Background The reduction of diabetes complications depends on adherence to self-management behaviors. The current study was designed to examine the influence of multiple social-environmental levels of support on diabetic self-management behaviors in a lower income community. The eight distinct levels of social-environmental support studied were personal characteristics, physician and health team, family and friends, neighborhood, community, media and policy, community organizations, and the workplace. Methods An anonymous self-administered survey, consisting of questions about demographic features, hemoglobin AlC, self-management behaviors, and perceived support from multiple social-environmental levels, was completed by 36 diabetic participants from the Regions Family Physicians clinic. Obesity is a dangerous health condition affecting approximately 30% of all Americans and can be attributed to 300,000 deaths a year. Obesity has been found to disproportionately affect Blacks, Latinos, and those with lower SES. Although obesity is a problem for all age groups, its prevalence is highest among those 60-74 years of age. Studies have shown that there is an association between obesity and chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, arthritis, cancers, and type-2 diabetes. Research objectives. One source of falls in the elderly may be an inability to sufficiently adjust to transient postural perturbations or slips. Identifying useful predictors of fall potential, as well as factors that affect the ability of an individual to detect a movement of the standing support surface may provide insight into postural stability and methods to increase stability in elders. To do this, acceleration thresholds to short, precise, lateral platform translations and the resultant psychophysical responses of adults with early Type 2 diabetes to age-matched controls and young adults were measured.

The Relationship Between Perceived Self-Efficacy, Regimen Adherence, And Glycemic Control In Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: A Pilot Study, Antonieta Pelias Alteza

This pilot study examined the relationship between perceived self-efficacy and regimen adherence on glycemic control among adolescents, aged 11 to 18 years, with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. Thirty-six adolescent-parent dyads participated in this study. Bivariate analysis using Pearson product moment-correlations identified no significant relationships among the variables. Regarding treatment regimen, adolescents on insulin pumps had a mean glycosylated hemoglobin level of 8.09% whereas adolescents on daily insulin injections had a mean glycosylated hemoglobin level of 9.26%. This study described three days of dietary intake, physical activity, and glycemic control in 14 female and eight male adult diabetics using Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII). Changes in weight after initiation of CSII were also described.

Dietary intakes were analyzed using the NUTREDFO computer program then compared to established standards. Both sexes had mean intakes of zinc, folate, vitamin B₆, and magnesium below the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA, 1980) for age and sex. The literature regarding angiographic patterns of arteriosclerosis obliterans (ASO) in the legs of diabetics and nondiabetics is reviewed. The medical records of 28 adult-onset diabetics and 35 nondiabetics with chronic ASO of the lower extremities who underwent angiography for the first time were analyzed for age, presenting symptoms, smoking history, history of hypertension and therapeutic fate of the affected limbs. The arteriograms were analyzed for basic disease patterns and degree of disease at specific segments of the arterial tree, based on the radiologist's findings. The two pathologic states studied were chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes mellitus, chosen for their high prevalence in the population. This study was conducted to determine whether a functional relationship exists between human tissue and environmental levels of chromium and/or zinc and in individuals with maturity onset diabetes.

Three counties of Utah were selected as sites:
