Intrinsic Measures And Shape Analysis Of The Intratemporal Facial Nerve, Thomas Hudson, Bradley Gare, Daniel Allen, Hanif Ladak, Sumit Agrawal

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Hypothesis: To characterize anatomical measurements and shape variation of the facial nerve within the temporal bone, and to create statistical shape models (SSMs) to enhance knowledge of temporal bone anatomy and aid in automated segmentation.

Background: The facial nerve is a fundamental structure in otologic surgery, and detailed anatomic knowledge with surgical experience are needed to avoid its iatrogenic injury. Trainees can use simulators to practice surgical techniques, however manual segmentation required to develop simulations can be time consuming. Consequently, automated segmentation algorithms have been developed that use atlas registration, SSMs, and deep learning.

Methods: Forty cadaveric temporal bones were …

© 2020 The Authors. Human Brain Mapping published by Wiley Periodicals LLC. The zona incerta (ZI) is a small gray matter region of the deep brain first identified in the 19th century, yet direct in vivo visualization and characterization has remained elusive. Noninvasive detection of the ZI and surrounding region could be critical to further our understanding of this widely connected but poorly understood deep brain region and could contribute to the development and optimization of neuromodulatory therapies. We demonstrate that high resolution (submillimetric) longitudinal (T1) relaxometry measurements at high magnetic field strength (7 T) can be used to delineate …

Striatal Acetylcholine Helps To Preserve Functional Outcomes In A Mouse Model Of Stroke, Daniela F. Goncalves, Monica S. Guzman, Robert Gros, André R. Massensini, Robert Bartha, Vania F. Prado, Marco A.M. Prado

Medical Biophysics Publications

Acetylcholine (ACh) has been suggested to facilitate plasticity and improve functional recovery after different types of brain lesions. Interestingly, numerous studies have shown that striatal cholinergic interneurons are relatively resistant to acute ischemic insults, but whether ACh released by these neurons enhances functional recovery after stroke is unknown. We investigated the role of endogenous striatal ACh in stroke lesion volume and functional outcomes following middle cerebral artery occlusion to induce focal ischemia in striatum-selective vesicular acetylcholine transporter-deficient mice (stVAChT-KO). As transporter expression is almost completely eliminated in the striatum of stVAChT-KO mice, ACh release is nearly abolished in this area. …

Background/Objective: Structural brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is not mandatory in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research or clinical guidelines. We aimed to explore the use of structural brain MRI in AD/mild cognitive impairment (MCI) trials over the past 10 years and determine the frequency with which inclusion of standardized structural MRI acquisitions detects comorbid vascular and non-vascular pathologies. Methods: We systematically searched ClinicalTrials.gov for AD clinical trials to determine their neuroimaging criteria and then used data from an AD/MCI cohort who underwent standardized MRI protocols, to determine type and incidence of clinically relevant comorbid pathologies. Results: Of 210 AD clinical trials, …

The Effect Of Sex On Immune Responses To A Homocitrullinated Peptide In The Dr4-Transgenic Mouse Model Of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ewa Cairns, Sheri Saunders, David A. Bell, Garth Blackler, Patrick Lac, Lillian Barra Jan 2020

The Effect Of Sex On Immune Responses To A Homocitrullinated Peptide In The Dr4-Transgenic Mouse Model Of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ewa Cairns, Sheri Saunders, David A. Bell, Garth Blackler, Patrick Lac, Lillian Barra

Bone and Joint Institute

© 2020 The Author(s) Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is more common and severe in women compared to men. Both women and men with RA express autoantibodies to post-translationally modified antigens, including citrullinated and homocitrullinated proteins or peptides. These autoantibodies are strongly linked with the HLA-DR4 gene. The objective of this study was to determine sex differences in immune responses to homocitrullinated antigens. We used a humanized animal model of RA, DR4-transgenic mice and immunized them with a homocitrullinated peptide called HomoCitJED. Immune responses in these mice were measured for splenocyte proliferation by tritiated thymidine incorporation, serum autoantibody production by ELISA and …

Reflections On The Evolution Of Smart Polymers, Elizabeth R. Gillies

Bone and Joint Institute

© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim Since Staudinger's recognition that polymers were long chain molecules with covalent bonds between repeating units, the field has evolved tremendously. In addition to their many structural roles, polymers have been developed to exhibit “smart” stimuli-responsive behavior. This article will describe the evolution of selected classes of smart polymers including those responsive to changes in pH, temperature, light, and mechanical stimuli, as well as self-immolative polymers and their application in drug delivery, sensors, and actuators. It will also highlight key advancements in polymer chemistry that enabled rapid progress over the past ∼20 …

Comparison Of Contact Kinematics In Posterior-Stabilized And Cruciate-Retaining Total Knee Arthroplasty At Long-Term Follow-Up, Jordan S. Broberg, Silvio Ndoja, Steven J. Macdonald, Brent A. Lanting, Matthew G. Teeter

Bone and Joint Institute

© 2019 Elsevier Inc. Background: There is controversy regarding the superiority of posterior-stabilizing (PS) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and cruciate-retaining (CR) TKA. Substantial work has made comparisons between PS and CR TKA at follow-ups of less than 5 years. It was the goal of the present study to compare the kinematics at greater than 5 years postoperatively between CR and PS TKA, with a secondary goal of comparing patient function. Methods: A total of 42 knees were investigated, with equal representation in the PS and CR TKA groups. Patients underwent radiostereometric analysis imaging at 0°, 20°, 40°, 60° 80°, and …
