The Evolution Of Nursing Leadership: Novice To Expert, Yolanda Chandler Jul 2020

The Evolution Of Nursing Leadership: Novice To Expert, Yolanda Chandler

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

The nurse leader is critical in staff development, contentment, retention, patient safety, quality of care, and achievement of organizational goals. Nurse leaders in a managerial role must lead, oversee, delegate, guide, and support staff nurses. They are expected to demonstrate clinical competence, make decisions, communicate effectively, be visible and approachable, and empower others. Some skills learned as a charge nurse can help the new manager adapt to the role, but many healthcare organizations offer a novice nurse manager a limited orientation.

Purpose: Effective nursing leadership requires nurse managers to have clinical experience, think critically, motivate others, communicate and delegate constructively, …

Hereditary Cancer Syndrome Recognition And Testing For The Primary Care Nurse Practitioner: Beyond Brca, Hanford Shuman, Deborah Himes

Student Works

Hereditary cancer syndromes, resulting from mutations of tumor-suppressor genes, can significantly increase risk for breast cancer. While Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome caused by BRCA1/2 mutations is well known, less well-known hereditary cancer syndromes also exist. This clinical practice feature focuses on three other syndromes including, Li-Fraumeni, Cowden, and Peutz-Jeghers. This article will help prepare nurse practitioners to recognize key features of these syndromes and understand testing criteria. Additionally, this article discusses barriers to diagnosing hereditary cancer syndromes and the role of primary care nurse practitioners in ordering genetic tests and making genetic referrals for optimal patient care.

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

New therapeutic strategies are needed for pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) to reduce disease recurrence and treatment-related morbidity. The Children's Oncology Group Phase III AAML1031 trial tested whether the addition of bortezomib to standard chemotherapy improves survival in pediatric patients with newly diagnosed AML. AAML1031 randomized patients younger than 30 years of age with de novo AML to standard treatment with or without bortezomib. All patients received the identical chemotherapy backbone with either four intensive chemotherapy courses or three courses followed by allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for high-risk patients. For those randomized to the intervention arm, bortezomib 1.3 mg/m2 …

Mealtime Insulin Bolus Score Increases Prior To Clinic Visits In Youth With Type 1 Diabetes., Andrew Mcconville, Amy E. Noser, Mark A. Clements, Susana R. Patton

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

INTRODUCTION: Multiple studies confirm the occurrence of 'white coat adherence' (WCA), a term describing an increase in engagement with self-care tasks just prior to a scheduled clinic appointment, across cohorts with multiple chronic conditions. In youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D), research also shows an increase in self-monitoring blood glucose frequency ahead of youths' clinic visits. While studies show preliminary evidence for the occurrence of WCA in youth with T1D, no study has examined the effect of WCA and mealtime insulin dosing behaviors in youth with T1D. The frequency of mealtime insulin bolusing score (BOLUS) is an objective measure of …

Bioethics And Covid-19: The Tension Of Quarantine And Civil Liberties, Jeffrey H. Dobken

NYMC Faculty Publications

The COVID-19 public health response is based on law and concepts developed to address an act of
bioterrorism. In the absence of a specific treatment or vaccine for an identified patient with COVID-19 this is fundamentally a statistical approach to preserve the general healthy population rather than address the needs of the individual patient.

Addressing Parameter Uncertainty In Sd Models With Fit-To-History And Monte-Carlo Sensitivity Methods, Wayne Wakeland, Jack Homer Jul 2020

Addressing Parameter Uncertainty In Sd Models With Fit-To-History And Monte-Carlo Sensitivity Methods, Wayne Wakeland, Jack Homer

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a practical guide, including a step-by-step flowchart, for establishing uncertainty intervals for key model outcomes in the face of uncertain parameters. The process starts with Powell optimization (e.g., using VensimTM) to find a set of uncertain parameters (the “optimum” parameter set or OPS) that minimize the model fitness error relative to available reference behavior data. The optimization process also helps in refinement of assumed parameter uncertainty ranges. Next, Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) or conventional Monte Carlo (MC) randomization is used to create a sample of parameter sets that fit the reference behavior data nearly as well as …

Does Marriage, Employment And Having Children Matter? A Secondary Analysis On Physical Activity Levels, Leisure Time Physical Activity, And Social Roles Among Women In The United States, Tramaine Paul Mcmullen

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Social roles, such as being married, employed, or having children, have been shown to have independent negative relationships with moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) levels among women. Increasing the number of women with children that meets physical activity guidelines is critical to reduce chronic disease and early mortality in this population. However, few studies have examined the relationship between holding multiple social roles, MVPA, and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) among women with children. The study had two aims: 1) to determine the relationship between objectively measured MVPA by social roles and 2) to examine the frequency of specific …

Experiences Of Mothers Of Preterm Neonates Following Discharge From Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Nicu) - A Qualitative Content Analysis, Monica Rita Hendricks Ms, Brian S. Carter, Suman Rao P N Dr

Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences

Preterm birth brings with it stress that requires separation from their parents, acute care, prolonged hospitalization, rigorous medical interventions with more technological contact. A preterm neonate in the neonatal intensive care unit, not only places the parents in emotional turmoil, but it also makes them experience physical, social, financial and spiritual stress. This study retrospectively explored the experiences of parents of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) graduates (neonates who are discharged from NICU) in dealing with preterm neonates and identified their coping mechanisms. Methodology: Data was collected through a telephonic interview from six mothers of preterm infants discharged from the …
