Differences in immune function and responses contribute to health- and life-span disparities between sexes. However, the role of sex in immune system aging is not well understood. Here, we characterize peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 172 healthy adults 22-93 years of age using ATAC-seq, RNA-seq, and flow cytometry. These data reveal a shared epigenomic signature of aging including declining naïve T cell and increasing monocyte and cytotoxic cell functions. These changes are greater in magnitude in men and accompanied by a male-specific decline in B-cell specific loci. Age-related epigenomic changes first spike around late-thirties with similar timing and magnitude between …

Placental Histopathology In Late Preterm Infants: Clinical Implications, Kristina Ericksen, Joshua Fogel, Rita P. Verma
Publications and Research
Background: The etiopathogenesis of late preterm (LPT) birth is undetermined. Placental histopathology, which reflects an adverse intrauterine environment and is reportedly associated with preterm labor and neonatal morbidities, has not been studied in LPT infants.
Purpose: We investigated placental pathological lesion as markers of an adverse intrauterine environment during LPT labor.
Methods: This retrospective case-control study compared placental histopathological and clinical variables between LPT and term neonates. Placental variables included chorioamnionitis, funisitis, hemorrhage, abruption, infarction, calcification, and syncytial knots. Maternal variables included age, substance abuse, pregnancyassociated diabetes mellitus and hypertension, duration of rupture of membrane, antibiotic use, and magnesium sulfate, …

Agglomerative hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) is a commonly used unsupervised machine learning approach for identifying informative natural clusters of observations. HCA is performed by calculating a pairwise dissimilarity matrix and then clustering similar observations until all observations are grouped within a cluster. Verifying the empirical clusters produced by HCA is complex and not well studied in biomedical applications. Here, we demonstrate the comparability of a novel HCA technique with one that was used in previous biomedical applications while applying both techniques to plasma angiogenic (FGF, FLT, PIGF, Tie-2, VEGF, VEGF-D) and inflammatory (MMP1, MMP3, MMP9, IL8, TNFα) protein data to …

Introduction: Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare and biologically aggressive malignancy. The incidence of ACC is between 0.7-2 cases per million, accounting for 0.05-2% of all malignant tumors. Cortisol-producing carcinomas are the most common, with clinical features consistent with hypercortisolism: refractory hypertension, glucose intolerance, and central obesity. We present a case of a 75-year-old male with a cortisol-secreting variant of adrenocortical carcinoma.
Case Description: A 75 year-old male with a prior medical history significant for refractory hypertension on multiple anti-hypertensives including hydrochlorothiazide, type two diabetes mellitus, and untreated obstructive sleep apnea, presented to the emergency department with a blood pressure …

Osteochondroma manifests as a benign tumor that occurs as an abnormal bony development. This tumor is commonly asymptomatic and presents an exophytic outgrowth on bone surfaces, near synovial joints, a condition that invariably induces evident facial deformities. Treatment for this type of tumor usually involves a surgical approach promoting a total or partial resection of the affected anatomical area associated to prosthetic reconstruction of the bone area extracted. We present a case report about a giant mandibular condyle osteochondroma in a 37-year-old female patient. Her treatment involved a total condylectomy without immediate condylar reconstruction, which would be performed in a …

Myasthenic crisis is a life-threatening condition commonly associated with respiratory failure and may present in unusual ways. However, there is paucity in the literature about the cardiac manifestations of myasthenia gravis. We present a case of a 61-year-old male who presented to the emergency room with upper respiratory infection symptoms who soon thereafter suffered sudden cardiac arrest. He was found to have shortened PR interval pre and post arrest onelectrocardiogram (EKG). Only past medical history, discovered post cardiac arrest, was myastenia gravis. All other causes of cardiac arrest were ruled out, and it was deemed to be due to a …

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a prevalent psychiatric disorder characterized by obsessions and compulsions. Studies investigating symptomatology and cognitive deficits in OCD frequently implicate the striatum. The aim of this study was to explore striatum-mediated cognitive deficits in patients with OCD as they complete a stimulus-response learning task previously shown to differentially rely on the dorsal (DS) and ventral striatum (VS). We hypothesized that patients with OCD will show both impaired decision-making and learning, coupled with reduced task-relevant activity in DS and VS, respectively, compared to healthy controls. …

General Surgery
Introduction
Traditional interview selection has several weaknesses limited often to a number, often USMLE/COMLEX that programs use to "weed out" potential residents then look at those who meet the mark. There is no single factor that indicates a good resident, yet we seek to analyze selection criteria from 9 hospitals with general surgery residencies to figure out what selection criteria are present in certain hospitals selection and determine which factors predict acceptance for general surgery residency.
Methods
We looked at 9 hospitals and 411 ranked medical students for general surgery in the 2017-2018 cycle made up of US medical graduates …

Importance: Optimal blood pressure (BP) management in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) slows progression to end-stage renal disease. Studies often base progression risk on a single baseline BP measurement, which may underestimate risk.
Objective: To determine whether time-varying BP measurements are associated with a higher risk of progression of CKD than baseline BP measurements.
Design, Setting, and Participants: The ongoing longitudinal, prospective cohort study Chronic Kidney Disease in Children (CKID) recruited children from January 19, 2005, through March 19, 2014, from pediatric nephrology centers across North America, with data collected at annual study visits. Participants included children aged 1 …

Social interactions are critically important for survival and impact overall-health, but also impose costs on animals, such as exposure to contagious agents. The immune system can play a critical role in modulating social behavior when animals are sick, as has been demonstrated within the context of “sickness behaviors.” Can immune molecules affect or be affected by social interactions even when animals are not sick, therefore serving a role in mediating pathogen exposure? We tested whether markers of immune function in both the blood and the brain are associated with gregariousness, quantified as number of animals interacted with per day. To …

Editor’s note: The new coronavirus has now affected more than 20,000 people in China and claimed more lives as of Feb. 4 than the SARS epidemic from 2002 to 2004. Hong Kong has reported its first death. Some public health officials have said the outbreak is likely to soon be a pandemic, but the World Health Organization said Feb. 4 that it isn’t, yet. Just what is a pandemic anyway? An epidemiologist and public health researcher explains.
