Reducing Weekly Screen Time Use In College Students., Anna Louise Davidson

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

Background: Screen time overuse is a serious problem currently affecting college students. Studies have shown that too much screen time use can contribute to symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as stress, insomnia, and sedentary behavior contributing to obesity and cardiometabolic issues. Though much research has been devoted to assessing and reducing screen time use in children and adolescents, there are fewer published studies on interventions specific to college students. Therefore, the interventions for adolescents (ages 13 to 17) were reviewed and synthesized, as college students are close in age and brain development to late adolescent stage.

Setting: The …

Improving Trauma-Informed Education And Parenting For Resource Parents At A Foster Care Agency., Courtney Albers

Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers

675,000 children nationwide were involved with the foster care system in 2019, and nearly all children within the foster care system are actively suffering from the effects of trauma. Resource parent trauma-informed trainings, such as Resource Parenting Curriculum (RPC) developed by The National Child Traumatic Stress Network, are associated with improved parental perceptions towards trauma-informed care, improved child outcomes, and placement stability. Foster care agencies have trauma-informed state-based curriculum, but it does not meet the needs of resource parents, specifically those caring for children with developmental delays or disorders. The project was implemented at a therapeutic foster care agency for …

According to the 2021 report from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, 82.4 million people were forcibly displaced because of violence, wars, or persecution and over 26.4 million are currently living with refugee status. Displacement and resettlement trauma are associated with chronic disease onset and poor cognitive, physical, and mental health outcomes for refugee populations. To mitigate some of the deleterious effects of resettlement trauma, we propose a community-based rehabilitation program (CBRP) framework that is culturally sensitive, trauma-informed and focused on the vulnerabilities of women. The purpose of this novel CBRP framework is to address health inequities among a …

The Polymer Coated Polymeric (PCP) microneedles were fabricated using PVP K30 in the core and ethyl cellulose in the coating. The PCP microneedles do not disintegrate in the tissue upon insertion and rather stays intact and allows diffusion of drugs and analytes across the membrane both inward and outward. In this project the potential use of PCP microneedles for sampling analytes from the dermal tissue was explored. The amount of analyte sampled depended on the concentration in the tissue, physicochemical properties of the analyte and duration of insertion of the array in the tissue. Further, an advanced type of PCP …

Ethical Considerations Of Telehealth: Access, Inequity, Trust, And Overuse, Monica O'Reilly-Jacob, Andrea Vicini, Ashley P. Duggan Aug 2022

Ethical Considerations Of Telehealth: Access, Inequity, Trust, And Overuse, Monica O'Reilly-Jacob, Andrea Vicini, Ashley P. Duggan

Journal of Health Ethics

In the U.S. healthcare system, telehealth is increasingly present and demands ethical assessment. On the one hand, telehealth increases access to healthcare services for some at-risk populations (e.g., people suffering from mental illness and addictions) and in specific contexts (e.g., rural). On the other hand, telehealth widens the digital divide and can lead to overuse of services. Furthermore, because it is still unclear how telehealth influences trust between patients and primary care clinicians, connecting relationship science and human communication research can inform critical reasoning. Finally, healthcare policy is advancing toward the wide adoption of telehealth. Hence, it is urgent to …

Financial Incentives And Healthcare: A Critique Of Michael Sandel, Mark Peacock Aug 2022

Financial Incentives And Healthcare: A Critique Of Michael Sandel, Mark Peacock

Journal of Health Ethics

The use of financial incentives in healthcare calls for ethical examination. Michael Sandel's influential work represents such examination and is subject to critical analysis in this paper. Sandel focuses on monetary payments to persuade patients to lose weight, give up smoking etc. but also on the much-discussed case of giving drug addicts money in return for their consent to be sterilized. He offers two separate objections to financial incentives, one based on coercion, the other on corruption. I argue that Sandel's corruption objection to commodification is insufficient to ground the objection he has to financial incentives in healthcare. Whatever strength …

Dual Mechanisms Implemented By Lin-28 For Positive Regulation Of Hbl-1 Are Necessary For Proper Development Of Distinct Tissues In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Madeleine Minutillo

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations

In Caenorhabditis elegans, the heterochronic pathway is comprised of a hierarchy of genes that control the proper timing of developmental events. hbl-1 (Hunchback Like-1) encodes an Ikaros family zinc-finger transcription factor that promotes the L2 stage cell fate events of the hypodermis. The downregulation ofhbl-1 is a crucial step for the transition from the L2 to the L3 stage. There are two known processes through which negative regulation of hbl-1 occurs: suppression of hbl-1 expression by 3 let-7 miRNAs through the hbl-1 3’UTR and inhibition of HBL-1 activity by LIN-46. The mechanisms by which hbl-1 is positively regulated have not …

Reciprocity And Priority Allocation System For Organ Transplant: An Ethical Analysis, Gordon Wong, Chong Ho Yu Aug 2022

Reciprocity And Priority Allocation System For Organ Transplant: An Ethical Analysis, Gordon Wong, Chong Ho Yu

Journal of Health Ethics

How to increase the supply of organs donations for transplant is a critical issue in healthcare. Although recently xenotransplantation has received much publicity, it may be years before this becomes clinically viable. The Reciprocity and Priority Allocation (RPA) System currently used in Israel and a few other countries may be a reasonable approach to increase organ donation in the foreseeable future. For this approach to be accepted by the public, a robust analysis on its ethical implications is needed. This paper applies two formal ethics frameworks to analyze the implication of the RPA system.
