisting of OF and CGCG is exceedingly rare.

Case summary: A 28-year-old male presented with complaints of nasal congestion and loud snoring worsening over six months. CT scan revealed a 2.2 x 1.5 x 1.2 cm radiolucent lesion involving the right maxillary sinus. During endoscopic sinus excision, a friable light tan and hemorrhagic lesion was seen occupying the right maxillary sinus with underlying bone destruction. Intraoperative pathology evaluation revealed no malignancy.

Results: Histologic examination revealed a biphasic …

A Retrospective Study On The Effect Of Raas Pathway Inhibitors At Decreasing The Risk Of Acute Coronary Syndrome In Hypertensive Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis As Compared To Other Antihypertensives, Yousuf Sherwani, Asad Risvi, Senthil Thambidorai Jan 2024

A Retrospective Study On The Effect Of Raas Pathway Inhibitors At Decreasing The Risk Of Acute Coronary Syndrome In Hypertensive Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis As Compared To Other Antihypertensives, Yousuf Sherwani, Asad Risvi, Senthil Thambidorai

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic multi-system inflammatory disease of which is characterized by articular and extra-articular involvement. Patients with RA have a higher risk of mortality when compared with the general population, which is due predominantly to increased cardiovascular disease. Due to the higher incidence of CVD and MI in RA patients it has been postulated that enhanced systemic inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of CVD in RA patients. Previous studies have shown that ant inflammatory medication such as systemic steroids and immune blockers have been shown to decrease the risk of MI in patients with …

Healthcare Disparities Among Hypermobile Spectrum Disorder And Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Patients, Brooke A. Martinez Jan 2024

Healthcare Disparities Among Hypermobile Spectrum Disorder And Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Patients, Brooke A. Martinez

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) is the most common subtype of rare connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). Hypermobile Spectrum Disorder (HSD) is a connective tissue disorder that presents itself similarly to hEDS. Both disorders primarily affect individuals assigned to females at birth (AFAB), and symptoms range from joint instability, musculoskeletal pain, dizziness, fatigue, depression, and anxiety. Due to many factors like lack of education or attitudes among medical professionals (MPs), receiving a diagnosis of either of these conditions can be a challenging and grueling journey for patients. An online survey was conducted and distributed over social media platforms to …

Factors Leading To Osteoporosis In Turner Syndrome, Daniella O. Aleshinloye Jan 2024

Factors Leading To Osteoporosis In Turner Syndrome, Daniella O. Aleshinloye

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Turner Syndrome (TS) is a chromosomal disorder from conception characterized by the partial or complete absence of the second X chromosome in females. Chromosomal abnormalities, both numerical and structural, contribute to a significantly higher prevalence of fractures (30.5-32.2%) compared to non-TS postmenopausal women (14.9%). This highlights the intrinsic bone abnormalities associated with TS and increased fracture risk. Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) is commonly used to assess bone mineral density (BMD). However, its accuracy in individuals with TS is limited due to the partial volume effect, highlighting the need for further clinical research to understand bone density changes compared to …
