Childhood obesity is a serious public health problem worldwide. Perturbations in the gut microbiota composition have been associated with the development of obesity in both children and adults. Probiotics, on the other hand, are proven to restore the composition of the gut microbiome which helps reduce the development of obesity. However, data on the effect of probiotics on gut microbiota and its association with childhood obesity is limited. This study aims to determine the effect of probiotics supplement intervention on gut microbiota profiles in obese and normal-weight children. A total of 37 children, 17 normal weight, and 20 overweight school …

CRISPR–Cas is an anti-viral mechanism of prokaryotes that has been widely adopted for genome editing. To make CRISPR–Cas genome editing more controllable and safer to use, anti-CRISPR proteins have been recently exploited to prevent excessive/prolonged Cas nuclease cleavage. Anti-CRISPR (Acr) proteins are encoded by (pro)phages/(pro)viruses, and have the ability to inhibit their host’s CRISPR–Cas systems. We have built an online database AcrDB (http://bcb.unl.edu/AcrDB) by scanning ∼19 000 genomes of prokaryotes and viruses with AcrFinder, a recently developed AcrAca (Acr-associated regulator) operon prediction program. Proteins in Acr-Aca operons were further processed by two machine learning-based programs (AcRanker and PaCRISPR) to obtain …

Imaginary Companions: The Children Who Create Them And The Adult Response, Sarah Tsang
Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
As a part of childhood development, the need for companionship and socialization are a necessity. But what happens when a child does not have any friends or adults to socialize with? Imaginary friends (also known as imaginary companions or ICs) are created to befriend children and help them develop their emotions. This thesis is a literary study about the field of imaginary companions, the children who create them, and the response the environment has to these “invisible friends.”

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-
Type 1 diabetes is an endocrine disease which develops because of an autoimmune response that targets and degrades insulin-producing islet cells in the pancreas. The destruction of beta cells results in an inability to produce insulin, a hormone that is essential in the regulation of blood glucose concentration. The incidence of type 1 diabetes continues to increase in the United States. The pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes is influenced by several favors including autoimmunity, genetic predispositions, and environmental insults. The disease typically manifests as a combination of symptoms, most commonly polydipsia, polyphagia, and polyuria. Documented symptoms, elevated blood glucose levels, …

Biology is unique from other science disciplines in that concepts taught in core classes can inform our student’s understanding of sex and gender. A biology major encounters lessons on sex determination, sexual reproduction, and sex characteristics in their courses. The language used in these units matters. It is imperative that educators consider how the language, examples, and content that we use in classrooms drive (or not) inclusivity for gender- and sexuality-diverse (GSD) (aka LGBTQ+) individuals. We chose to analyze four college-level human anatomy/physiology (AP) textbooks for GSD population inclusivity. We adopted a queer theory framework to critically examine how sex, …

Diagnosis And Treatment Of Peripheral Artery Disease (Pad) In Interventional Radiography, Evan Busher
Medical Imaging Senior Posters
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a narrowing of the peripheral arteries which supply blood to the legs, arms, stomach, and heart. This narrowing occurs due to atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of plaque or fat on the walls of the blood vessels. Atherosclerosis results in the restriction of blood flow to the desired site, which is most often the legs. The most common symptoms for PAD are cramps or pain in the leg when walking, which subsides during periods of rest. A brachial-ankle index test can be administered to monitor the blood pressures in the upper and lower limbs to …

I have been an educator for 24 years and have loved every minute of it. During this time, I have seen students of all cadres come and go, but they all have one thing in common - their innate fear of written assessments. In general, students in high school tend to have a different perspective on education than their adult counterparts - they tend to procrastinate, are usually …

Dysfunctional Mitochondrial Biogenesis: A Potential Underlying Cause For Metabolic Diseases, Caroline Ann Hunter
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Mitochondria are essential organelles that play crucial roles in many aspects of cellular homeostasis. More importantly, the mitochondria are home to the majority of the metabolic pathways within the cell and are responsible for producing most of the cell’s useable energy in the form of adenine triphosphate (ATP) through oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). In mammals, the majority of OXPHOS complex subunits are encoded by nuclear deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA); however, 13 core subunits essential for the function of OXPHOS complexes I, III, IV, and V are encoded in the mitochondrial (mt) DNA (mtDNA) and are synthesized within the mitochondria by its own …

Our current knowledge of host–virus interactions in biofilms is limited to computational predictions based on laboratory experiments with a small number of cultured bacteria. However, natural biofilms are diverse and chiefly composed of uncultured bacteria and archaea with no viral infection patterns and lifestyle predictions described to date. Herein, we predict the first DNA sequence-based host–virus interactions in a natural biofilm. Using single-cell genomics and metagenomics applied to a hot spring mat of the Cone Pool in Mono County, California, we provide insights into virus–host range, lifestyle and distribution across different mat layers. Thirty-four out of 130 single cells contained …
