Dentistry And The Law: Winning Your Case And Still Being Sanctioned, Dan Schulte Jd

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

This Dentistry and the Law column discusses a perplexing scenario where a dentist, despite winning a licensing case trial, faces sanctions imposed by the Disciplinary Subcommittee (DSC) of the Board of Dentistry. The article unveils the intricate process of disciplinary actions, from administrative complaints to administrative hearings, emphasizing the pivotal role of the DSC in determining sanctions. It clarifies that success in an administrative hearing doesn't guarantee a favorable outcome, as the DSC holds ultimate authority, subject to limited Court of Appeals review.

10-Minute Ebd: Digital Scans Or Conventional Impressions: Which Results In Better Crowns?, Laura Tsu Dds

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

This 10-Minute EBD column critically evaluates the outcomes of digital scans versus conventional impressions in fabricating single-unit crowns, focusing on factors such as marginal and internal fit. Employing a PICO question and a literature search pathway via PubMed, the analysis includes systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Findings suggest that crowns from digital scans generally exhibit clinically acceptable marginal and internal fit, often outperforming conventional impressions. However, heterogeneity in study samples and methodologies contributes to varied results. While digital scans meet the standard of care, ongoing research is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the evolving landscape in digital prosthodontics.

Gender Parity In Authorship Of Published Randomized Clinical Trials In Stroke Neurology From 2000 To 2021., Noor F Shaik, Ali A Saherwala, Diana L Tzeng Mar 2022

Gender Parity In Authorship Of Published Randomized Clinical Trials In Stroke Neurology From 2000 To 2021., Noor F Shaik, Ali A Saherwala, Diana L Tzeng

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Gender parity is a crucial goal in clinical medicine so that women have equal access and representation. Although approximately half (46%) of US neurology residents and fellows are female, proportions of female assistant, associate, and full professors are 49%, 41%, and 23%, respectively. This has far-reaching effects, from clinical publications to invited speakerships.Although a study noted increasing trends in female authorship in high-impact neurology journals the current literature lacks evidence on a more informative benchmark—first and last authorship in randomized clinical trials (RCTs), which is typically considered for career advancement. This study assessed annual proportions and trends of female first …

Assessment Of Neonatal Respiratory Rate Variability, Jesse Coleman, Amy Sarah Ginsburg, William Macharia, Roseline Ochieng, Dorothy Chomba, Guohai Zhou, Dustin Dunsmuir, Walter Karlen, J. Mark Ansermino

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

Accurate measurement of respiratory rate (RR) in neonates is challenging due to high neonatal RR variability (RRV). There is growing evidence that RRV measurement could inform and guide neonatal care. We sought to quantify neonatal RRV during a clinical study in which we compared multiparameter continuous physiological monitoring (MCPM) devices. Measurements of capnography-recorded exhaled carbon dioxide across 60-s epochs were collected from neonates admitted to the neonatal unit at Aga Khan University-Nairobi hospital. Breaths were manually counted from capnograms and using an automated signal detection algorithm which also calculated mean and median RR for each epoch. Outcome measures were between- …

The amygdala is vulnerable to multiple or “mixed” mis-aggregated proteins associated with neurodegenerative conditions that can manifest clinically with amnestic dementia; the amygdala region is often affected even at earliest disease stages. With the original intent of identifying novel dementiaassociated proteins, the detergent-insoluble proteome was characterized from the amygdalae of 40 participants from the University of Kentucky Alzheimer’s Disease Center autopsy cohort. These individuals encompassed a spectrum of clinical conditions (cognitively normal to severe amnestic dementia). Polypeptides from the detergent-insoluble fraction were interrogated using liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry. As anticipated, portions of peptides previously associated with neurologic diseases were …

Background

Diabetes, particularly type 1 diabetes, at younger ages can be a largely preventable cause of death with the correct health care and services. We aimed to evaluate diabetes mortality and trends at ages younger than 25 years globally using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019.

Methods

We used estimates of GBD 2019 to calculate international diabetes mortality at ages younger than 25 years in 1990 and 2019. Data sources for causes of death were obtained from vital registration systems, verbal autopsies, and other surveillance systems for 1990–2019. We estimated death rates …

Restoration of aesthetics is one the major patients’ concern in dentistry which may be disrupted due to tooth-loss secondary to trauma, or as part of orthodontic treatment or periodontal problem. A number of treatment options are available for the replacement of teeth, but they may be expensive, and time-consuming, involving artificial teeth. For immediate tooth replacement, patient’s own intentionally extracted or unintentionally avulsed tooth maybe used. The current narrative review was planned to discuss various techniques for the use of natural tooth pontic, which preserves the original contours, size and colour of the replaced tooth. Before using these teeth in …

The Resilience Of Diversified Clusters: Reconfiguring Commodity Networks In Rural China During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Zhanping Hu, Qian Forrest Zhang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We conceptualize typical rural communities in China as diversified economic clusters. In normal times, economic actors in these communities rarely cooperate with each other, but are integrated into separate commodity chains. These “diversified clusters”, however, show resilience and flexibility when an external shock—the COVID-19 pandemic—disrupts the spatial connections throughout the existing commodity chains. In this study, we use primary field data collected from one typical rural community in Northern China to show how economic diversity, aided by social networks and space-shrinking technologies, allowed for the vertical commodity chains to be reconfigured temporarily into localized horizontal commodity networks to cope with …

Indocyanine-Type Infrared-820 Encapsulated Polymeric Nanoparticle-Assisted Photothermal Therapy Of Cancer, Ramesh Marasini, Santosh Aryal

Pharmacy Faculty Publications and Presentations

Organic small-molecule photosensitizers are well-characterized and known for the light-responsive treatment modality including photodynamic therapy. Compared with ultraviolet−visible (UV−vis) light used in conventional photodynamic therapy with organic photosensitizers, near-infrared (NIR) light from 700 to 900 nm is less absorbed and scattered by biological tissue such as hemoglobin, lipids, and water, and thus, the use of NIR excitation can greatly increase the penetration depth and emission. Additionally, NIR light has lower energy than UV−vis that can be beneficial due to less activation of fluorophores present in tissues upon NIR irradiation. However, the low water stability, nonspecific distribution, and short circulation halflife …

Mental Health As A Predictor Of Bone Stress Fractures In Female Collegiate Athletes: A Literature Review, Phoebe Brown Mar 2022

Mental Health As A Predictor Of Bone Stress Fractures In Female Collegiate Athletes: A Literature Review, Phoebe Brown

University Honors Theses

Stress fractures are a common injury within collegiate athletics. Most athletes assigned female at birth will experience at least one stress fracture in their collegiate career. Eating disorders, amenorrhea, low energy availability, and low bone mass density all contribute to higher risks of stress fractures. However, one factor has been lacking within our stress fracture prevention practices in athletic departments: mental health.

Without screenings for anxiety, depression, or eating disorders, female athletes are left defenseless in a society where athletic bodies are judged and compared to each other. Underfueling in order for a body to look like another body leads …

Autologous hematopoietic stem cells transplantation (AHSCT) has been employed as treatment for severe systemic sclerosis (SSc) with high risk of organ failure. In the last 25 years overall survival and treatment-related mortality have improved, in accordance with a better patient selection and mobilization and conditioning protocols. This review analyzes the evidence from the last 5 years for AHSCT-treated SSc patients, considering in particular the outcomes related to interstitial lung disease. There are increasing data supporting the use of AHSCT in selected patients with rapidly progressive SSc. However, some unmet needs remain, such as an accurate patient selection, pre-transplantation analysis to …
