Alcohol Misuse And Abuse Among College Students: An Implementation Of A Screening Program., Tiffany Slaughter Newcomb
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Excessive alcohol use in the United States creates serious economic, health, and mortality problems (CountyHealthRankings, 2018). College students experience high rates of use, binge drinking, and 20% of college students meet the criteria for alcohol use disorder [AUD] (NIH, 2014). Screening by healthcare providers (HCPs) in the student health setting is critical and a recommended strategy for reducing negative consequences of alcohol use experienced by college students (US Preventive Services Task Force, 2018).
Aims: The objective of this project was to implement an alcohol screening program among college-age undergraduate students in a university student health center.

Longer deployments, shorter times at home between the deployments and combat exposure are the greatest contributors …
A Unique Type Of Loneliness: Infertility In Nineteenth-Century America, Abigail Butler
A Unique Type Of Loneliness: Infertility In Nineteenth-Century America, Abigail Butler
Theses and Dissertations from 2020
Many diaries and letters written by nineteenth-century Americans display the aching for parenthood and pain of loss due to miscarriage. Though some women felt joy or relief when they recognized they had miscarried or were not pregnant, infertility negatively affected the everyday lives of many men and women in the nineteenth century. Infertility not only disturbed their personal beliefs of family and their role in society, but could cause marital discord, feeling outcast from society, and could lead to other health problems. Women in slavery faced even more serious consequences that included being sold away from their family and/or receiving …

Evaluating Family Satisfaction On An Advanced Certification Palliative Care Unit., Ruby Aebersold
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Inpatient palliative care programs with The Joint Commission (TJC) Advanced Certification for Palliative Care are accountable for evaluating multiple health outcomes, including family satisfaction. A midwestern urban hospital’s palliative care unit received certification in January 2019. To comply with TJC standards, a clear data management and evaluation plan for family satisfaction data was needed. Investigation of the previous family satisfaction measure processes revealed areas in need of improvement in the satisfaction survey distribution, data collection, and evaluation processes. Satisfaction surveys were often unable to be distributed to families of deceased patients because the documented mailing address was a nursing facility. …

Examining Provider Perceptions And Roles Associated To Breastfeeding Support And Medical Management In Primary Care, Meghan Ganio Molinari
Graduate Theses
Background: Human milk is recommended as the exclusive source of nutrition for all infants in the first six months of life. Current rates of exclusive breastfeeding at six months are well below the public health recommendations (24.9% as of 2015). New mothers may experience many challenges which impact both breastfeeding initiation and duration rates in the postpartum period. Studies indicate that breastfeeding rates improve when women receive a combination of prenatal education coupled with postnatal support. Primary care practitioners in outpatient settings have a unique opportunity to provide lactation education, support, and medical management for their patients to improve …

The Aids Virus And The Galvanization Of The Lgbtq Movement For Equality, Michael Ernest Wachowski
Graduate Theses
The LGBTQ community was greatly altered by the AIDS crisis and the organizations that were founded in the 1980s. AIDS would become associated with those of the gay community during the early years of the crisis. The government and leading health officials perpetuated the public’s ignorance about the relativity new disease leading to more misunderstandings and mishandlings of the HIV/AIDS crisis. The disease did not discriminate among people, however, and quickly spread throughout many of the communities in the U.S. Organizations with roots in the LGBTQ community established themselves during the 1980s to deal with not only the AIDS crisis, …

Effect Of S100b Deletion On Membrane Properties And Localization Of Ncald And Hpca, Natasha Hesketh
Effect Of S100b Deletion On Membrane Properties And Localization Of Ncald And Hpca, Natasha Hesketh
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Calcium signaling is particularly important for neuronal function. Neurons utilize a wide range of calcium-binding proteins. Dysregulation of such proteins is linked to neurodegeneration. Neurocalcin delta (NCALD), hippocalcin (HPCA), and S100B are calcium sensors that are expressed in the hippocampus, a brain region essential to memory and severely damaged in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Despite the potential importance of these proteins, we do not fully understand the physiological significance of their relationship. Because NCALD and HPCA are known to interact with S100B, we hypothesized that the loss of S100B affects NCALD and HPCA localization, and therefore electrical properties, of hippocampal neurons. …

With mortality rates of liver cancer doubling in the last 20 years, this disease is on the rise and has become the fifth most common cancer in men and the seventh most common cancer in women. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents approximately 90% of all primary liver cancers and is a major global health concern. Patients with HCC can be managed curatively with surgical resection or with liver transplantation, if they are diagnosed at an early stage. Unfortunately, most patients with HCC present with advanced stages of the disease and have underlying liver dysfunction, which allows only 15% of patients to …

Clusters Of Individuals Experiences Form A Continuum Of Persistent Non-Symbolic Experiences In Adults, Jeffery A. Martin
Clusters Of Individuals Experiences Form A Continuum Of Persistent Non-Symbolic Experiences In Adults, Jeffery A. Martin
CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century
Persistent forms of nondual awareness, enlightenment, mystical experience, and so forth (Persistent Non-Symbolic Experience) have been reported since antiquity. Though sporadic research has been performed on these experiences, the scientific literature has yet to report a large-scale cognitive psychology study of this population. Method: Assessment of the subjective experience of 319 adult participants reporting persistent non-symbolic experience was undertaken using 6-12 hour semi-structured interviews and evaluated using grounded theory and thematic analysis. Results: Five core, consistent categories of change were uncovered: sense-of-self, cognition, affect, perception, and memory. Participants’ reports formed phenomenological groups in which the types of change …

Decoding The Mechanisms Underlying Cell-Fate Decision-Making During Stem Cell Differentiation By Random Circuit Perturbation., Bin Huang, Mingyang Lu, Madeline Galbraith, Herbert Levine, Jose N Onuchic, Dongya Jia
Faculty Research 2020
Stem cells can precisely and robustly undergo cellular differentiation and lineage commitment, referred to as stemness. However, how the gene network underlying stemness regulation reliably specifies cell fates is not well understood. To address this question, we applied a recently developed computational method, random circuit perturbation (RACIPE), to a nine-component gene regulatory network (GRN) governing stemness, from which we identified robust gene states. Among them, four out of the five most probable gene states exhibit gene expression patterns observed in single mouse embryonic cells at 32-cell and 64-cell stages. These gene states can be robustly predicted by …

Masters Theses/Capstone Projects
Athletic Training Education Programs are in the midst of major clinical and educational reforms following the release of the Strategic Alliance Degree Statement under the direction of the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Athletic Training has historically been a bachelor’s-level entry degree. The new degree standards under CAATE will make the profession a master’s-level entry degree. Limited research exists on how the Strategic Alliance Degree Statement and the transition of the degree will affect the profession of Athletic Training in the short or long term due to the limited number of programs who have already completed the …

Hybrid Cyclic/Linear Peptides In A Multi-Component Lipid Structure As A Sirna Delivery System, Abdulaziz Alasmari
Hybrid Cyclic/Linear Peptides In A Multi-Component Lipid Structure As A Sirna Delivery System, Abdulaziz Alasmari
Pharmaceutical Sciences (MS) Theses
Delivering siRNA is challenging due to many obstacles, such as extremely short in vivo half-life, rapid elimination via glomerular filtration, and inability to cross cell membranes due to the hydrophilic and negatively-charged nature. Thus, a delivery system is needed to deliver the siRNA into the cells by crossing the negatively-charged phospholipid cell membrane. The goal of this project was to design hybrid cyclic-linear peptides as siRNA delivery system. We designed and synthesized hybrid cyclic-linear peptides [R5K]W5, [R6K]W6, and [R5K]W7 containing positively-charged arginine residues attached to hydrophobic tryptophan chains for more efficient interaction with siRNA and to improve siRNA internalization into …

Hyperammonaemia in children can lead to grave consequences in the form of cerebral oedema, severe neurological impairment and even death. In infants and children, common causes of hyperammonaemia include urea cycle disorders or organic acidaemias. Few studies have assessed the role of extracorporeal therapies in the management of hyperammonaemia in neonates and children. Moreover, consensus guidelines are lacking for the use of non-kidney replacement therapy (NKRT) and kidney replacement therapies (KRTs, including peritoneal dialysis, continuous KRT, haemodialysis and hybrid therapy) to manage hyperammonaemia in neonates and children. Prompt treatment with KRT and/or NKRT, the choice of which depends on the …
