Oropharyngeal Airway Changes Following Orthodontic Treatment Of Anterior Open Bite In Growing Vs Non-Growing Patients, Mona Awadi, Heeyeon Suh, Joorok Park, Heesoo Oh
Orthodontics and Endodontics Theses
Introduction: Orthodontic treatment of anterior open bite can result in a counter-clockwise rotation of the mandible and a more ideal forward position of the tongue. Usually this movement is thought to increase the oropharyngeal airway. The primary aim of the present study was to evaluate changes in vertical dimension and airway in AOB patients following orthodontic treatment. Methods: 52 subjects were included in this retrospective study of anterior open bite malocclusion treated in the graduate orthodontics clinic at the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry between 2006 – 2019. Cephalometric and airway measurements were done by …

Introduction: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) may be an early symptomatic man- ifestation of Alzheimer’s disease, though published research largely neglects how to classify SCD in community-based studies.
Methods: In neuropsychologically intact Einstein Aging Study participants (n = 1115; meanage=78;63%female;30%non-White),weusedCoxmodelstoexaminetheasso- ciation between self-perceived cognitive functioning at baseline (using three different approaches) and incident amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) with covariates of age, sex, education, race/ethnicity, general (objective) cognition, depressive symp- toms, and four other SCD-related features.
Results: After a median of 3 years, 198 participants developed aMCI. In models that included all the variables, self-perceived cognitive functioning was consistently asso- ciated …

The Population Council developed High Impact Practice (HIP) briefs for three strategies that show promise for improving prevention, detection, and management of Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy (HDPs). This brief focuses on one of those strategies: detecting and managing hypertension in the extended postnatal period. Key points presented are: the extended postnatal period provides an opportunity to monitor a woman’s blood pressure (BP) and check for persistent hypertension; if BP is measured routinely at any contact with the health system during the extended postnatal period, hypertension is more likely to be detected and managed appropriately; women with pre-eclampsia have a 3.7-fold …

Here, bismuth-based nanomaterials (Bi-based NMs) are introduced as promising theranostic agents to enhance image contrast as well as for the therapeutic gain for numerous diseases. However, understanding the interaction of such novel developed nanoparticles (NPs) within a biological environment is a requisite for the translation of any promising agent from the lab bench to the clinic. This interaction delineates the fate of NPs after circulation in the body. In an ideal setting, a nano-based therapeutic agent should be eliminated via the renal clearance pathway, meanwhile it should have specific targeting to a diseased organ to reach an effective dose and …

Rho Gtpases: Big Players In Breast Cancer Initiation, Metastasis And Therapeutic Responses, Brock Humphries, Zhishan Wang, Chengfeng Yang
Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications
Rho GTPases, a family of the Ras GTPase superfamily, are key regulators of the actin cytoskeleton. They were originally thought to primarily affect cell migration and invasion; however, recent advances in our understanding of the biology and function of Rho GTPases have demonstrated their diverse roles within the cell, including membrane trafficking, gene transcription, migration, invasion, adhesion, survival and growth. As these processes are critically involved in cancer initiation, metastasis and therapeutic responses, it is not surprising that studies have demonstrated important roles of Rho GTPases in cancer. Although the majority of data indicates an oncogenic role of Rho GTPases, …

Simultaneous Bilateral Patellar Tendon Rupture In A Young Adult Male: A Case Report And Review Of The Literature., Adrian Moy, Ethan Song, Sean J. Wallace Md, Robert Teixeira Md, Daniel Torres
Department of Surgery
A bilateral patellar tendon rupture is extremely rare and has only been documented in case reports. Although the etiology remains unknown, predisposing factors include steroid usage, systemic diseases, and tendinopathies. In the present case, a healthy 33-year-old male with a prior history of bilateral patellar tendonitis and a diagnosis of Osgood-Schlatter disease during adolescence experienced simultaneous bilateral patellar tendon rupture after playing volleyball. He underwent bilateral patellar repair without complications. In the absence of trauma, spontaneous bilateral patellar tendon ruptures are associated with several predisposing factors, including systemic diseases, prior corticosteroid or fluoroquinolone usage, and history of tendinopathy. Injuries can …
