Evaluating Gene Drive Approaches For Public Benefit, Michael R. Santos
Evaluating Gene Drive Approaches For Public Benefit, Michael R. Santos
United States Public Health Resources
Gene drive approaches—those which bias inheritance of a genetic element in a population of sexually reproducing organisms—have the potential to provide important public benefits. The spread of selected genetic elements in wild populations of organisms may help address certain challenges, such as transmission of vector-borne human and animal diseases and biodiversity loss due to invasive animals. Adapting various naturally occurring gene drive mechanisms to these aims is a long-standing research area, and recent advances in genetics have made engineering gene drive systems significantly more technically feasible. Gene drive approaches would act through changes in natural environments, thus robust methods to …

Cytokines mediate and control immune and inflammatory responses. Complex interactions exist among cytokines, inflammation, and the innate and adaptive immune responses in maintaining homeostasis, health, and well-being. On-demand, local delivery of anti-inflammatory drugs to target tissues provides an approach for more effective drug dosing while reducing the adverse effects of systemic drug delivery. This work demonstrates a proof-of-concept theranostic approach for inflammation based on analyte-kissing induced signaling, whereby a drug (in this report, aspirin) can be released upon the detection of a target level of a proinflammatory cytokine (i.e., interferon-γ (IFN-γ)) in real time. The structure-switching aptamer-based biosensor described here …

Madison Keegan
Faculty Advisor: Dr. Elaine Halesey, Ed.D., R.T.(R)(QM)
The Savi Scout is a localization procedure used to help identify non-palpable breast lesions under mammographic or ultrasound guidance, by way of placement of a non-radioactive reflector through a delivery system. The modality of mammography uses screening and diagnostic exams by creating images of the breast to better visualize anatomy as well as possible lesions. The radiographic detail determines the type of breast tissue such as fatty, dense, or extremely dense and with age the tissue type can change. Non-palpable breast lesions are identified with imaging …

This poster project explains an interventional radiology (IR) procedure called Balloon Kyphoplasty (BKP). BKP is a procedure that involves the insertion of cement into the vertebral column due to vertebrae fractures throughout the spine. Vertebral fractures can happen due to a number of reasons, however, multiple myeloma is the main focus of this project. Multiple Myeloma (MM) is the second most hematological malignancy and there is no cure. MM affects several parts of the body but the most common are the skull, vertebral column, long bones, and the hip and pelvis region. There are several advantages to having BKP done. …
Interventional Breast Imaging, Agripina Torres
Interventional Breast Imaging, Agripina Torres
Medical Imaging Senior Posters
Interventional breast imaging is essential in the diagnosis of abnormal findings in the breast tissue. Interventional breast imaging began as an open excision; the breast was biopsied through a surgical procedure that required the whole breast to be excised, thus allowing a sample of the breast tissue to be obtained. With this type of biopsy, the patient would have a longer recovery time, a higher cost, and, in some cases, unnecessary excisions. Image guided breast intervention, however, has led to the decline of open excisions. Biopsies performed under the guidance of an imaging modality allow breast interventions to be safe, …

The Impact Of Covid-19 On Radiation Oncology Treatments, Lauren Fink
Medical Imaging Senior Posters
When the COVID-19 pandemic began, hospitals became overwhelmed. There was a lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) and a lack of capacity within emergency departments, which caused a panic amongst medical facilities. Facilities were forced to prioritize patients and cancel appointments that were not urgent. Many doctors’ appointments were switched to tele-visits to limit exposure to the virus and to allow priority to COVID-19 patients. Not only were diagnostic testing and treatments postponed or canceled, but news was published that those who were immunosuppressed need to take extra precautions because the risk of fatality is greater for those with preexisting …

Medical Imaging Senior Posters
Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), also referred to as three-dimensional digital mammography provides a new technique that can aid in dense breast imaging. Mammography is the process of creating images of the breast for screening and diagnostic purposes by using low dose radiation. Screening mammograms are performed once a patient is age forty and then annually after that. It is used to provide an earlier detection of breast cancer for a better chance of survival. Diagnostic mammograms are performed when a patient has a strong family history of breast cancer or clinical evidence, such as, a breast lump. Most cancerous lesions …
Age Differences In Hippocampal Glutamate Modulation During Associative Learning And Memory: A Proton Functional Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1h Fmrs) Study, Chaitali Anand
Wayne State University Dissertations
Episodic and associative memory decline is one of the earliest cognitive impairments in normal aging and among the defining cognitive features of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Since, age-related cognitive decline gradually devolves into AD, with neuropathology preceding cognitive changes by many years, the identification of biomarkers of early disease progression is crucial. Reduction in glutamate, the main excitatory neurotransmitter involved in associative memory, in key brain regions such as the hippocampus, has been theorized as one of the cellular mechanisms underlying cognitive decline in aging and AD. A few neuroimaging studies that demonstrated a link between older adults’ weaker cognitive performance …

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a clonal malignancy characterized by genetic heterogeneity due to recurrent gene mutations. Treatment with cytotoxic chemotherapy has been the standard of care for more than half of a century. Although much progress has been made toward improving treatment related mortality rate in the past few decades, long term overall survival has stagnated. Exciting developments of gene mutation-targeted therapeutic agents are now changing the landscape in AML treatment. New agents offer more clinical options for patients and also confer a more promising outcome. Since Midostaurin, a FLT3 inhibitor, was first approved by US FDA in 2017 …

The primary purpose of this integrative review of the literature is to describe healthcare provider’s recognition of anosognosia in individuals with comorbid mental health disorders, as a differentiating diagnosis needing preeminent early intervention. The secondary purpose is to examine how anosognosia influences outcomes in the population of individuals with severe mental illness. It is expected that early recognition by clinicians and implementation of additional interventions to address anosognosia as the most influential comorbidity of schizophrenia, will decrease exacerbations and improve treatment and patient outcomes.
A literature review exploring clinician’s acknowledgement of anosognosia was performed using various databases. Search terms included: …
Professional Liability Insurance For Athletic Trainers: A Cross Sectional Study Of Athletic Trainers Who Do Per Diem Work, Kameelah J. Belgrave
Professional Liability Insurance For Athletic Trainers: A Cross Sectional Study Of Athletic Trainers Who Do Per Diem Work, Kameelah J. Belgrave
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Context: Many secondary school athletic trainers (ATs) complete per diem work as a way to supplement their income. Working per diem means the AT provides services to events that are not part of their main employment. Since this type of work is not connected to their main employment, the AT may lack appropriate professional liability insurance (PLI). PLI is a type of insurance that protects healthcare professionals from bearing the entire cost of defending a malpractice claim made by a former or current patient. Anecdotally, many ATs believe that the PLI provided by their main employer covers all health care …

Detection Of A Peptide Hormone - Somatostatin - Label-Free Split-Aptameric Probes, Charles A. Dowis
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Peptide hormones are important biomolecules that transduce downstream effects such as cell proliferation, regulation, and gene expression. Their levels have been upregulated in various disorders such as cancer, yet detection methods are lacking. We designed two split aptamer-based assays for the detection of a peptide hormone – Somatostatin (SST) – with different signal readouts: fluorescent readout based on light-up aptamers and the colorimetric readout of ABTS peroxidation from a G-quadruplex. We used an already selected split-aptamer –SSTA5–for SST for our designs and we had expected the developed detection systems to exhibit detection and quantification capabilities that would hopefully allow their …

Evaluating The Nutritional Status Of Peruvian Born Children, Chantelle Garcia Medina
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Background: Rural areas of Peru lack access to healthcare resources and poor nutritional knowledge of what should be given to their children throughout their growth and development. The majority of the rural areas rely on a high carbohydrate, moderate vegetable diet, and lacking a protein source. Lower protein intake can lead to problems of malnutrition and growth stunting. Families rarely have monetary resources to provide a protein at every meal for the entire family. There is also a lack of a clean water supply, free of parasites and helminths. Caregivers often rely on replenishing intake with other fluids high …

Investigating Aggression In Huntington Disease, Chloe E. Larochelle
Investigating Aggression In Huntington Disease, Chloe E. Larochelle
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Huntington Disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is caused by a CAG trinucleotide repeat expansion in the huntingtin gene. The onset of the disease is defined by the presence of motor deficits, such as chorea. However, cognitive and psychiatric symptoms often develop before motor onset and typically have a larger impact on patient quality of life. Psychiatric symptoms include depression, anxiety, and OCD, but also aggression and irritability, which have been comparatively understudied due to stigma. Currently, treatments to modify these behaviors in premanifest HD patients are not consistently effective and often have side effects, creating a need for …
