The Blue Zones project was brought to Monterey County due to the high prevalence of type 2 diabetes. Nearly fifty percent of Monterey county are pre-diabetic or diabetic. The Blue Zones Project of Monterey County is a well being improvement initiative that works with local schools, worksites, restaurants and organizations to educate and promote healthier habits. The food sector of the project consists of individuals who work with restaurants and grocery stores here in Monterey County. The diabetes program strives to provide diabetes self-management education to the in-patient with diabetes. The specific aim is to improve and standardize diabetes education for the inpatient with diabetes by June 2015. The microsystem is a medical surgical unit for patients 18 years and older who present with diabetes as either a primary diagnosis or secondary diagnosis. Fifty percent of the diabetes patients on this unit are ages 65-89 years old, twenty nine percent are ages 50-64. The unit has 32 beds and is filled to capacity ninety five percent of the time. Previous literature suggests a positive relationship between general child routines and diabetes treatment adherence. However, research examining routines specific to the diabetes regimen is lacking. Recently, the Pediatric Diabetes Routines Questionnaire (PDRQ) was developed as a parent-report measure of diabetes-specific routines for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Though the PDRQ has provided a means to measure routines specific to the diabetes regimen, limitations exist in regard to its use with adolescents.
