Treatment Of Brain Metastases Using Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Mikayla Cavenas
Student Research Poster Presentations 2022
This project explains the effectiveness of stereotactic radiosurgery compared to whole-brain radiation therapy in managing cognitive function and improving the quality of life in patients diagnosed with brain metastases. Metastatic brain cancer is caused when cancer spreads to the brain from other areas of the body. The cancerous cells will break away from their original location and travel through the bloodstream or lymph system. Stereotactic radiosurgery is the administration of high-dose radiation that is delivered in a single or up to five sessions to a specific brain tumor under the guidance of real-time imaging. SRS patients allow for a similar …

Abstract:
Background: For years there has been a debate on the importance of proper running mechanics & its effect on athletic performance and injury prevention. Many argue that running is a natural motion, & athletes will instinctively adopt the most efficient running form. However, research suggests that since running is a complex full body movement, technique can affect performance and the occurrence of injury. Muscle activity imbalances & altered activation patterns are associated with potential injuries and decreased running economy, which is explored further in this review. The purpose of this systematic review is to examine the effects of core …

Background/Purpose: Neuromuscular dysfunction encompasses a wide variety of conditions that impact proper muscle functioning. One common condition resulting in neuromuscular dysfunction is a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) which can disrupt sensory, motor, visual and language systems. The resulting combination of impairments can cause limitations in activity performance and restrict participation across domains. In addition, muscle weakness is widely recognized as a major contributing factor to decline in function. Literature is showing that rehabilitation programs focusing on development of core strength with emphasis on repetition, intensity and novelty are critical for recovery of motor function. The purpose of this research was to …

Emotional Component Of Pain Perception In The Medicinal Leech?, Brian D. Burrell
Emotional Component Of Pain Perception In The Medicinal Leech?, Brian D. Burrell
Animal Sentience
Crump et al. have provided a series of criteria to assess animal sentience that is focused on the perception of pain, which is known to have both sensory and emotional components. They also provide a qualitative scoring system to assess data that address the eight criteria and apply this paradigm to decapod crustaceans. The criteria laid out have the potential to be applied to other invertebrates typically thought to have sensory response to tissue damage, but no emotional component to pain perception.
