Monitoring Patient And Caregiver Adherence To Treatment In Management Of Vascular Ulcers, Angela N. Ikeri May 2020

Monitoring Patient And Caregiver Adherence To Treatment In Management Of Vascular Ulcers, Angela N. Ikeri

Theses and Graduate Projects

Chronic diseases have increased the incidence of vascular ulcer development. These ulcers require long-term wound management and other interventions from different health care specialists to achieve healing and decrease further complications. Following acute hospital and clinic vascular ulcer care interventions, patients are discharged home or to other facilities in the communities with vascular ulcer care instructions. Often, these patients come back to the vascular clinic or get readmitted into the hospital with deterioration of their wounds. This project used questionnaires to determine what barriers vascular ulcer patients and their caregivers have in the management of these wounds in the community. …

Osteocalcin (OCN), the most abundant noncollagenous protein in the bone matrix, is reported to be a bone-derived endocrine hormone with wide-ranging effects on many aspects of physiology, including glucose metabolism and male fertility. Many of these observations were made using an OCN-deficient mouse allele (Osc– ) in which the 2 OCN-encoding genes in mice, Bglap and Bglap2, were deleted in ES cells by homologous recombination. Here we describe mice with a new Bglap and Bglap2 double-knockout (dko) allele (Bglap/2p.Pro25fs17Ter) that was generated by CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing. Mice homozygous for this new allele do not express full-length Bglap or Bglap2 mRNA …

Florida Public Health Review

Though expanding in negative impact for decades, the opioid epidemic, including heroin use, has reached public health emergency status in the United States. Heroin is not used only by the most intense drug users, but becoming more common place (Hirschfeld Davis, 2017). It is essential to better understand how young adults perceive heroin prevention, intervention, and treatment so the most effective campaign messages can be constructed to assist them. This paper presents data from four focus groups (N=24) in Orlando, Florida to better gauge young adult knowledge regarding heroin and obtain specific recommendations to successfully inform future messaging. Results suggest …

Abington Jefferson Health Papers

Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are synthetic drugs manufactured to mimic the male sex hormone testosterone [1]. They are usually prescribed for medical conditions including but not limited to impotence in males, endometriosis, hypogonadism, and aplastic anemia [2]. It has also been used historically by athletes and bodybuilders to enhance performance as it can stimulate protein synthesis leading to an increase in muscle size and strength [3]. However, the use of AAS has become a serious global public health dilemma as it has been used widely by the general population to improve physical strength and appearance [1]. In …

Racism And The Political Economy Of Covid-19: Will We Continue To Resurrect The Past?, Zinzi D. Bailey, J. Robin Moon

Publications and Research

COVID-19 is not spreading over a level playing field; structural racism is embedded within the fabric of American culture, infrastructure investments, and public policy, and fundamentally drives inequities. The same racism that has driven the systematic dismantling of the American social safety-net has also created the policy recipe for American structural vulnerability to the impacts of this and other pandemics. The Bronx provides an important case study for investigating the historical roots of structural inequities showcased by this pandemic; current lived experiences of Bronx residents are rooted in the racialized dismantling of New York City’s public infrastructure and systematic disinvestment. …

Predictors Of Nonadherence To Radiation Therapy Schedules Among Head And Neck Cancer Patients, Jennifer Lynn Miller

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nonadherence to radiation therapy schedules is a documented problem among head and neck cancer patients. This retrospective dissertation study examined whether demographics, clinical characteristics, or physical and psychological symptoms were related to nonadherence in head and neck cancer patients. The electronic medical records of 262 head and neck cancer patients at a southeastern U.S. cancer center were reviewed to determine whether nonadherence was related to symptom scores and other patient and clinical-related factors. Nonadherent patients were more likely to be female, be admitted to the cancer center as inpatients during treatment and receive outpatient IV fluids during treatment. Nonadherent patients …

Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles

BACKGROUND: Children with hearing loss, even those identified early and who use hearing aids or cochlear implants, may face challenges in developing spoken language and literacy. This can lead to academic, behavioral, and social difficulties. There are apps for healthy children to improve their spoken language and literacy and apps that focus on sign language proficiency for children with hearing loss, but these apps are limited for children with hearing loss. Therefore, we have developed an app called Hear Me Read, which uses enhanced digital stories as therapy tools for speech, language, and literacy for children with hearing loss. The …

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

Background: Naegleria Fowleri is a single-cell, thermophilic amphizoid amoeba, and a rare known causative agent for primary amoebic meningoencephalitis with >97% mortality rate. The amoeba resides in freshwater lakes and ponds but can also survive in inadequately chlorinated pools and recreational waters. The mode of infection includes activities such as diving or jumping into freshwater or submerging the head under the water. Although most commonly seen in the southern United States, it is essential to keep this clinical suspicion in mind regardless of geography, as presenting symptoms can be very similar to classic bacterial meningitis.

Conclusion: As per the CDC, …

Utilizing Evidence-Based Trauma Trainings In The Prevention Of Secondary Trauma, Aria Hudson, Marissa Mackey, Stephanie Armes

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Secondary trauma (ST) is a risk mental health clinicians face when treating trauma clients. To our knowledge, research has not explored how a clinician’s trauma training could protect against developing secondary trauma. We used data from a larger national project examining ST in a sample of Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs; N = 200). A majority of the sample (n = 149; 64.5%) reported receiving specific trauma training. We explored qualitative reports of the specific trauma trainings clinicians received; the most commonly reported were Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT; n = 36) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR; …

Equine Therapy’S Effect On Attachment For Former Foster Children, Joanna Frazier, Bryn Knapp

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Research has shown the importance of secure attachment, and the negative impact that insecure or disorganized attachment can have, especially for foster or adopted children. Attachment interventions have helped improve behavior problems and increase emotion regulation. Studies have shown that equine assisted psychotherapy (EAP) can help participants increase emotion regulation and decrease behavior problems. In this study, 50 adolescent former foster children will participate in weekly psychotherapy or EAP for one year. The primary aim of this study is to measure the effectiveness of EAP against traditional psychotherapy within this population, measuring outcomes on emotion regulation, behavior problems, and attachment.

Narrative Therapy With First-Generation College Students : Impacts On Anxiety, Depression, And Retention Rates., Nicole Ruttenberg, Lisa Christensen May 2020

Narrative Therapy With First-Generation College Students : Impacts On Anxiety, Depression, And Retention Rates., Nicole Ruttenberg, Lisa Christensen

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Over 50% of students entering higher education represent the first generation in their family to do so. These students experience unique stressors related to educational background, finances, membership in underrepresented populations, and other identities which shape their worldview. Grappling with such complexities can lead to increased likelihood of depression and anxiety, contributing to a 400% drop-out rate when compared with continuing-generation students. Narrative Therapy (NT) has shown promise in treating anxiety and depression and may be beneficial in integrating the intersectional experiences of first-generation students. Our proposed research would examine the impact of NT on depression, anxiety, and retention rates.

Does Marital Satisfaction Mediate The Relationship Between Maternal And Paternal Postpartum Depression (Ppd)?, Karen Touboul Futerman, Leah Smith May 2020

Does Marital Satisfaction Mediate The Relationship Between Maternal And Paternal Postpartum Depression (Ppd)?, Karen Touboul Futerman, Leah Smith

School of Psychology, Family, and Community Research Conference

Research suggests that the presence of maternal postpartum depression (PPD) increases the likelihood of experiencing paternal PPD. Low marital satisfaction is significantly related to paternal PPD. Using a sample of 372 heterosexual couples, data was gathered at 1 month and 9 months postpartum for both mothers and fathers to assess PPD and marital satisfaction. Using a multiple regression model, results suggest that marital satisfaction mediates the relationship between maternal and paternal PPD. We also found that the severity of paternal PPD symptoms were negatively correlated with marital satisfaction. This study highlights the importance of supporting the couple relationship as they …
