The Expansion And Evaluation Of Medication Assisted Treatment Services For An Underserved Rural Northern California Community, Carolyn Perrotti May 2020

The Expansion And Evaluation Of Medication Assisted Treatment Services For An Underserved Rural Northern California Community, Carolyn Perrotti

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts

Problem: Widespread opioid misuse has led to the opioid epidemic that claims 130 deaths per day due to an opioid overdose (CDC, 2018). The opioid epidemic has plagued the United States for three decades and has been considered a public health emergency since 2017 (HHS, 2017). Rural communities are disproportionately affected by this problem and in 2014, the rate of opioid overdose deaths was 45% higher in rural communities (SAMHSA, 2018).

Context: Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is considered the most effective treatment for opioid dependence because it incorporates medication management and biopsychosocial supports (Jones et al., 2018). Retention in a MAT …

Recruiting And Retaining Np Preceptors, Angelica Renteria May 2020

Recruiting And Retaining Np Preceptors, Angelica Renteria

DNP Qualifying Manuscripts

It is estimated that by 2020, the shortage of primary care providers will reach over 20,000. This has led to a surge of nurse practitioner (NP) programs across the nation. Recruiting and retaining preceptors is of paramount importance. Barriers and incentives to precepting must be identified in order to maximize teaching capacity. More effective ways of training NP students (NPs) need to be explored to capitalize on the time preceptors invest with students. The adoption of the OMP teaching model may facilitate training for the preceptor and improve the learning of NPs due to its simplicity and efficiency.

Examining Minority Youth Swimmers’ Versus Non-Swimmers’ Perceptions Of Swimming Involvement, Timothy M. Dasinger, Laura L. Brown, Ashton J. Sawyers

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in youth, especially among minority populations (Gilchrest & Parker, 2014). According to the World Health Organization (2014), every hour of every day approximately 42 people lose their lives to drowning. Additionally, African-Americans are 14 times more likely to drown in a pool than other racial or ethnic group members (Waller & Norwood, 2011). The purpose of this study was to examine survey results between swimming and non-swimming minority youth participants. Forty African American students between the ages of 5-17 from an after-school program completed the Swimming Involvement Survey. Results indicated that …

Implemented Nurse Education To Improve The Effective Use Of The Sapphire Pca Pump: Achievement Of Quality Pain Control, Fanta Keita Zable

Master's Projects and Capstones

The Sapphire ™ Infusion System Patient-Controlled-Analgesia (PCA) pump is a device that is used to administer high pain medication to manage a patient’s pain level after an invasive procedure such as surgery. In order to achieve this goal, nurses must be able to use the sapphire equipment efficiently to prevent medication overdose and underdose, as well as to preserve safety for both the patients and the nurses themselves. In addition, nurses must be able to document accurately on EPIC. The purpose of this project, led by the team of Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) students from the University of San Francisco, …

Twice-Daily Doravirine Overcomes The Interaction Effect From Once-Weekly Rifapentine And Isoniazid In Healthy Volunteers., Edwin Lam, Joseph Schaefer, Richard Zheng, Tingting Zhan, Walter K. Kraft

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

Doravirine (DOR) is a non‐nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor indicated for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus‐1 (HIV‐1). Its use in combination with rifapentine (RPT), an anti‐tuberculosis antibiotic, may reduce the exposure of DOR compromising viral suppression in those living with HIV‐1 co‐infected with tuberculosis. We conducted a prospective, phase I, open label, two‐period, fixed sequence, drug interaction study to evaluate the effect of once‐weekly RPT and isoniazid (INH) on the pharmacokinetics of DOR in healthy volunteers. DOR 100 mg was administered alone twice‐daily for 4 days in period 1. In period 2, once‐weekly RPT+INH was co‐administered with multiple doses of …

Parental Perceptions Of Water Safety Among Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Amanda Casey Ph.D., Jennifer Blok, Katherine Vaughan, William O'Dwyer May 2020

Parental Perceptions Of Water Safety Among Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Amanda Casey Ph.D., Jennifer Blok, Katherine Vaughan, William O'Dwyer

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are twice as likely to die from unintentional drowning compared to same-age children without ASD emphasizing the importance of water-safety skills and knowledge. Yet little research has been published on perceptions of water safety for this population. The objective of the study was to investigate parental perceptions of water safety amongst children with ASD. An online questionnaire focusing on parental perceptions of water safety was distributed to parents of children with ASD associated with autism support groups across Canada. Forty-nine parents completed the self-report questionnaire with items related to demographics, swimming proficiency and lessons, …

Estimation Of The Burden Of Out-Of-Hospital Traumatic Cardiac Arrest In Karachi, Pakistan, Using A Cross-Sectional Capture-Recapture Analysis, Minaz Mawani, Syed Iqbal Azam, Muhammad Masood Kadir, Zainab Samad, Junaid Abdul Razzak May 2020

Estimation Of The Burden Of Out-Of-Hospital Traumatic Cardiac Arrest In Karachi, Pakistan, Using A Cross-Sectional Capture-Recapture Analysis, Minaz Mawani, Syed Iqbal Azam, Muhammad Masood Kadir, Zainab Samad, Junaid Abdul Razzak

Community Health Sciences

Background: The burden of trauma-related-out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in developing countries like Pakistan remains largely unexplored due to a lack of organized pre-hospital systems. In order to estimate the burden, we used a two-sample capture-recapture method which has been used in several domains to estimate difficult-to-count populations.
Methods: We obtained 3-month data from two sources: Records of two major EMS (emergency medical services) systems and five major hospitals providing coverage to the city's population. All adults with traumatic OHCA were included. Information on variables such as name, age, gender, date and time of arrest, cause of arrest, and destination hospital …
