Cardiovascular disorder (CVD) is a common comorbidity in people living with HIV (PLWH). Although the underlying mechanisms are unknown, virotoxic HIV proteins, such as the trans-activator of transcription (Tat), likely contribute to CVD pathogenesis. Tat expression in mouse myocardium has been found to induce cardiac dysfunction and increase markers of endothelial toxicity. However, the role that Tat may play in the development of CVD pathogenesis is unclear. The capacity for Tat to impact cardiac function was assessed using AC16 human cardiomyocyte cells and adult male and female transgenic mice that conditionally expressed Tat [Tat(+)], or did not [Tat(−)]. In AC16 …

Spinacia oleracea L., Amaranthaceae, leaves cultivated in Egypt demonstrated a potential antileukemic activity against the chronic myeloid leukemia, K562 cell line. Thus, the aim of this study is to carry out a phytochemical investigation of S. oleracea leaves as well as the isolation of its antileukemic phytoconstituents. Phytochemical investigation of S. oleracea leaves resulted in the isolation of seventeen known compounds. The biological study revealed that compounds hexaprenol, phytol, and 18-[(1-oxohexadecyl) oxy]-9-octadecenoic acid exhibited a remarkable antiproliferative activity against K562 cells in vitro. A mechanistic in silico study showed that hexaprenol, phytol, and 18-[(1-oxohexadecyl) oxy]-9-octadecenoic acid exhibited a strong binding …

Genetic Quality: A Complex Issue For Experimental Study Reproducibility., Atsushi Yoshiki, Gregory Ballard, Ana V Perez
Faculty Research 2022
Laboratory animal research involving mice, requires consideration of many factors to be controlled. Genetic quality is one factor that is often overlooked but is essential for the generation of reproducible experimental results. Whether experimental research involves inbred mice, spontaneous mutant, or genetically modified strains, exercising genetic quality through careful breeding, good recordkeeping, and prudent quality control steps such as validation of the presence of mutations and verification of the genetic background, will help ensure that experimental results are accurate and that reference controls are representative for the particular experiment. In this review paper, we will discuss various techniques used for …

Faculty Research 2022
In 2021, the National Institutes of Health Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) announced recommendations to improve the reproducibility of biomedical research using animals. In response, The Jackson Laboratory faculty and institutional leaders identified key strategies to further address this important issue. Taking inspiration from the evolution of clinical trials over recent decades in response to similar challenges, we identified opportunities for improvement, including establishment of common standards, use of genetically diverse populations, requirement for robust study design with appropriate statistical methods, and improvement in public databases to facilitate meta-analyses. In this Perspective, we share our response to ACD recommendations, …

Faculty Research 2022
Histones have a long history of research in a wide range of species, leaving a legacy of complex nomenclature in the literature. Community-led discussions at the EMBO Workshop on Histone Variants in 2011 resulted in agreement amongst experts on a revised systematic protein nomenclature for histones, which is based on a combination of phylogenetic classification and historical symbol usage. Human and mouse histone gene symbols previously followed a genome-centric system that was not applicable across all vertebrate species and did not reflect the systematic histone protein nomenclature. This prompted a collaboration between histone experts, the Human Genome Organization (HUGO) Gene …

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications
Background: Although there is scientific literature supporting an association between depression and preeclampsia (PE), little is known about the underlying mechanistic pathways that may explain these observed associations. Thus, this study aimed to outline the relationship between depression and PE, and to highlight the underlying cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors that are common to both. Methods: A scoping review of the literature was conducted in Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science. Results: From 706 articles initially identified, 23 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Although some studies reported a positive association between PE and postpartum …

Research regarding the incidence of cancer among people with psychotic disorders relative to the general population is equivocal, although the evidence suggests that they have more advanced stage cancer at diagnosis. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the incidence and stage at diagnosis of cancer among people with, relative to those without, psychotic disorders. We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases. Articles were included if they reported the incidence and/or stage at diagnosis of cancer in people with psychotic disorders. Random effects meta-analyses were used to determine risk of cancer and odds of advanced stage …
Examining Bourdieu’S Concepts Of Capital, Habitus, And Field In Women’S Health Research In Nigeria: A Feminist Perspective, Mary Ndu
Health Studies Publications
Global health’s persistent focus on women’s health-seeking behaviour necessitates a philosophical understanding of the meaning behind women’s health decision-making. In studying health-seeking behaviour, researchers use philosophical paradigms to explicate and understand complex social concepts that continue to maintain health inequities and injustices. A commonly used theory is Bourdieu’s Theory of Practice. This paper examines the scholastic application of Bourdieu’s theory of practice to theorize women’s health-seeking behaviour in qualitative research to understand the rationale behind using health services. The theory of practice consists of four concepts: practice, habitus, field, and capital. Each concept conceptualizes the theory to find a logical …

Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation For Volume Control And Pressure Control Ventilator Modes, Brian Bailey, Anthony Newsom
Doctoral Projects
The purpose of this doctoral project was to create a tool to teach student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) in The University of Sothern Mississippi’s (USM’s) anesthesia program about pressure control and volume control ventilator modes, and how to use them. To accomplish this goal an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) was developed. The framework used for creating this OSCE was Kolb's Theory. Kolb's Theory uses a four-stage learning cycle in which the learner encounters a new experience, reflects on the observations of said new experience, conceptualizes or modifies a concept based on this experience, and then applies their idea to …
Quality Improvement For Patients With Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome Starts With An Evaluation Tool, Jessica Bass
Quality Improvement For Patients With Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome Starts With An Evaluation Tool, Jessica Bass
Doctoral Projects
Patients with alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) have adverse outcomes to the traditional methods of assessing for and treating withdrawal within the intensive care unit (ICU), which includes a standardized treatment plan. Some negative outcomes include acquiring costly and dangerous hospital-acquired infections, safety concerns, and traumatic experiences that deter further treatment. More individualized assessments and treatments are needed to prevent or decrease the severity of AWS from occurring in critical care settings, which will facilitate more positive outcomes and experiences for the staff and patients. The Minnesota detoxification scale has been shown to be a more appropriate tool for the critical …
