Management Of Impacted Maxillary Central Incisors, Wen-Ching Tsai, Lin-Chan Lao
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Although the incidence of impaction of the upper central incisor is not so frequent, with about 0.06% to 0.2% incidence rate, the occlusal relationship and symmetric esthetics of upper anterior dentition are obviously affected. The patient’s psychology may also be altered while situation getting worse. Thus, the differential diagnosis and treatment modalities for impaction of upper central incisor should be emphasized. For the guidance of clinical treatment, the following text would focus on factors about impaction of upper central incisor including the etiology, diagnostic method, treatment principles, and also the post-treatment rehabilitation and retention.

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Radiographic examination plays an important role in diagnosis and treatment of impacted tooth. However, conventional plain radiographic image is insufficient to provide enough information about impacted teeth in the case with multiple impacted teeth. Recently, cone-beam computed tomography and 3-D image are advanced and more details about impacted teeth and neighboring structure could be delineated from 3-D image. The detailed information will greatly improve the accuracy of diagnosis and implantation of an appropriate orthodontic treatment. This case report here presents a child with 3 impacted teeth in right anterior maxilla. With the aid of 3-D cone-beam CT image, 2 impacted …

Early Orthodontic Treatment For An Anterior Cross-Bite Malocclusion With Modified Hawley Appliance And 2×4 Fixed Appliance - A Case Report, Shang-Hung Tsai, Tzu-Hsin Lee
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
The etiology of anterior cross-bite is multi-factor and the advocated treatment options were abundant. Early orthodontic treatments including chin-cap, face mask and palatal expansion have been recommended by many scholars. But some other clinicians would delay the orthodontic treatment combined with orthognathic surgery for Class III cases till the completion of growth, if there were no obvious detriment to patients’ oral function or psychological impact to their social life. However, for cases of non-skeletal anterior cross-bite (Pseudo-Class III) malocclusion, early orthodontic correction would be beneficial to normal maxillary forward growth and may prevent occlusal trauma of anterior teeth. This case …

A Review Of The Relationship Between Facial Morphology In Vertical Dimension And The Masticatory Musculature, Yu-Ting Chiu, Wen-Ching Ko
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
The orthodontic treatment philosophy and strategy toward patients with different vertical facial pattern such as open bite or deep bite, long face or short face, are usually different. The relationship between facial morphology in vertical dimension and masticatory musculature are always interested by orthodontists. However, the cause and effect relationship between muscle function and facial morphology is still inconclusive. To get a better understanding of previous works, this article mainly reviews the relationship between function and form into three aspects: bite force, cross-sectional area of muscle, orientation and mechanical advantage of muscle.

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
Tipped molar is a relatively common occurrence in adult dentition. The objective in orthodontic molar uprighting is ideal positioning of the molar which will eventually become an abutment tooth for a fixed prothesis. The ideal position will improve the periodontal environment for the molar. The benefits provided by molar uprignting are: abutment preparations are simplified; pontic design is improved; reduced mesial periodontal infra-bony defect and so on. In present review article, several appliances and techniques are described for uprighting molars.

The determinants of severe COVID-19 in healthy adults are poorly understood, which limits the opportunity for early intervention. We present a multiomic analysis using machine learning to characterize the genomic basis of COVID-19 severity. We use single-cell multiome profiling of human lungs to link genetic signals to cell-type-specific functions. We discover >1,000 risk genes across 19 cell types, which account for 77% of the SNP-based heritability for severe disease. Genetic risk is particularly focused within natural killer (NK) cells and T¬†cells, placing the dysfunction of these cells upstream of severe disease. Mendelian randomization and single-cell profiling of human NK cells …

Congenital iodide transport defect is an uncommon autosomal recessive disorder caused by loss-of-function variants in the sodium iodide symporter (NIS)-coding SLC5A5 gene and leading to dyshormonogenic congenital hypothyroidism. Here, we conducted a targeted next-generation sequencing assessment of congenital hypothyroidism-causative genes in a cohort of nine unrelated pediatric patients suspected of having a congenital iodide transport defect based on the absence of 99mTc-pertechnetate accumulation in a eutopic thyroid gland. Although, unexpectedly, we could not detect pathogenic SLC5A5 gene variants, we identified two novel compound heterozygous TG gene variants (p.Q29* and c.177-2A>C), three novel heterozygous TG gene variants (p.F1542Vfs*20, p.Y2563C, and …

River landings are common public grounds, visited by many people every day. The aftermath of visiting these places may be unsettling since much trash is left behind and scattered throughout. The litter collects and with each rain or high wind, it has a better chance of ending up in our streams, rivers, creeks, and eventually our oceans. The main purpose of this study was to measure both air and water quality throughout the Ogeechee River basin in South Georgia to determine how each was impacted by trash. Ammonia, methane, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) along with temperature and humidity were …

The LC3/GABARAP family of proteins is involved in nearly every stage of autophagy. Inhibition of LC3/GABARAP proteins is a promising approach to blocking autophagy, which sensitizes advanced cancers to DNA-damaging chemotherapy. Here, we report the structure-based design of stapled peptides that inhibit GABARAP with nanomolar affinities. Small changes in staple structure produced stapled peptides with very different binding modes and functional differences in LC3/GABARAP paralog selectivity, ranging from highly GABARAP-specific to broad inhibition of both subfamilies. The stapled peptides exhibited considerable cytosolic penetration and resistance to biological degradation. They also reduced autophagic flux in cultured ovarian cancer cells and sensitized …

Increasing human-wildlife conflicts worldwide are driving the need for multiple solutions to reducing “problem” wildlife and their impacts. Fertility control is advocated as a non-lethal tool to manage free-living wildlife and in particular to control iconic species. Injectable immunocontraceptives, such as GonaCon, stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies against the gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which in turn affects the release of reproductive hormones in mammals. Feral cattle (Bos indicus or Bos taurus) in Hong Kong are an iconic species whose numbers and impacts on human activities have increased over the last decade. Previous studies have proven that a …

Cellular behaviors emerge from layers of molecular interactions: proteins interact to form complexes, pathways, and phenotypes. We show that hierarchical networks of protein interactions can be defined from the statistical pattern of proteome variation measured across thousands of diverse bacteria and that these networks reflect the emergence of complex bacterial phenotypes. Our results are validated through gene-set enrichment analysis and comparison to existing experimentally derived databases. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is associated with a hyperinflammatory state and lymphocytopenia, a hallmark that appears as both signature and prognosis of disease severity outcome. Although cytokine storm and a sustained inflammatory state are commonly associated with immune cell depletion, it is still unclear whether direct SARS-CoV-2 infection of immune cells could also play a role in this scenario by harboring viral replication. We found that monocytes, as well as both B and T lymphocytes, were susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection in vitro, accumulating double-stranded RNA consistent with viral RNA replication and ultimately leading to expressive …
