BACKGROUND: Nance-Horan syndrome (NHS) is a rare X-linked genetic disorder characterized by ophthalmologic and dental anomalies as well as dysmorphic facies. The clinical phenotype in males includes congenital cataracts, vision loss, microcornea, nystagmus, microphthalmia, glaucoma, screwdriver blade-shaped incisors, supernumerary maxillary incisors, diastema, delays, intellectual disability, and dysmorphic facies. With the evolution of array-CGH technology, a total of five kindreds with NHS have been reported in the medical literature with microdeletions encompassing the NHS gene rather than sequencing variants.
METHODS: The patient is a 19-year-old male born to non-consanguineous parents with a past medical history of bilateral congenital cataracts, nystagmus, poor …

The current study sought to identify social, hemodynamic, and comorbid risk factors associated with 31-to 60-day heart failure (HF) rehospitalization in African American and Caucasian older (aged >65 years) women. A non-equivalent, case-control, quantitative design study using secondary data analysis of medical records from a local community hospital in the Southeast region of the United States was performed over a 3-year period. Relationships between predictor variables and the outcome variable, 31- to 60-day HF rehospitalization, were explored. The full model containing all predictors was not able to distinguish between predictors (χ[21, N = 188] = 35.77, p = 0.12). However, …

The EP2 receptor has emerged as a therapeutic target with exacerbating role in disease pathology for a variety of peripheral and central nervous system disorders. We and others have recently demonstrated beneficial effects of EP2 antagonists in preclinical models of neuroinflammation and peripheral inflammation. However, it was earlier reported that mice with global EP2 knockout (KO) display adverse phenotypes on fertility and blood pressure. Other studies indicated that EP2 activation with an agonist has a beneficial effect of healing fractured bone in animal models. These results impeded the development of EP2 antagonists, and EP2 antagonism as therapeutic strategy. To determine …

Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) is a pathogen that especially effects the respiratory system of cattle. We focused on the histopathological changes in the lungs caused by M. bovis because the lesions in the bronchi or bronchioles and alveoli are quite different in natural infections. Thirty-five lung samples from 2-to 12-month-old Japanese Black calves with respiratory symptoms were collected and examined for bacteria presence and pathological changes using immunohistochemistry (IHC). Using the loop-mediated isothermal amplification method, 18 of the 35 samples were found to be positive for M. bovis, which was isolated and identified. In 7 of the samples, only M. …

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a novel method to treat intestinal and extraintestinal diseases by transplanting the microbiota in the feces of healthy animals into the gastrointestinal tracts of patients and reconstructing intestinal flora in the patients' intestine. In this article, we reviewed the recent studies of canine FMT focusing on its indications. FMT was proved effective to treat canine Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), canine parvovirus (CPV) diarrhea and acute diarrhea; upregulate the intestinal microbiota in dogs with acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome (AHDS); and may have benefit for preventing canine post-weaning diarrhea. However, the specific FMT …

Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) and metalloprotease (MP) from Daboia siamensis (Ds) venom are believed to contribute to renal tissue toxicity. Imbalance of the cytokine system induced by snake envenomation causes tissue injury and cell damage which leads to acute toxic kidney injury. A better understanding of the pathological mechanism involved in renal injury after venom administration is needed. In the present study, we aimed to investigate inflammatory mediator genes (IL-2, IL-10, TNFα, IFN, and COX-2) in mouse kidney tissue after venom injection. Quantitative real time PCR was performed to detect the cytokine gene profiles. Beta actin was used as a house-keeping …

Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) can result in inflammation, pain, lameness and osteoarthritis. Because there is no isometric point for surgical stabilization for CCLR, the anatomical replacement of the ruptured cranial cruciate ligament with synthetic material may provide better outcomes. This retrospective study compared short-term post-operative outcomes between an intra-articular suture technique and a lateral suture technique for treating CCLR in toy breed dogs. Twenty dogs with unilateral CCLR were divided into two groups. The lateral suture technique was a lateral circumfabellar tibial suture with monofilament nylon and the intra-articular suture was performed by passing a suture through the femoral …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The mosquito-borne filarial nematode parasites Brugia pahangi and B. malayi have been proposed as potential zoonotic pathogens, with dogs and cats being the main reservoir hosts. The monasteries where both stray and semi-domesticated animals live often serve as areas where humans are exposed to these reservoirs. In Thailand, the prevalence of B. pahangi, particularly in infected monastery cats, is underreported. In this study, we investigated B. pahangi prevalence in cats at 24 temples in the Samphran district, Nakhon Pathom province, central Thailand. In total, 196 blood samples were collected from the cats and examined using the hematocrit capillary tube technique. …

Neospora caninum (N. caninum) has caused an abortion storm in dairy herds for two decades in Taiwan. There is no effective medicine for N. caninum infection for livestock, therefore, prevention by farm management is very important. The risk factors for N. caninum infection in Taiwan is still unclear. Dogs are the common definitive hosts of N. caninum on farms. This study aims to estimate the sero-prevalence and detection of N. caninum DNA in 361 pregnant dairy cows and establish an effective strategy to prevent abortion caused by N. caninum in dairy farms in Taiwan by logistic regression. The sero-prevalence of …

Complete Genome Sequence Of A Novel Recombinant Muscovy Duck Parvovirus Isolated In The Heilongjiang Province Of China, Jing Yang, Ming Li, Tianfei Yu
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Muscovy duck parvovirus (MDPV) is fatal for young ducklings of less than 3 weeks of age and has caused severe economic loss in duck production in many countries and regions. We report here on a complete genome sequence of a recombinant MDPV strain YL08 isolated from an ill Muscovy duck in 2008 at Qiqihar, Heilongjiang province, China. This genome, MDPV YL08, was 5061 nucleotides long and retained the two ORFs, which are typical in the Parvovirinae family. The genome of YL08 strain has a putative recombination breakpoint on its VP1 gene. This study has helped our understanding of the genetic …

Biomechanical Analysis Of Atlantoaxial Dorsal Fixation Using Finite Element Models, Beomju Bae, Dongwook Kim, Hyejong Oh, Gonhyung Kim
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Atlantoaxial instability can cause spinal cord compression with clinical signs ranging from cervical pain to tetraplegia and death. Although a variety of dorsal fixation techniques have been described, some of them have been related to the fracture of the dorsal arch of the atlas, leading to surgical failure. Under the hypothesis that the shape of the dorsal arch of the atlas and types of implants might affect these bone fractures, the objective of this study was to analyze bone stresses through simulations of the dorsal fixation using finite element models. Arbitrary tension forces were given to implants for simulations of …

Clinical Characteristics, Antimicrobial Resistance And Treatment Outcomes Of Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia Coli Infection In Dogs And Cats At A Veterinary Teaching Hospital In Thailand, Jeerawat Soonthornsit, Sukanya Apiratwarrasakul, Nathita Phumthanakorn
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
This retrospective study investigated the clinical characteristics of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli and its antimicrobial resistance phenotypes and analyzed the treatment outcomes of MDR E. coli infection in dogs and cats. The medical data of dogs and cats diagnosed in 2020 with E. coli infection at a veterinary teaching hospital were analyzed. Of 94 cases, the frequency of MDR E. coli (66%) infection was higher than that of non-MDR E. coli (34%). MDR E. coli was significantly more frequently detected in female dogs than non-MDR E. coli (P < 0.026). The most frequent MDR E. coli isolation sites were the urinary tract in dogs and skin wounds in cats. MDR E. coli isolates from dogs were highly resistant to ampicillin (96.1%), enrofloxacin (80.4%) and tetracycline (78.4%). Resistance to ampicillin (100%), enrofloxacin (90.9%), marbofloxacin (72.7%) and tetracycline (72.7%) occurred frequently in MDR E. coli isolates from cats. Low resistance to amikacin was detected in the MDR E. coli isolates from dogs and cats. The rates of clinical cure and non-clinical cure of the MDR E. coli and non-MDR E. coli cases were not significantly different. The duration of antimicrobial treatment for MDR E. coli was significantly longer in cats (12.6 ± 5.85 days) than in non-MDR E. coli cases (7 ± 0 days) (P < 0.048). Adjunctive therapy was prescribed more frequently in MDR E. coli (20%) than non-MDR E. coli cases (8.3%). The presence of MDR E. coli was high in this study. High resistance to commonly used antimicrobial drugs and treatment complications was observed in this study.

African swine fever (ASF) is a contagious, hemorrhagic and highly lethal viral disease in swine. Following the initial report of ASF in Kenya in 1921 it spread to East Asia through Western Europe and Russia (including Eastern Europe). Many efforts have been dedicated to controlling ASF but the struggle to eradicate this disease continues. Thus far, the efforts to develop an effective vaccine to control ASF have been unsuccessful. A previous inactivated ASF vaccine, developed by traditional methods, failed to protect pigs from ASF virus (ASFV) infection. Neutralizing antibodies were not effective in inducing protective immunity and it appears that …

Segmental colitis associated with diverticulosis (SCAD) is an inflammatory disease affecting segments of the large bowel with diverticular disease. SCAD presents several challenges in diagnoses and treatment because it often mimics a range of disorders including inflammatory bowel disease and malignancy. Here, we present the case of a 72-year-old man with lower abdominal pain and bloody stools whose initial abdominal workup showed nonspecific large bowel thickening and concerns for malignancy. Ultimately, the patient was diagnosed with mild SCAD and treated conservatively with a resolution of symptoms. He had no symptoms at the three-month and 1-year follow-ups. This case highlights the …

Newborn screening aims at detecting treatable disorders early so that the treatment can be initiated to prevent mortality and morbidity. Such programmes are well established in most developed countries, and all newborns are screened for selected metabolic, endocrine and other disorders based on disease epidemiology, testing and treatment availability, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Even in developing countries, such screening programmes are initiated using heel prick capillary blood collected on filter paper. The current narrative review was planned to provide a perspective with evidence in favour of starting newborn screening for different disorders. The programme project should be initiated nationwide, taking one …

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of using digital bitewing imaging technique for the diagnosis of dental cracks. Materials and Methods: In this study, 60 specimens of extracted human teeth were collected. Teeth were divided into two equal groups; control group and study group. Cracks were artificially created on the study group by repeated thermal cycling method using boiled water and liquid nitrogen. Then teeth were mixed in a random manner and then placed in a waxed arch block to simulate the human geometrical pattern in imaging. The roots of the teeth were embedded …

Clusters of viral pneumonia occurrences over a short period may be a harbinger of an outbreak or pandemic. Rapid and accurate detection of viral pneumonia using chest X-rays can be of significant value for large-scale screening and epidemic prevention, particularly when other more sophisticated imaging modalities are not readily accessible. However, the emergence of novel mutated viruses causes a substantial dataset shift, which can greatly limit the performance of classification-based approaches. In this paper, we formulate the task of differentiating viral pneumonia from non-viral pneumonia and healthy controls into a one-class classification-based anomaly detection problem. We therefore propose the confidence-aware …
Cultural Competence In The Care Of Muslim Women Patients, Ayah Ayesh
Cultural Competence In The Care Of Muslim Women Patients, Ayah Ayesh
Honors Projects
Delivering high-quality care to female patients of the Muslim faith requires knowledge of the differences in cultural and spiritual values. Important differences include diet, ideas of modesty, privacy, and touch restrictio. Globally, Muslims represent substantial portions of society and remain the fastest-growing religion in the world. The Muslim faith encompasses several ethnicities with diverse views regarding illness and healthcare. As a result, the care of Muslim patients provides challenges for many non-Muslim healthcare providers. The Islamic faith can influence decision-making, family dynamics, health practices, risks, and the use of healthcare. This paper describes the care of Muslim patients taking into …

Untargeted Metabolomic Identification Of Diagnostic Biomarkers In Ectopic Pregnancy, Onur Turkoglu, Robert Quinn, Stewart F. Graham, Ray Bahado-Singh
Conference Presentation Abstracts
Introduction: Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is a potentially life-threatening condition and early diagnosis still remains a challenge, causing a delay in management leading to tubal rupture. Targeted metabolomics has been shown to identify novel biomarkers for the detection of ectopic pregnancy. Using untargeted metabolomics approach, we sought to identify putative plasma biomarkers for the detection of tubal EP compared to intrauterine pregnancies. Methods: This case-control study included prospective recruitment of 50 tubal EP cases and 50 early intrauterine pregnancy controls. Plasma samples were biochemically profiled using tandem liquid chromatographymass (MS/MS) spectrometry with untargeted metabolomics approach. To avoid over-fitting, datasets were randomly …

Background: Opioid-related overdose deaths have been increasing in the United States (U.S.) in the last twenty years, creating a public health challenge. Take-home naloxone is an effective strategy for preventing opioid-related overdose death, but its widespread use is particularly challenging in smaller cities, towns, and rural areas where it may be stigmatized and/or poorly understood.
Methods: We analyzed data on knowledge and beliefs about drug use and naloxone among the general public in Nebraska, a largely rural state in the Great Plains region of the U.S., drawing on the 2020 Nebraska Annual Social Indicators Survey.
Results: Respondents reported negative beliefs …

Antibiotic stewardship is an integral practice for the dental team to ensure a safe dental visit for patients. Now, with clinical practice guidelines and state toolkits, more dentists are aware of and actively practicing antibiotic stewardship. With the application of antibiotic stewardship practices, dentists are identifying the need for additional tools to enhance practice. For example, one need that has been identified is a tool for screening patients for true penicillin allergies. The Penicillin Allergy Assessment Tool (PAAT) is a decision-making tool that can be used chairside to screen patients who report an allergy to penicillin. After screening, dentists can …
