Using The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (Ipec) Core Competencies To Build A Microcredentialing Framework For Interprofessional Curriculum Development, Haley Fribance, Susan Meyer, Phd

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

We are developing a framework to 1) guide the development of a comprehensive interprofessional curriculum and 2) organize learning activities and assessments to enable student achievement of each domain outlined in the IPEC Core Competencies (IPEC, 2016). Within the framework, each of the four IPEC Core Competency domains represents a microcredential that could be earned by a student. An interprofessional curriculum built on a framework of microcredentials will reflect the four characteristics that define quality interprofessional education (IPE)—rationale, outcome-based goals, deliberate design, and assessment and evaluation (Barzansky et al., 2019). The design and implementation of this interprofessional microcredential system will …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Presumptions and implicit biases are unfortunately embedded in human nature. Despite trying to mitigate these instincts, there are moments they unwittingly reappear... unwelcome, but undeniable. In my first year as a pharmacy student, I experienced just that... and through it, I became aware of the pinnacle priority in healthcare - truly seeing the person in front of us.

Developing Interprofessional Preceptors To Promote Intentional Interprofessional Education In Practice Settings: Reflections From The Preceptors In The Nexus Workshop, Sarah Shrader, Pharmd, Bcps, Fccp, Stephen Jernigan, Pt, Phd, Fnap, Brian Sick, Md, Facp

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Demand is increasing for health professional graduates to enter practice ready to function effectively in interprofessional collaborative teams centered on patient care. The World Health Organization (2010) postulated that interprofessional education yields practitioners ready for interprofessional collaborative practice, which in turn is the path to improving our fragmented health system. In 2014, the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) received funding from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation in response to the need to develop interprofessional preceptors (Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, 2013). We define interprofessional preceptors as a preceptor from an professional that intentionally educates learners from different professions in authentic …

Collaboration Is A "Work Of Art", Madeline Neal, Bs, Meg Zomorodi, Phd, Rn, Anef, Faan, Carolyn Allmendinger, Phd, Elizabeth Mankein, Ma

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

The 2019 "Guidance on Developing Quality Interprofessional Education (IPE) for the Health Professions" suggests that intentional IPE should be built with outcomes-based goals, deliberate design, and assessment throughout. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, we created an art-based activity to initiate IPE early in the curriculum, in order to expose students to other professional colleagues, and also to raise awareness of how unintentional biases can be created before class activities begin. For that reason, we designed, implemented, and evaluated an interactive art event during the orientation process for incoming health professional students. In partnership with our colleagues …

Sociology Faculty Research

Community Advisory Boards (CABs) are used in efforts to reduce health disparities; however, there is little documentation in the literature regarding their use in precision medicine research. In this case study, an academic-CAB partnership developed a questionnaire and patient educational materials for two precision smoking cessation interventions that involved use of genetic information. The community-engaged research (CEnR) literature provided a framework for enhancing benefits to CAB members involved in developing research documents for use with a low-income, ethnically diverse population of smokers. The academic partners integrated three CEnR strategies: 1) in-meeting statements acknowledging their desire to learn from community partners, …

Characterization Of A Species E Adenovirus Vector As A Zika Virus Vaccine, Brianna L. Bullard, Brigette N. Corder, David N. Gordon, Theodore C. Pierson, Eric A. Weaver

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The development of a safe and efficacious Zika virus (ZIKV) vaccine remains a global health priority. In our previous work, we developed an Adenovirus vectored ZIKV vaccine using a low-seroprevalent human Adenovirus type 4 (Ad4-prM-E) and compared it to an Ad5 vector (Ad5-prM-E). We found that vaccination with Ad4-prM-E leads to the development of a strong anti-ZIKV T-cell response without eliciting significant anti-ZIKV antibodies, while vaccination with Ad5-prM-E leads to the development of both anti-ZIKV antibody and T-cell responses in C57BL/6 mice. However, both vectors conferred protection against ZIKV infection in a lethal challenge model. Here we continued to characterize …

Leech Me Alone! Atraumatic Hemarthrosis After Hirudotherapy., Janine Curcio, Christopher M Lloyd Feb 2020

Leech Me Alone! Atraumatic Hemarthrosis After Hirudotherapy., Janine Curcio, Christopher M Lloyd

Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles

A 58-year-old male presented to the emergency department with a chief complaint of knee pain and swelling after performing hirudotherapy (leech therapy) approximately one week prior. Knee arthrocentesis demonstrated significant hemarthrosis. Hirudotherapy is being used for a broad array of reasons including treatment of osteoarthritis, to plastic and reconstructive surgery. Case reports and journal articles often discuss cutaneous reactions, bleeding, and infection as common adverse events. Intra-articular bleeding is not commonly mentioned. With hirudotherapy being utilized more as alternative therapy for osteoarthritis and joint pain, physicians should be aware of hemarthrosis as a possible adverse reaction.

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Small-molecule inhibitors of translation are critical tools to study the molecular mechanisms of protein synthesis. In this study, we sought to characterize how QL47, a host-targeted, small-molecule antiviral agent, inhibits steady-state viral protein expression. We demonstrate that this small molecule broadly inhibits both viral and host protein synthesis and targets a translation step specific to eukaryotic cells. We show that QL47 inhibits protein neosynthesis initiated by both canonical cap-driven and noncanonical initiation strategies, most likely by targeting an early step in translation elongation. Our findings thus establish QL47 as a new small-molecule inhibitor that can be utilized to probe the …

Identifying Barriers And Facilitators To Improve Hepatitis C Virus Screening, Linh M. Duong Feb 2020

Identifying Barriers And Facilitators To Improve Hepatitis C Virus Screening, Linh M. Duong

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Background: Birth cohort hepatitis C Virus (HCV) screening recommendations were issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Despite this, studies have reported low HCV screening rates. Currently, the prevalence of HCV screening rates nationally is unknown and there are no in-depth studies that have evaluated the barriers or facilitators of HCV screening. Our study aimed to fill this gap by 1) conducting a systematic literature review to assess the national HCV screening prevalence, 2) evaluating temporal trends in HCV screening using a large academic …
