Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile health (mHealth) has emerged as a new patient centric model which allows real-time collection of patient data via wearable sensors, aggregation and encryption of these data at mobile devices, and then uploading the encrypted data to the cloud for storage and access by healthcare staff and researchers. However, efficient and scalable sharing of encrypted data has been a very challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a Lightweight Sharable and Traceable (LiST) secure mobile health system in which patient data are encrypted end-to-end from a patient’s mobile device to data users. LiST enables efficient keyword search and finegrained access …

Creating Restful Environments: Applying Evidenced-Based Interventions To Increase The Patients Perceptions Of Room Quietness At Night, Timothy Marks

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Florence Nightingale first described the detrimental effects of noise on patients as an element nurses could control. Hospitalized patients who sleep in the hospital are at risk for poor periods of rest from unwanted noise in the care environment. This Doctor of Nursing Practice Project will assess interventions aimed at increasing the patient’s perception of quietness around the care environment at night for a pilot population. Swanson’s Theory of Caring will be utilized as a framework for the project. Outcomes of nursing interventions were reviewed for the improved patient perception of the care environment at night and resultant health outcomes. …

Heart Failure Self-Care At Home, Dinah Warren Jan 2020

Heart Failure Self-Care At Home, Dinah Warren

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Abstract

This evidence-based quality improvement project was implemented to improve self-care behaviors in homebound heart failure patients. Heart failure is a complex disease with significant challenges for patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, and the healthcare system. Educating and engaging patients in self-care management skills can reduce the clinical and financial burden of this disease. Heart failure self-care management skills can decrease 30-day readmission rates, improve quality of life, and reduce mortality. The self-care management program was implemented over a 6-week period. The Self-Care of Heart Failure Index (SCHFI) was administered at baseline to assess self-care and reevaluated after 6-weeks. During the …

Dental Health Factors Among Primary School Children In Southern Regions Of Ethiopia And Zambia, Gisselle Hernandez

NUTR/GLST 498b: Global Research Experiences in Nutrition and Health

Purpose: Assess oral health status, and factors affecting oral health, among primary schoolchildren in southern Ethiopia and Zambia. Methods: Visual dental assessments, anthropometric measurements, and questionnaires used to collect data among 6th and 7th grade students. Results: Although stunting rates were nearly equal, decay rates were not; 17.51% of Zambian students and 47.27% of Ethiopian students had one or more decayed teeth. Ethiopian students with dental fluorosis (74.55%) had higher rates of decay than those without the condition (p < .05). There were also significant differences between Ethiopians and Zambians regarding use of dental hygiene tools: Ethiopians were more likely to use dental sticks, while Zambians employed toothbrushes for cleaning. Conclusions: Dental health and hygiene education, focused on unique socioecological settings, could improve the oral health status of Ethiopian and Zambian children.

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Both virulent and live-attenuated porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) strains can establish persistent infection in lymphoid tissues of pigs. To investigate the mechanisms of PRRSV persistence, we performed a transcriptional analysis of inguinal lymphoid tissue collected from pigs experimentally infected with an attenuated PRRSV strain at 46 days post infection. A total of 6404 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected of which 3960 DEGs were upregulated and 2444 DEGs were downregulated. Specifically, genes involved in innate immune responses and chemokines and receptors associated with T-cell homing to lymphoid tissues were down regulated. As a result, homing of virus-specific …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Reported cases of Lyme disease in Nebraska have been assumed to be imported from other endemic areas. Previous surveillance efforts provided no evidence of established populations as only individual specimens of Ixodes scapularis (Say) had been collected. In the winter of 2018, adult I. scapularis were found on a dog at Two Rivers State Recreation Area, Douglas County, prompting tick collection at the site and nearby natural areas. In May 2019, all life stages of host-seeking I. scapularis were collected using dragging and flagging techniques in sites located near the Platte River in Douglas, Sarpy, and Saunders counties. This is …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), a pathogenic subset of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), is an important cause of hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic–uremic syndrome (HUS), and a rare cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs) with associated HUS. EHEC strains attach intimately to intestinal epithelium with formation of actin pedestals (attaching-effacing (A/E) lesions); however, the mechanism of EHEC attachment to the uroepithelium is unknown. We conducted a retrospective study on archived urinary bladder specimens from gnotobiotic piglets that naturally developed cystitis associated with EHEC O157:H7 infection following oral inoculation and fecal shedding. Paraffin-embedded bladder tissues from three piglets with cystitis and immunohistochemical …

Triggers Of Inflammatory Heart Disease, Ninaad Lasrado, Bharathi Yalaka, Jay Reddy Jan 2020

Triggers Of Inflammatory Heart Disease, Ninaad Lasrado, Bharathi Yalaka, Jay Reddy

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Inflammatory heart disease (IHD) is a group of diseases that includes pericarditis, myocarditis, and endocarditis. Although males appear to be more commonly affected than females, IHD can be seen in any age group. While the disease can be self-limiting leading to full recovery, affected individuals can develop chronic disease, suggesting that identification of primary triggers is critical for successful therapies. Adding to this complexity, however, is the fact that IHD can be triggered by a variety of infectious and non-infectious causes that can also occur as secondary events to primary insults. In this review, we discuss the immunological insights into …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Diabetes type II were known to affect several organs in the body including bone, thus diabetes type II patients have higher risk of bone fracture. One of the important features in diabetes type II is low level of anti-inflammatory cytokine Interleukin-10 (IL-10) and gut leak condition. Both of these conditions have the role in diabetes induction, progression and exacerbation. Autogenous Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been widely utilized for enhancing bone healing treatment. Due to the diabetes condition affecting one of the most common and widely used MSCs source, the bone, this study was done to investigate the effect of …

Role Of Chondrocyte Antigen Presentation In Osteoarthritis, Panjana Sengprasert Jan 2020

Role Of Chondrocyte Antigen Presentation In Osteoarthritis, Panjana Sengprasert

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Osteoarthritis (OA) is an inflammatory disorder characterized by degeneration of joint components, especially the cartilage. Chondrocytes are found in articular cartilage and play a role in cartilage production and degradation. Several studies found that chondrocytes not only control the cartilage metabolism, but also play a role in immune responses. However, the role of chondrocytes in the pathogenesis of OA is still unclear. In this study, we investigated the responses of OA chondrocytes after stimulating with IFN-γ and proteoglycan aggrecan and also determined antigen presentation function of chondrocytes to present proteoglycan aggrecan peptide to T cells. We found that OA chondrocyte …

Chronic Care Model For Management Of Diabetes Mellitus, Junecia White

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Diabetes mellitus is a serious chronic disease affecting individuals at various stages of life. More than 114 million Americans are at risk of developing complications of diabetes. It is the leading cause of kidney failure, nontraumatic lower-limb amputations, heart disease, stroke, and new cases of blindness among adults in the United States. This quality improvement project sought to understand if important clinical indicators of diabetes mellitus such as HbA1c, blood pressure, serum cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, serum creatinine; and estimated glomerular filtration rate would improve after implementation of a team-based guideline-informed approach to diabetes care management. The chronic care …

Periodic Skills Education To Improve Competency In New Nurses, Karen Broomes-James Jan 2020

Periodic Skills Education To Improve Competency In New Nurses, Karen Broomes-James

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

On entry into the nursing profession, new graduate nurses (NGNs) possess some knowledge and skills competency but self-report learning gaps in various areas. Experienced nurses have reported that new nurses do not always have knowledge and competency in essential nursing skills. Undergraduate nursing programs and organization orientation programs provide valuable foundational knowledge but are sometimes limited in providing multiple exposures to content. Lagging skills acquisition contributes to self-doubt, lack of confidence and high attrition among NGNs. There is little data in the literature about the provision of supplemental education to new nurses immediately after orientation, and this doctor of nursing …
