Mobile phones (MP) have become one of the most used devices for communication. Historically, enough proof has ruled out the substantial short-term effect of radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) emitted by MP on the human brain and its cognitive performance. The aim of this mini-review is to examine the different effects of electromagnetic waves emitted by MP on the human brain. We base our arguments on analyzing recent neuroimaging and electroencephalography studies that will elaborate on the effects of the human brain's exposure to the EMF’MP. Feral swine (Sus scrofa) are a destructive invasive species widespread throughout the United States that disrupt ecosystems, damage crops, and carry pathogens of concern for the health of domestic stock and humans including Brucella suis—the causative organism for swine brucellosis. In domestic swine, brucellosis results in reproductive failure due to abortions and infertility. Contact with infected feral swine poses spillover risks to domestic pigs as well as humans, companion animals, wildlife, and other livestock. Genetic factors influence the outcome of infectious diseases; therefore, genome wide association studies (GWAS) of differential immune responses among feral swine can provide …

Introduction: Surgical site infections (SSIs) account for 14-16% of nosocomial infections and are one of the major causes of increased morbidity, hospital stay, cost of care, and even mortality. Hypothermia as a risk factor for SSI is debated but there is lack of conclusive evidence. The present study explores the association of hypothermia with SSI.
Methodology: This is a prospective cohort study conducted on adult patients who underwent elective laparotomy. Patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma have undergone two or three previous therapies are now being treated with a humanized IgG1 monoclonal antibody elotuzumab (HuLuc63) that targets F7 signalling lymphocytic activation molecule F7 (SLAMF7)- a signalling lymphocytic activation molecule. It is combined with dexamethasone and lenalidomide/pomalidomide for therapy. Adverse effects associated with elotuzumab consists of peripheral neuropathy, fever, constitutional symptoms (fatigue, headache, decreased appetite), and infections. A rare side effect of interstitial lung disease has only been observed in a single case. Submassive or intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when an acute PE episode is associated with radiographic evidence of right heart strain without hemodynamic instability. Further risk stratification is important in determining whether systemic thrombolytic therapy should be administered when weighing the risks and benefits. It includes the risk of death from acute PE versus the risk of bleeding. This decision could be further complicated in institutions where there is a lack of complete therapeutic options, which increases the importance of the expertise of a pulmonologist or an intensivist to decide whether rescue reperfusion is needed. Neutrophils are key effector cells of the innate immune system, serving as a first line of defense in the response to injury and playing essential roles in the wound healing process. Following myocardial infarction (MI), neutrophils infiltrate into the infarct region to propagate inflammation and begin the initial phase of cardiac wound repair. Pro-inflammatory neutrophils release proteases to degrade extracellular matrix (ECM), a necessary step for the removal of necrotic myocytes as a prelude for scar formation. Neutrophils transition their phenotype over time to regulate MI inflammation resolution and stabilize scar formation. Neutrophils contribute to the evolution from inflammation to …

Government authorities perceiving the outgoing government is losing power at the end of term behave under the logic of strategic defection (SD), dissociating from the outgoing government once it is perceived powerless. Scc4 is an unusual bi-functional protein from Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) that functions as a type III secretion system (T3SS) chaperone and an RNA polymerase (RNAP)-binding protein. Both functions require interactions with protein partners during specific stages of the CT developmental cycle. As a T3SS chaperone, Scc4 binds Scc1 during the late stage of development to form a heterodimer complex, which chaperones the essential virulence effector, CopN. During the early-middle stage of development, Scc4 regulates T3SS gene expression by binding the σ66-containing RNAP holoenzyme. STUDY OBJECTIVES: Multiple methods for monitoring sleep-wake activity have identified sleep disturbances as risk factors for Alzheimer disease (AD). In order to identify the level of agreement between different methods, we compared sleep parameters derived from single-channel EEG (scEEG), actigraphy, and sleep diaries in cognitively normal and mildly impaired older adults.

METHODS: Two hundred ninety-three participants were monitored at home for up to six nights with scEEG, actigraphy, and sleep diaries. Total sleep time (TST), sleep efficiency (SE), sleep onset latency (SOL), and wake after sleep onset (WASO) were calculated using each of these methods. In 109 of the 293 …

Objectives: Contrast-induced nephropathy is considered a serious complication following coronary angiography increasing morbidity and mortality. Various drugs have been assessed to reduce the incidence of contrast-induced nephropathy. In this study, we compared trimetazidine and allopurinol as a pharmacological measure to reduce the incidence of contrast-induced nephropathy.

Methods: One hundred and twenty patients undergoing coronary angiography with baseline creatinine clearance more than 30 ml/minute were divided into three groups, 40 patients each. It was quite surprising that only a few undergraduate upper-level students were using citation management software on their research paper. It was more surprising that they were not aware that a lack of proper citations or cutting and pasting from other sources could be considered plagiarism in academic writings. They showed a significant reliance on direct quotations to avoid plagiarism. Cumbersome of manually adding citations in-text could be one of the reasons why undergraduate students omit referencing appropriate sources in-text as well as in the bibliography.
