Abstract
Background: The functioning of neonatal delivery teams can be affected by technical and non-technical skills of individual team members. The team in this project was challenged by varying knowledge and skill levels and did not have a standardized process for debriefing resuscitation events. The literature shows that debriefings can aid in improving knowledge, skills, teamwork, and communication of resuscitation teams.
Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement a scripted, post-resuscitation debriefing with the neonatal delivery team to improve non-technical skills of the resuscitation team and identify challenges to providing optimal care.

Quality Improvement: Piloting A Pediatric Obesity Prevention Screening Tool And Intervention In A Family Practice Setting., Erin Shaye Semeyn
Quality Improvement: Piloting A Pediatric Obesity Prevention Screening Tool And Intervention In A Family Practice Setting., Erin Shaye Semeyn
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: In the United States today, nearly one third of children fall into the category of overweight or obese. Because it is extremely difficult to treat childhood obesity once it occurs, prevention is the optimal approach to childhood overweight and obesity (Brown & Perrin, 2018; Cooper & Mandel, 2020). An ideal time to address obesity prevention health behaviors is during pediatric primary care visits. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began in the United States in 2019, visits to primary care offices, including visits to an urban university-based family practice clinic in Kentucky, dropped as some pediatric patients and their caregivers worried …

Sclerosing Mesenteritis: A Rare Cause Of Abdominal Pain, Said Sharawi, Vincent A. Graffeo, Lynne J. Goebel
Internal Medicine
Sclerosing mesenteritis (SM) is a rare inflammatory fibrotic disease of the small intestine mesenteric fat often discovered incidentally on a CT scan. Clinical manifestations depend on the mass effect on the viscera and vessels. The most common symptoms are abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea. SM occurs predominantly in Caucasian men, during the fifth to seventh decades of life. We present a 69-year-old woman with SM whose symptoms were thought to be from irritable bowel syndrome. A 69-year-old female with a history of fibromyalgia presented with recurrent bouts of abdominal pain across her mid-abdomen lasting 30 minutes to an hour associated …

A Policy Project: Implementing Safe Firearm Storage Legislation In Kentucky., Maggie M. Wiser
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Ensuring the safe storage of firearms in the home is a research-supported method of reducing the incidence of firearm injury and death, specifically unintentional injury and self-harm in the pediatric population. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping all firearms stored locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition. While evidence shows that implementing laws regulating the storage of firearms can be effective to reduce morbidity and mortality, the state of Kentucky currently has no such regulations. For this DNP project, John Kingdon’s Multiple Streams Framework was used as a guideline for policy analysis with the intention of identifying opportunities to advocate …
Development Of A Project To Improve Prenatal Education At A Rural Medically Assisted Treatment Center Focused On Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome And Parenting Skills., Tracey Brink

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 makes it illegal to discriminate against a person because of their race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The law also protects individuals from retaliation if they complain about discrimination, participate in an employment discrimination proceeding, or reasonably oppose discrimination. Although Title VII makes discrimination illegal, it is still present in the workplace. The objective of this thesis is to discuss employee discrimination based on race and sex. Specifically, I will analyze the current workplace discrimination against African American men and women as well as the psychological, physiological, and emotional effects …

Phenotype-Driven Approaches To Enhance Variant Prioritization And Diagnosis Of Rare Disease., Julius O B Jacobsen, Catherine Kelly, Valentina Cipriani, Genomics England Research Consortium, Christopher J Mungall, Justin Reese, Daniel Danis, Peter N Robinson, Damian Smedley
Faculty Research 2022
Rare disease diagnostics and disease gene discovery have been revolutionized by whole-exome and genome sequencing but identifying the causative variant(s) from the millions in each individual remains challenging. The use of deep phenotyping of patients and reference genotype-phenotype knowledge, alongside variant data such as allele frequency, segregation, and predicted pathogenicity, has proved an effective strategy to tackle this issue. Here we review the numerous tools that have been developed to automate this approach and demonstrate the power of such an approach on several thousand diagnosed cases from the 100,000 Genomes Project. Finally, we discuss the challenges that need to be …

Effects Of Nnos Inhibitors On Melanoma-Induced Immunosuppression, Kate Alison Lozada
Effects Of Nnos Inhibitors On Melanoma-Induced Immunosuppression, Kate Alison Lozada
Pharmaceutical Sciences (MS) Theses
The incidence of cutaneous melanoma (CM) rises despite advances in immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Studies have shown that interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), a pro-tumorigenic cytokine in CM, induces the expression of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), leading to the escape of melanoma cells from immunosurveillance. Our previous study suggests that neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS)-mediated nitric oxide (NO) signaling is crucial for melanoma progression and forms a mechanistic rationale behind nNOS inhibition as a novel treatment strategy for CM. An additional study demonstrated that IFN-γ interacts with nNOS signaling in melanoma and novel nNOS inhibitors (nNOSi) effectively diminished the induction of PD-L1 post …

The U.S. psychology workforce is considerably less diverse than the population that it serves. While several recruitment and admission practices are effective for diversifying psychology training programs, upstream recruitment of underrepresented candidates is particularly promising. Aiming to diversify the clinical psychology graduate program applicant pool, the Student Training Equity Project (STEP) was developed to promote and evaluate upstream recruitment of undergraduate students of color interested in psychology graduate studies. This study used a mixed-method design to evaluate immediate outcomes for three STEP programmatic strategies. Survey results suggest that STEP networking events were associated with undergraduate research and mentorship opportunities. Findings …

Methods: A post hoc subgroup analysis of the multicenter, retrospective CWIS-TBI study was performed in patients with TBI and stratified by having sustained a non-flail fracture pattern or flail chest between January 1, 2012 and July 31, 2019. The primary outcome was mechanical ventilation-free days and secondary outcomes …
Environmental Communication: Changing The Attitude-Behavioral Gap In Science Communication Utilizing Strategic Messaging, Carrie Helgeson Nelms
Environmental Communication: Changing The Attitude-Behavioral Gap In Science Communication Utilizing Strategic Messaging, Carrie Helgeson Nelms
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
National Polls in the United States consistently find the public’s beliefs and attitudes about climate change and other environmental issues significantly diverge from those held by the science community. A communication gap between the findings on the causes and effects of environmental issues and the public’s inability to interpret or refuse to accept these findings are possible causes of this divergence. This communication gap constitutes a threat to society because of inaction to environmental problems and points to needed changes in scientific messaging that better informs and motivates behavioral change. The present research employed a strategic message design to affect …

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Shortages of new therapeutics to treat coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have forced clinicians, public health officials, and health systems to grapple with difficult questions about how to fairly allocate potentially life-saving treatments when there are not enough for all patients in need. Shortages have occurred with remdesivir, tocilizumab, monoclonal antibodies, and the oralantiviral Paxlovid.
Ensuring equitable allocation is especially important in light of the disproportionate burden experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic by disadvantaged groups, including Black, Hispanic/Latino and Indigenous communities, individuals with certain disabilities, and low-income persons. However, many health systems have resorted to first-come, first-served approaches to allocation, which tend …
