Alteration Of Iron Responsive Gene Expression In Arabidopsis Glutaredoxin S17 Loss Of Function Plants With Or Without Iron Stress, Ninghui Cheng, Han Yu, Xiaolan Rao, Sunghun Park, Erin L Connolly, Kendal D Hirschi, Paul A Nakata

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Iron (Fe) is a mineral nutrient and a metal cofactor essential for plants. Iron limitation can have detrimental effects on plant growth and development, while excess iron inside plant cells leads to oxidative damage. As a result, plants have evolved complex regulatory networks to respond to fluctuations in cellular iron concentrations. The mechanisms that regulate these responses however, are not fully understood. Heterologous expression of an Arabidopsis thaliana monothiol glutaredoxin S17 (GRXS17) suppresses the over-accumulation of iron in the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Grx3/Grx4 mutant and disruption of GRXS17 causes plant sensitivity to exogenous oxidants and iron deficiency stress. GRXS17 may act …

Associations Between Variations In Breast Anatomy And Early Breastfeeding Challenges, Alison K. Ventura, Brittany Lore, Olga Mireles Jun 2020

Associations Between Variations In Breast Anatomy And Early Breastfeeding Challenges, Alison K. Ventura, Brittany Lore, Olga Mireles

Kinesiology and Public Health

Background: Mothers with anatomic variability (e.g., shorter, wider nipples; denser areolas) may experience breastfeeding challenges disproportionately.

Research aim: To examine whether variations in breast anatomy are associated with risk for early breastfeeding challenges.

Methods: Participants included mothers < 6 weeks postpartum. Nipple base width, nipple length, and areolar density were measured on the right and left breast separately. Experiences with early breastfeeding challenges were determined through a combination of maternal report and clinical assessment.

Results: Participants (N = 119) had an average nipple diameter of 23.4 (SD = 3.0) mm for left nipples and 23.5 (SD = 3.0) mm for right nipples (range = 10–34 mm). Average nipple length was 8.5 (SD = 3.2) mm for left breasts and 9.1 (SD = 3.2) mm for right breasts (range = 5–20 mm); 35% of participants had dense areolas …

Ccdc61/Vfl3 Is A Paralog Of Sas6 And Promotes Ciliary Functions, Takashi Ochi, Huawen Lin, Susan K Dutcher, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Centrioles are cylindrical assemblies whose peripheral microtubule array displays a 9-fold rotational symmetry that is established by the scaffolding protein SAS6. Centriole symmetry can be broken by centriole-associated structures, such as the striated fibers in Chlamydomonas that are important for ciliary function. The conserved protein CCDC61/VFL3 is involved in this process, but its exact role is unclear. Here, we show that CCDC61 is a paralog of SAS6. Crystal structures of CCDC61 demonstrate that it contains two homodimerization interfaces that are similar to those found in SAS6, but result in the formation of linear filaments rather than rings. Furthermore, we show …

Extracellular Matrix Components Isolated From Diabetic Mice Alter Cardiac Fibroblast Function Through The Age/Rage Signaling Cascade, Stephanie D. Burr, James A. Stewart Jun 2020

Extracellular Matrix Components Isolated From Diabetic Mice Alter Cardiac Fibroblast Function Through The Age/Rage Signaling Cascade, Stephanie D. Burr, James A. Stewart

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2020 The Authors Individuals suffering from diabetes have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular complications such as heart failure. Heart failure can be a result of the stiffening of the left ventricle, which occurs when cardiac fibroblasts become “active” and begin to remodel the extracellular matrix (ECM). Fibroblast “activation” can be triggered by the AGE/RAGE signaling cascade. Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs) are produced and accumulate in the ECM over time in a healthy individual, but under hyperglycemic conditions, this process is accelerated. In this study, we investigated how the presence of AGEs in either non-diabetic or diabetic ECM …

Foreclosure sales permitted investors to purchase large volumes of low-cost residential properties after the last financial crisis, reshaping patterns of property ownership in low-income housing markets across the US. This study links post-foreclosure property acquisitions by investor-landlords to subsequent lead poisoning cases among children under age six living in Detroit, Michigan. We find that the odds of exhibiting elevated blood lead levels (≥ 5 μg/dL) are higher for children living in investor-owned homes purchased through tax foreclosure sale. These findings highlight the potential for property speculation in post-foreclosure housing markets to exacerbate severe and racialized burdens of excess lead toxicity …

Cerebral Palsy (CP), a common form of neurological pediatric disability, results from pre- or perinatal brain injury. Although there is growing evidence of the efficacy of motor learning-based therapies, several factors interact to produce variability in impairment and limit the effectiveness of these therapies. The variability of hand function present in children with CP indicates that a range of developmental pathways must contribute to the manifestation of individually unique characteristics of impairment. Despite two decades of progress using therapies derived from understanding the mechanisms controlling hand function, very little is known about the sensorimotor experiences occurring during development that likely …

Beta-amyloid (Ab) is thought to play a critical role in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and application of soluble oligomeric forms of Ab produces AD-like impairments in cognition and synaptic plasticity in experimental systems. We found previously that transgenic overexpression of the PP2A methylesterase, PME-1, or the PP2A methyltransferase, LCMT-1, altered the sensitivity of mice to Ab-induced impairments, suggesting that PME-1 inhibition may be an effective approach for preventing or treating these impairments. To explore this possibility, we examined the behavioral and electrophysiological effects of acutely applied synthetic Ab oligomers in male and female mice heterozygous for either a PME-1 KO or …
