Outlaw Operators: Prevention Failures And The Resurgence Of Black Lung In Central Appalachia, Aysha Bodenhamer
Outlaw Operators: Prevention Failures And The Resurgence Of Black Lung In Central Appalachia, Aysha Bodenhamer
Carsey Publications
In this brief, author Aysha Bodenhamer describes how prevention failures in the coal mining industry have resulted in the resurgence of black lung disease. Caused by the chronic inhalation of coal and silica dust, black lung is progressive, incurable, life-altering, and fatal. Despite it being a preventable disease, black lung is resurgent among coal miners in Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia. Fieldwork including in-depth interviews with miners, clinic workers, black lung attorneys, government employees, and lay advocates, and a case-study analysis of two black lung clinics in southwest Virginia inform this analysis. These data reveal that coal operators routinely evade …

Background: Globally, children under 15 years represent approximately 12% of new tuberculosis cases, but 16% of the estimated 1.4 million deaths. This higher share of mortality highlights the urgent need to develop strategies to improve case detection in this age group and identify children without tuberculosis disease who should be considered for tuberculosis preventive treatment. One such strategy is systematic screening for tuberculosis in high-risk groups.
Objectives: To estimate the sensitivity and specificity of the presence of one or more tuberculosis symptoms, or symptom combinations; chest radiography (CXR); Xpert MTB/RIF; Xpert Ultra; and combinations of these as screening tests for …

The Roles Of Grks In Hemostasis And Thrombosis, Xi Chen, Xuefei Zhao, Matthew Cooper, Peisong Ma
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Along with cancer, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases remain by far the most common causes of death. Heart attacks and strokes are diseases in which platelets play a role, through activation on ruptured plaques and subsequent thrombus formation. Most platelet agonists activate platelets via G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), which make these receptors ideal targets for many antiplatelet drugs. However, little is known about the mechanisms that provide feedback regulation on GPCRs to limit platelet activation. Emerging evidence from our group and others strongly suggests that GPCR kinases (GRKs) are critical negative regulators during platelet activation and thrombus formation. In this review, …
Exploring Predictors Of Older Adults' Performance On A Novel Driving Simulator Task, John Philip Bernstein
Exploring Predictors Of Older Adults' Performance On A Novel Driving Simulator Task, John Philip Bernstein
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
On a per-mile driven basis, older adults are at increased risk of being involved in an automobile accident. The development and implementation of driving assessment tools is necessary to inform decisions about driving reduction and cessation. Driving simulators are one method of assessing driving performance and safety, however many simulators are cost-prohibitive for most researchers and clinicians. Additionally, while driving performance has been previously explored with respect to clinical populations (e.g., Alzheimer’s Disease), less work has evaluated this topic in a cognitively healthy sample. The present study sought to determine whether a novel, cost-effective driving simulator (Assetto Corsa (AC)) might …

High Flow Nasal Cannula In The Surgical Patient, Morta Lapkus, Paras Khandhar
Articles
No matter how much they want it, airway management and the decision to place a surgical patient on a ventilator should not just be for the PICU physicians to decide. The type of ventilation a patient receives can affect the surgical patient both positively and negatively. Could High Flow Nasal Cannula in the surgical patient be beneficial? Imagine a patient with an esophageal anastomosis that is extubated to CPAP. Now imagine the tears that would flow from the surgeon when they discover bilateral pneumothoraces and a blown-out anastomosis. Tragic. Therefore, we must weigh the risks and benefits of intubation versus …

Impact Of 12-Weeks Of Nordic Pole Walking On Arterial Stiffness In Sedentary Overweight And Obese Adults, Arbër N. Shehu
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Arterial stiffness (AS) is an independent predictor for cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality. Regular aerobic exercise is considered to improve AS. Nordic walking provides important health benefits, however, the effect of this walking method as treatment for AS remains unclear. We conducted a randomized controlled study to examine the effect of a 12-week supervised group walking intervention (controlled pace, ~3000 steps/day, 30 minutes/day, 5 times/week), with (NW) and without (SW) Nordic poles, on AS in sedentary overweight and obese adults. Fourteen individuals were randomly assigned to NW (n=7; median age 54.0 years; body mass index (BMI)=31.3 kg/m2) or …

Comprehensive orthodontic treatment usually takes 1–3 years to finish the details. The treatment duration depends on the complexity of treatment. Longer treatment times may increase the risk of root resorption, oral hygiene–related problems such as white spot lesion or dental caries, and periodontal destruction. Several methods, such as surgical-assisted procedures, drugs, and physical/mechanical stimulation methods, may accelerate tooth movement and shortened whole treatment time. This article reviews various surgical-assisted procedures and how the surgical method that can effectively shorten the treatment time. The advantages and disadvantages of various technique were also assessed.

Percutaneous Coronary Interventions In Chronic Total Occlusion - Profile, Technique And Outcome -The Malabar Experience, Desabandhu Vinayakumar, Madhusudan Pramod Raikar, Kurukkanparampil Sreedharan Mohanan
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Introduction: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of chronic total occlusion (CTO) remains a challenge. The reasons being that these procedures may be lengthy and complex, with elevated radiation exposure, increased contrast load, lower procedural success rate, and a higher risk of complication when compared with non-CTO elective PCI. Clarifying the long-term clinical outcomes of CTO-PCI is very important to justify potential investments in training and technology. However, there is a paucity of data from Indian subcontinent. Hence we decided to report the outcomes from a real-life cohort of consecutive patients undergoing elective PCI for CTO at our institution.

3d Bioprinting For Reconstituting The Cancer Microenvironment., Pallab Datta, Madhuri Dey, Zaman Ataie, Derya Unutmaz, Ibrahim T Ozbolat
Faculty Research 2020
The cancer microenvironment is known for its complexity, both in its content as well as its dynamic nature, which is difficult to study using two-dimensional (2D) cell culture models. Several advances in tissue engineering have allowed more physiologically relevant three-dimensional (3D) in vitro cancer models, such as spheroid cultures, biopolymer scaffolds, and cancer-on-a-chip devices. Although these models serve as powerful tools for dissecting the roles of various biochemical and biophysical cues in carcinoma initiation and progression, they lack the ability to control the organization of multiple cell types in a complex dynamic 3D architecture. By virtue of its ability to …

Bayesian Model Selection Reveals Biological Origins Of Zero Inflation In Single-Cell Transcriptomics., Kwangbom Choi, Yang Chen, Daniel A Skelly, Gary A Churchill
Faculty Research 2020
BACKGROUND: Single-cell RNA sequencing is a powerful tool for characterizing cellular heterogeneity in gene expression. However, high variability and a large number of zero counts present challenges for analysis and interpretation. There is substantial controversy over the origins and proper treatment of zeros and no consensus on whether zero-inflated count distributions are necessary or even useful. While some studies assume the existence of zero inflation due to technical artifacts and attempt to impute the missing information, other recent studies argue that there is no zero inflation in scRNA-seq data.
RESULTS: We apply a Bayesian model selection approach to unambiguously demonstrate …
