Asthma Pathophysiology, Chad Webster
Asthma Pathophysiology, Chad Webster
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Asthma is a chronic underlying condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It has a variety of issues that it may cause including shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, airway inflammation and swelling among many others. These issues usually arise from a potential trigger (environmental or genetic) and can cause an hyper-responsive airway issue. The Doctor of Nursing Practice practitioner should be extremely knowledgeable and trained on the different types of interventions and implications when dealing with asthma. The intention of this poster is to educate students on the importance of understanding the pathophysiology of asthma and its effect on the …

Previous And Active Tuberculosis Increases Risk Of Death And Prolongs Recovery In Patients With Covid-19, Karla Therese L. Sy, Nel Jason L. Haw, Jhanna Uy
Health Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: There is a growing literature on the association of SARS-CoV-2 and other chronic conditions, such as noncommunicable diseases. However, little is known about the impact of coinfection with tuberculosis. We aimed to compare the risk of death and recovery, as well as time-to-death and time-to-recovery, in COVID-19 patients with and without tuberculosis.
Methods: We created a 4:1 propensity score matched sample of COVID-19 patients without and with tuberculosis, using COVID-19 surveillance data in the Philippines. We conducted a longitudinal cohort analysis of matched COVID-19 patients as of May 17, 2020, following them until June 15, 2020. The …

As the demands for the conduct of clinical trials rise, it becomes increasingly important to establish a quantitative means of estimating the appropriate staffing resource to coordinate trial related activities. There has been a limited amount of research conducted to evaluate methods or tools to measure workload in the clinical trial setting. A literature search revealed a gap in the literature about tools used to measure workload and its impact on clinical trial performance and job satisfaction. The aim of this pilot project was to test the Ontario Protocol Assessment Level (OPAL) complexity rating tool in generating quantitative measurements of …
Implementing A Loneliness Assessment Tool In An Older Adult Population, Marquette Leach
Implementing A Loneliness Assessment Tool In An Older Adult Population, Marquette Leach
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts
Abstract
Loneliness is a subjective experience characterized by a profound decrease in the amount and the quality of desired social connectedness. Community-dwelling older adults are particularly vulnerable to loneliness because of age-related changes such as the loss of driving privileges, loss of a spouse, living alone, socioeconomic changes caused by retirement, and a lack of access to meaningful social activities. These factors diminish an older adult’s sense of belonging, the quality of their social relationships, and the degree to which they are socially engaged. Loneliness presents a significant threat not only to the psychosocial wellbeing of older adults, but also …

Purpose: To develop and implement an organization-based focused medical assistant (MA) Training Program for all newly hired, previously untrained MAs resulting in zero errors in medication administration, blood pressure (BP) measurements, and pediatric growth chart measurements and documentation.
Background and Significance: Ambulatory Care Clinics models are traditionally staffed by MAs who come with a wide range of education or experience leading to an assortment of skills abilities and competencies. To provide safe and effective high-quality patient care it is imperative that MAs are competent in many skills (MAERB, 2015). With no standardized training program and no system in place to …
Using The Copes Acronym To Improve Nurses’ Response Time In The First Three Minutes Of A Code Blue: A Quality Improvement Project, Linda Baker
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts
Abstract
Literature consensus indicates overall Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) survival rates have remained unchanged despite equipment, drugs, and training improvements. Preparing and educating nurses for the inevitable Code Blue (cardiopulmonary event) is a sound and prudent practice. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to provide targeted CPR education, including timely Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and the COPES acronym as part of Basic Life Support (BLS) by improving nurses’ focus and automaticity in the initial minutes of Code Blue events. Combining multiple teaching methods including active learning scenarios (mock codes), question and answer sessions, audio-visuals (technical and non-technical), and …

From Case Study As Symptom To Case Study As Sinthome: Engaging Lacan And Irigaray On "Thinking In Cases" As Psychoanalytic Pedagogy, Erica Freeman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation accomplishes two goals. First, this dissertation articulates a Lacanian account of the epistemological and historical presuppositions of the psychoanalytic case study genre, while engaging reflexively with extant Foucauldian scholarship on this genre as well as feminist psychoanalyst Luce Irigaray’s criticisms of Lacan. Irigaray’s critique is engaged in order to tarry with its implications for a Lacanian approach to the psychoanalytic case study genre. Second, this dissertation critically examines the significance of Lacan’s (re)reading, in Seminar V, of Joan Riviere’s (1929) “Womanliness as Masquerade” in the midst of his oral teachings on the psychoanalytic concepts of castration and …

Aphasia Friendly Medication Instructions: Effects On Comprehension In Persons With And Without Aphasia, Anna Saylor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Accessible health information supports people to understand and manage chronic medical conditions and is frequently presented via text. Comprehension of written health information becomes more difficult for people with language impairments, such as aphasia. Nine people with aphasia (PWA) and nine people without aphasia (PWoA), participated in this study. Each participant reviewed two unmodified medication instructions and two modified medication instructions using aphasia-friendly principles, then answered eight multiple choice questions and provided their preferences. Results showed that PWA demonstrated improved comprehension given modifications, but PWoA’s comprehension did not improve with modifications. Group comparison in the modified condition demonstrated that PWoA …
New Graduate Nurses Experiences During Their Transition From Novice To Competent And How Mentorship Post Residency Affect Their Experiences, Kelsey N. Murphy
New Graduate Nurses Experiences During Their Transition From Novice To Competent And How Mentorship Post Residency Affect Their Experiences, Kelsey N. Murphy
MSN Capstone Projects
Staffing competent nurses in specialized areas poses a unique challenge to hospitals across the country. Competent and experienced RNs are leaving the bedside for a multitude of reasons including dissatisfaction in workplace environment, retirement, and hospitals are facing a shortage of skilled nurses in acute care (Valdez, 2008). To address this growing concern and meet increasingly complex health care demands, hospitals are relying on nursing schools to produce competent graduate nurses (GNs) (Valdez, 2008). Hospitals recruit and hire GNs for highly specialized roles in acute care areas despite the stressors accompanied with these roles. Clinical educators have the opportunity to …

Efficient Non-Epigenetic Activation Of Hiv Latency Through The T-Cell Receptor Signalosome., Joseph Hokello, Adhikarimayum Lakhikumar Sharma, Mudit Tyagi
Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers
Human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) can either undergo a lytic pathway to cause productive systemic infections or enter a latent state in which the integrated provirus remains transcriptionally silent for decades. The ability to latently infect T-cells enables HIV-1 to establish persistent infections in resting memory CD4+ T-lymphocytes which become reactivated following the disruption or cessation of intensive drug therapy. The maintenance of viral latency occurs through epigenetic and non-epigenetic mechanisms. Epigenetic mechanisms of HIV latency regulation involve the deacetylation and methylation of histone proteins within nucleosome 1 (nuc-1) at the viral long terminal repeats (LTR) such that the inhibition …

A Bioethical Paradigm For Enhanced, Post Or Transhumans In Medicine And Biological Research, Roderick Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation the question addressed is the ethical protocol that should be used when enhanced, post or transhumans present themselves as patients to hospitals, or as subjects for scientific research. With the advent of the birth of four children who were genetically engineered in China to be resistant to HIV, I contend that transhumans are already here, and the prevailing Western paradigm of principlism, while good, is not adequate to the task. I explore the basic religious argument that can be used against or in favor of what I call human-directed human evolution. I show how the fears of …

Therapeutic Potential Of A Ketogenic Diet In The Treatment Of Major Depressive Disorder, Jordan A. Murrin
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the second most common mental health condition and a leading cause of disability in the world. It is theorized that MDD develops from a combination of biological, psychological, and social stressors. The condition is typically treated using pharmaceuticals and psychotherapy. However, not all individuals with MDD have access to or choose to use these treatments, or may prefer to incorporate therapeutic lifestyle changes such as exercise, sleep, and healthy eating. Even with treatment, MDD can alter brain structure and function, leading to the development of comorbid mental health and chronic metabolic conditions like obesity, cardiovascular …

Bipolar Disorder, Heather Guthrie
Bipolar Disorder, Heather Guthrie
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Bipolar disorder is a mental disorder that causes severe swings in mood, energy, activity, concentration, and activities of daily living. These mood swings range from extremely euphoric, irritable, or animated behavior (manic) to despondent, apathetic, or dejected periods (depressive). This phenomenon was why this disorder was known as manic-depressive or manic depression. The need to understand the multiple factors regarding the disease process of this disorder, and the importance of treatment is vital for the safety and health of people across the world inflicted by bipolar disorder. Education is the key to how this disorder affects the entire trajectory of …

Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, Stacey Carey
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a severe and rare form of congenital heart disease with no known cause that decreases life expectancy and occurs during fetal cardiac development. Without treatment HLHS is fatal. HLHS consists of the underdevelopment of the left-sided heart structures leading to the failure of the left ventricle to support the systemic circulation resulting in single-ventricle physiology (Mussa & Barron, 2016). Prior to the 1980s HLHS was a universally lethal condition until 1982, when surgical management became available (Mussa & Barron, 2016). However, surgical management is not curative because the heart can never be “normal” (Mussa …

The immune system is a complex cohesive network. It requires every cell to work efficiently at maintaining homeostasis. It also prevents and repairs damage from internal and external pathogens. Recent research has focused on the concept of inflammaging, which is defined as age-related changes that occur in the immune system leading to dysfunction. The current understanding is that inflammaging contributes to the development of chronic diseases including; Type II Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, Cancer, autoimmune disorders, neurological disorders, Alzheimer and Parkinson’s disease. The underlying pathophysiology of inflammaging is chronic inflammation and the imbalance of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mediators. This imbalance leads …

Faculty Research 2020
Mediastinal lymphadenopathy and auto-antibodies are clinical phenomena during ischemic heart failure pointing to an autoimmune response against the heart. T and B cells have been convincingly demonstrated to be activated after myocardial infarction, a prerequisite for the generation of mature auto-antibodies. Yet, little is known about the immunoglobulin isotype repertoire thus pathological potential of anti-heart auto-antibodies during heart failure. We obtained human myocardial tissue from ischemic heart failure patients and induced experimental MI in rats. We found that anti-heart autoimmunity persists during heart failure. Rat mediastinal lymph nodes are enlarged and contain active secondary follicles with mature isotype-switched IgG2a B …

INTRODUCTION: In Canada, a series of recent public health policies and interventions have successfully led to a decline in national tobacco use rates. However, tobacco use among young adults remains high and the tobacco industry continues to place a strong marketing emphasis towards young adults on university campuses. In response, many universities across Canada are beginning to adopt smoke-free or tobacco-free campus policies. While the effectiveness of smoke-free and tobaccofree campus policies has been demonstrated in several countries, little is known about the attitudinal responses of university students, faculty and staff towards these policies. As such, we conducted a review …

Does Administration Of Antipsychotic Medications Reduce The Incidence And Duration Of Delirium In Critically Ill Adult Patients?, Ellen Brateng
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: Acute delirium is a common complication among critically ill patients. Besides the manifestation of distressing symptoms, delirium can result in negative patient outcomes. Several studies show that antipsychotics such as haloperidol are one of the most commonly used interventions for delirium despite large variability and lower quality of evidence available to advocate for their use.
Methods: A literature review was conducted to investigate current evidence on the use of antipsychotic agents for preventing and treating delirium in the intensive care unit.
Discussion: There is conflicting data concerning the prophylaxis and treatment of delirium in critically ill patients. For prophylaxis …

An Evidence-Based Approach to Understanding and Treating Electronic Cigarette Use in the Adolescent Population
Adelaide Laurel Amini College of Nursing, BYU Master of Science
Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use is popular among adolescents and leads to high levels of nicotine exposure in this population. E-cigarette use by teenagers can lead to development of nicotine addiction, chronic lung disorders, and lifelong incidence of depression, anxiety, and attention-deficit disorder. Thus, it is vital that nurse practitioners understand electronic cigarette devices and their effects on adolescent health, as well as treatment guidelines regarding nicotine dependence specific to e-cigarettes. An educational module detailing the …

While mammals tend to repair injuries, other adult vertebrates like salamanders and fish regenerate damaged tissue. One prominent hypothesis offered to explain an inability to regenerate complex tissue in mammals is a bias during healing toward strong adaptive immunity and inflammatory responses. Here we directly test this hypothesis by characterizing part of the immune response during regeneration in spiny mice (Acomys cahirinus and Acomys percivali) vs. fibrotic repair in Mus musculus. By directly quantifying cytokines during tissue healing, we found that fibrotic repair was associated with a greater release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (i.e., IL-6, CCL2, and CXCL1) …
