Amniotic Fluid Embolism During Cesarean Section: An Objective Structured Clinical Exam, Mackenzie Acosta, Morgan Self
Amniotic Fluid Embolism During Cesarean Section: An Objective Structured Clinical Exam, Mackenzie Acosta, Morgan Self
Doctoral Projects
Amniotic Fluid Embolism is a rare obstetric event that has a high morbidity/mortality rate. It is imperative that the anesthesia provider be properly educated on how to recognize and treat an AFE. Prompt recognition and treatment, including the AOK regimen, increase the patient's chance of survival. The faculty for The University of Southern Mississippi’s Nurse Anesthesia Program acknowledged the need for an objective-based exam on Amniotic Fluid Embolism during the Cesarean section. The need for an educational tool on AFE prompted the creation of this doctoral project and resulted in an AFE OSCE which has been added to the OSCE …

Utilizing Telehealth Modalities For Veteran Nursing Students’ Primary Health Care Clinical Experiences During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Sarah E. Patel, Kathleen Chalaron, Judy Liesveld
School of Nursing Faculty Publications
Clinical experiences are critical for undergraduate nursing students to apply didactic learning experiences and meet the core competencies established for licensure. However, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic severely limited access to clinical experiences for undergraduate nursing students. The VA Home Telehealth program provided unique clinical experiences for veteran undergraduate nursing students, increased the use of technology, and limited the adverse effects of the pandemic in a rural, vulnerable population. This collaboration was crucial in helping students progress with their nursing education during a time of crisis.

Effective Occupational Therapy Interventions To Decrease Picky Eating In Children: A Systematic Review, Savannah L. Jacobsen, Josie Cox, Alli Bos, Cherokee Ferguson, Stacey Smallfield, Molly Whitlow
Student Systematized Reviews: Occupational Therapy
PURPOSE: Picky eating is related to the lack of consumption in food variety by children when shown different foods (Wolstenholme et al., 2020). A 2015 study reported that almost half of children experience a period of picky eating at some point during early childhood, including almost 15% of children for whom picky eating does not resolve by age 6 (Cardona et al., 2015). The purpose of this systematic review is to identify interventions within the scope of occupational therapy that increase food acceptance in children under the age of seven years who demonstrate picky eating characteristics and who have no …

Multimorbidity—the coexistence of multiple chronic conditions within an individual—is the new normal in hospital settings. Individuals with higher levels of multimorbidity require a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to meet their needs, though the complexity of their neurocognitive profiles is still poorly researched. This study reported on the neurocognitive profile of a 69-year-old, left-handed, Latino cisgender male with 10 years of education. He was deemed to have a short-term mortality in 2018, yet is still enjoying a good quality of life in 2022. This case report illustrated (a) a rather common neurocognitive profile of a patient with complex multimorbidity, (b) the …
The Ethical Perceptions Of Dog Tail Docking Amongst Owners And Veterinarians In South Carolina, Hannah Ellen Steinberg
The Ethical Perceptions Of Dog Tail Docking Amongst Owners And Veterinarians In South Carolina, Hannah Ellen Steinberg
Senior Theses
This thesis aimed to discover, in depth, what tail docking of dogs is, why it is currently in practice, what the controversial opinions surrounding it are, how the opinions differ when taking into account the professionals of the field versus owners and breeders, and how it can be addressed in the future to treat our animals as humanely as possible.
Based on the surveying of South Carolinian owners, breeders, and veterinarians, it was discovered that dog tail-docking procedures are overwhelmingly used for cosmetic or aesthetic purposes, with the aim being to match breed standards. There was a disagreement amongst those …
How To Survive College As An Acoa: The Effectiveness Of University Resources On Helping Acoas Socially And Psychologically Succeed During Their Academic Career, Kelly Buchan
Senior Theses
In 2019, 14.5 million people ages 12 and older had Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), but only 10% received treatment (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism [NIAAA], 2022). Parental drinking problems can directly affect children, or “Adult Children of Alcoholics.” Of the few studies targeting ACoAs, results show that ACoAs not only have higher risks of mental illness, but they also have lower GPAs and social health (Schroeder & Kelley, 2008). Thus, this study assessed the extent to which perceptions of the college drinking environment are related to higher depression rates in ACoAs, certain drinking motivations, and reluctance to use …

Knowledge of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening options remains suboptimal in Black populations, contributing to screening disparities. Guided by community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles, we partnered with five Black churches in Louisville, a region of Kentucky with high Black-white CRC screening disparities, to explore screening barriers and facilitators for CRC education and outreach. Project champions (n = 5) served as primary points of contact, developed project support within their churches, and were trained to recruit church and community members (n = 39) to participate in five semi-structured focus groups. Interview questions probed actual and perceived barriers to CRC screening, focusing on …

Background: Cervical lymphadenitis (LAD) and deep neck space abscesses (DNSA) are common pediatric infections caused by similar bacteria. We sought to determine differences in presentation, diagnosis, and treatment between LAD and DNSA to identify antimicrobial and diagnostic stewardship opportunities. Methods: Charts were obtained using ICD9/10 codes for retropharyngeal and parapharyngeal abscessed (DNSA), and LAD between 1/1/10-12/31/20 from two pediatric centers. 1981 charts were identified. Charts were excluded if the diagnosis was not a bacterial infection (e.g. Kawasaki disease), if the LAD was not in the neck, or if caused by less common bacteria (e.g. tuberculosis). Data on presenting signs, symptoms, …
Usability And Technology Acceptance Of An Electronic Child Abuse Screening Tool In A Pediatric Emergency Department, Angela Hayes
Usability And Technology Acceptance Of An Electronic Child Abuse Screening Tool In A Pediatric Emergency Department, Angela Hayes
Translational Projects (Open Access)
Up to half of all child physical abuse victims with major abuse injuries seen in hospitals had sentinel injuries assessed by medical providers. Universal screening for child abuse and neglect in the emergency department can potentially increase detection at lower levels of injury. However, we must consider usability for the electronic health record embedded child abuse and neglect-screening tool to be most effective. The user most likely to interact with the screening tool is the bedside nurse. The interface of the initial screening tool and the process of inputting information must be perceived as useful, usable, and satisfying to the …

Background: Cecal polyps are challenging insofar as the region represents the highest risk of bleeding and perforation during polypectomy . In addition, polypoid lesions in the cecum may represent a morphologically abnormal ileocecal valve or an inverted appendix. Inadvertent polypectomy in those scenarios would lead to serious sequelae including perforation. Case report: Our patient is a 6-year-old male with a background history of prematurity, lactose intolerance, chronic esophagitis, gastritis, constipation, and painless rectal bleeding. He presented with a acute onset diffuse, severe abdominal pain associated with diarrhea that evolved to include hematochezia. At the time of presentation, he required aggressive …

Aims and objective(s)
The objective of this systematic review was to determine the needle length required to reach the dorsogluteal muscle based on body mass index and sex. Our aim was to provide evidence-based recommendations to current intramuscular injection guidelines from the result(s) of this review.
Background
Studies worldwide are documenting reduced medication effectiveness due to improperly placed dorsogluteal intramuscular injections because of incorrect needle length, wrong site selection and/or obesity. Current intramuscular injection guidelines lack specific instructions according to weight or sex. While there are similar concerns with other injectable sites, this review focuses solely on adult dorsogluteal intramuscular …
Detailing The Effects Of Cbd On Parp And Survivin Expression In Ewing Sarcoma, Tyler Carter
Detailing The Effects Of Cbd On Parp And Survivin Expression In Ewing Sarcoma, Tyler Carter
Theses
Ewing sarcoma (ES) is an aggressive pediatric bone cancer with low five-year survival rates, particularly with recurrent disease because ES often becomes resistant to chemotherapy in these recurrences. Cannabidiol (CBD) has been identified as a potentially promising therapeutic for patients with ES. In other cancer types, CBD has demonstrated effects on two major proteins that contribute to chemotherapy resistance. The first, Poly (ADP-ribose) Polymerase I (PARP1), is a DNA damage repair enzyme that is overexpressed in recurrent ES. Though chemotherapy induces DNA damage in these cancer cells, the high levels of PARP1 facilitate repair of the DNA, allowing the mutated …

Declining Career Interest In Primary Care In Switzerland And The United States, William Zhang
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Primary care (PC) lies at the center of modern healthcare systems as the primary point of contact between the general public and quality health care. Primary care physicians (PCPs) are known to provide high quality basic care to members of their surrounding community without consuming a large budget, and thus should be a priority for health sector investments. However, the proportion of medical students becoming PCPs is declining across the world, thus putting affordable global health at risk. The U.S. and Switzerland, even with their high health expenditures and advanced healthcare technologies, are no exception to this trend. Analysis of …

Psychological challenges have been found to impact respiratory symptom perception in healthy individuals as well as in patients with various neurological disorders. Human respiratory sensory gating is an objective measure to examine respiratory sensory information processing of repetitive respiratory mechanical stimuli in the central nervous system. With this electrophysiological method, patients with higher anxiety levels showed reduced respiratory sensory gating function in the cortex, and increased symptom perception. In addition, positive emotional contexts were found to increase the respiratory sensory gating function using RREPs. However, neural substrates related to emotional impacts on respiratory sensory gating remain still unclear. In the …

Implementing A Depression Screening Process Within A Primary Care Setting Initiative To Improve Quality Patient-Centered Healthcare, Mark Beech
Doctoral Projects
Depression is more widespread than many people understand. Depression is a common mental disorder involving millions of people from all backgrounds, races, and socioeconomic levels (World Health Organization [WHO], 2020). Depression not only affects one’s mental well-being but can be often linked to one’s physical well-being. Additionally, depression is often misdiagnosed and can many times go undetected. The stigma of depression or any mental health disorder still has many patients feeling shameful and the need to be secretive which can prevent proper treatment. The implementation of a depression screening process by utilizing a tool for early depression detection is essential …
