The Comparison Of Endothelial Permeability At 48 Hours Post Skeletal Muscle Injury In Male And Female Mice At Various Ages, Sabrina Tusavitz
The Comparison Of Endothelial Permeability At 48 Hours Post Skeletal Muscle Injury In Male And Female Mice At Various Ages, Sabrina Tusavitz
Health Sciences Honors Papers
We compared endothelial permeability at 48 hours post skeletal muscle injury in male and female mice at 1 month, 2 months, 3, 6 and 12 months of age. We hypothesized that the female mice would show more permeability at 48 hours post injury than the male mice at all ages. Our findings were more complicated as permeability following injury trends down with age in females, and up with age in males. These findings could be beneficial for medical professionals to tailor an injured athlete’s treatment to their age and sex since there are permeability and therefore possibly inflammation differences.

Humans are highly attuned to perceptual cues about their values. A growing body of evidence suggests that people selectively attend to moral stimuli. However, it is unknown whether morality is prioritized early in perception or much later in cognitive processing. We use a combination of behavioral methods and electroencephalography to investigate how early in perception moral words are prioritized relative to non-moral words. The behavioral data replicate previous research indicating that people are more likely to correctly identify moral than non-moral words in a modified lexical decision task. The electroencephalography data reveal that words are distinguished from non-words as early …

Gaming Intentionally: A Literature Review Of The Viability Of Role-Playing Games As Drama-Therapy-Informed Interventions, Jonathan Mendoza
Gaming Intentionally: A Literature Review Of The Viability Of Role-Playing Games As Drama-Therapy-Informed Interventions, Jonathan Mendoza
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGS) and live-action role-playing (LARP) games have recently risen in popularity in the cultural zeitgeist with the advent of popular gaming shows like Critical Roll and The Adventure Zone, as well as popular media like Community and Stranger Things. While some literature exists linking the concepts of roleplaying to theater and psychotherapy in the pursuit of deeper game design, little exists that attempts to bridge the gap by examining the potential of role-playing games (RPGs) as therapeutic tools informed by drama therapy practices and theories. This literature review provides a brief overview of basic RPG …

Misfolding, aggregation and deposition of α-synuclein (α-syn) are major pathologic characteristics of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and the related synucleinopathy, multiple system atrophy (MSA). The spread of α-syn pathology across brain regions is thought to play a key role in the onset and progression of clinical phenotypes. Thus, there is increasing interest in developing strategies that target and attenuate α-syn aggregation and spread. Recent studies of brain-penetrating polyphenolic acids, namely, 3-hydroxybenzoic acid (3-HBA), 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (3,4-diHBA), and 3-(3-hydroxyphenyl)propionic acid (3-HPPA) that are derived from gut microbiota metabolism of dietary polyphenols, show in vitro ability to effectively modulate α-syn misfolding, oligomerization, and …

Changes In Gastroenterology And Endoscopy Practices In Response To The Covid-19 Pandemic: Results From A North American Survey, Zachary L. Smith
Faculty Scholarship
Digestive manifestations appear to be common in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID19). Gastroenterologists will invariably come into contact with infected patients, and the risk of intraprocedural exposure is well established. Recommendations have been issued to guide personal protective equipment (PPE) use and the triage of procedural urgency, among other operational considerations. In response, institutions providing gastroenterology and endoscopy services have taken urgent action to protect patients and staff, but the uptake and extent of these practice changes in North America is unknown. We conducted a survey of gastroenterology and endoscopy practices to assess the response to the COVID-19 pandemic …

Cancer registries collect unstructured and structured cancer data for surveillance purposes which provide important insights regarding cancer characteristics, treatments, and outcomes. Cancer registry data typically (1) categorize each reportable cancer case or tumor at the time of diagnosis, (2) contain demographic information about the patient such as age, gender, and location at time of diagnosis, (3) include planned and completed primary treatment information, and (4) may contain survival outcomes. As structured data is being extracted from various unstructured sources, such as pathology reports, radiology reports, medical records, and stored for reporting and other needs, the associated information representing a reportable …

BACKGROUND: Primary health care (PHC), of which preventive medicine (PM) is a subspecialty, will have to cope with a deficiency of staff in the future, which makes the retention of graduates urgent. This study was conducted in Vietnam, where PM is an undergraduate degree in parallel to medical training. It aims to identify facilitating and hindering factors that impact recruitment and retention of PM graduates in the specialty. METHODS: A cross-sectional study enrolled 167 graduates who qualified as PM doctors from a Vietnamese medical school, between 2012 and 2018. Data were collected via an online questionnaire that asked participants about …
Developing The Pedis Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea Screening Tool, Steven Sumpter
Developing The Pedis Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea Screening Tool, Steven Sumpter
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common type of apnea in the pediatric population. Its prevalence is 0.7%-3.0% (Garcia et al., 2016). The dangers of OSA are multiplied in conjunction with anesthesia because anesthesia resembles a state of sleeping, relaxing the airway, and requiring more intense airway monitoring. Childhood OSA includes increased risk for developing neurocognitive impairment, behavioral problems, failure to thrive, hypertension, cardiac dysfunction, systemic inflammation, and increased healthcare costs (Kothare et al., 2015). A perioperative pediatric OSA screening tool is necessary to reduce airway risks. The PEDIS screening tool is a brief, efficient, and evidence-based tool capable …

Hereditary Cancer Syndrome Recognition And Testing: Beyond Brca, Deborah O. Himes, Hanford B. Shuman
Faculty Publications
Hereditary cancer syndromes, resulting from mutations of tumor suppressor genes, can significantly increase the risk for breast cancer. Although hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome caused by BRCA1/2mutations is well-known, less well-known hereditary cancer syndromes also exist. This article focuses on 3 other syndromes, including Li-Fraumeni, Cowden, and Peutz-Jeghers. This article will help prepare nurse practitioners to recognize key clinical features of these syndromes and understand testing criteria. Additionally, this article discusses barriers to diagnosing hereditary cancer syndromes and the role of primary care nurse practitioners in ordering genetic tests and making genetic referrals for optimal patient care.
Using A Novel Cell- Penetrating Peptide Technology To Induce Pluripotency, Laura-Maria Oja
Using A Novel Cell- Penetrating Peptide Technology To Induce Pluripotency, Laura-Maria Oja
Master of Science in Chemical Sciences Theses
Somatic stem cells have been used as a regenerative medicine tool to treat diseases like leukemia for decades, but they are limited in their ability to self-renew and differentiate. A better alternative, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), has the ability to generate cells from all three germ layers and avoid tissue rejection as well as bypass the ethical concerns related to embryonic stem cells. In 2006, Takahashi and Yamanaka discovered that only four genes were required to induce pluripotency: Oct4, Sox2, Klf4, and c-Myc (OSKM). Since then, pluripotency has been induced with OSKM most effectively by transfection or transduction. However, …

How Misinformation And Mistrust Compound The Threat Of Epidemics, William Boyd
Honors Theses
This thesis was conducted to study the effects of misinformation and medical mistrust on the public health field. I use the events of the Chapare Virus outbreak in Bolivia in the summer of 2019 and the public dialogue during that time period to discuss these themes. I used data from market survey's in La Paz, newspaper articles from Página Siete, and Tweets from the time period of the outbreak. My findings suggest that misinformation and medical mistrust affected public health measures, which has major implications for the way the public health field should address future public health events.

Despite increasing recognition of the importance of GM-CSF in autoimmune disease, it remains unclear how GM-CSF is regulated at sites of tissue inflammation. Using GM-CSF fate reporter mice, we show that synovial NK cells produce GM-CSF in autoantibody-mediated inflammatory arthritis. Synovial NK cells promote a neutrophilic inflammatory cell infiltrate, and persistent arthritis, via GM-CSF production, as deletion of NK cells, or specific ablation of GM-CSF production in NK cells, abrogated disease. Synovial NK cell production of GM-CSF is IL-18–dependent. Furthermore, we show that cytokine-inducible SH2-containing protein (CIS) is crucial in limiting GM-CSF signaling not only during inflammatory arthritis but also …

Does The Us Have The Worst Maternal Mortality Rate?, Elizabeth Adale Ellis
2020 Symposium Posters
The maternal mortality rate in America is currently very high and is increasing every year. Currently the maternal mortality rate in America is 16.9 deaths for every 100,000 births. America is ranked 138 out of 184 in the worlds maternal mortality rate scale. This is seemingly very high seeing as we are a developed first world country and we have the information to help lower this rate. In this study it will review maternal mortalities rates worldwide and compare maternal practices in other countries to Americas maternal practices. There are many documents and scholarly works on maternal mortality around the …
