Care is important for children's growth and development, but lack or inadequacy of resources for care can constrain appropriate caregiving. The objectives of this study were to examine whether maternal resources for care are associated with care behaviours specifically infant and young child feeding, hygiene, health-seeking, and family care behaviours. The study also examined if some resources for care are more important than others. This study used baseline Alive & Thrive household surveys from Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Ethiopia. Measures of resources for care were maternal education, knowledge, height, nourishment, mental well-being, decision-making autonomy, employment, support in chores, and perceived instrumental …

Background & Review of Evidence: Annual flu vaccination has been recommended for everyone over the age of six months (National Foundation for Infectious Disease [NFID], 2016). A low flu vaccination rate among college students living in a residential community poses the risk for spreading a highly-contagious respiratory illness caused by the virus. Students have the ability to spread the disease to everyone around them in their dormitories, classrooms, shared restrooms and via social gatherings (NFID, 2016). College students who contract the flu virus experience approximately eight or more days of the illness (NFID, 2016).

There is a growing interest in the automated analysis of chest X-Ray (CXR) as a sensitive and inexpensive means of screening susceptible populations for pulmonary tuberculosis. In this work we evaluate the latest version of CAD4TB, a commercial software platform designed for this purpose. Version 6 of CAD4TB was released in 2018 and is here tested on a fully independent dataset of 5565 CXR images with GeneXpert (Xpert) sputum test results available (854 Xpert positive subjects). A subset of 500 subjects (50% Xpert positive) was reviewed and annotated by 5 expert observers independently to obtain a radiological reference standard. The …

Digital Pathology is the process of converting histology glass slides to digital images using sophisticated computerized technology to facilitate acquisition, evaluation, storage, and portability of histologic information. By its nature, digitization of analog histology data renders it amenable to analysis using deep learning/artificial intelligence (DL/AI) techniques. The application of DL/AI to digital pathology data holds promise, even if the scope of use cases and regulatory framework for deploying such applications in the clinical environment remains in the early stages. Recent studies using whole-slide images and DL/AI to detect histologic abnormalities in general and cancer in particular have shown encouraging results. …

Abstract
Pulmonary rehabilitation has been proven successful among those with chronic pulmonary diseases. However, there is a low rate of involvement and a lower rate of completion for these patients.
One of the major underlying factors contributing to this problem is patients’ lack of motivation. If the patients can be given information on the benefits of this program that align with what they hold as important there will be increased level of motivation and subsequently completion of pulmonary rehabilitation.

Deconstructing Circadian Disruption: Assessing The Contribution Of Reduced Peripheral Oscillator Amplitude On Obesity And Glucose Intolerance In Mice, Vincent Van Der Vinne, Blanca Martin Burgos, Mary E. Harrington, David R. Weaver
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Disturbing the circadian regulation of physiology by disruption of the rhythmic environment is associated with adverse health outcomes but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Here, the response of central and peripheral circadian clocks to an advance or delay of the light-dark cycle was determined in mice. This identified transient damping of peripheral clocks as a consequence of an advanced light-dark cycle. Similar depression of peripheral rhythm amplitude was observed in mice exposed to repeated phase shifts. To assess the metabolic consequences of such peripheral amplitude depression in isolation, temporally chimeric mice lacking a functional central clock (Vgat-Cre+ Bmal1fl/fl) were housed …

Weight-sharing is one of the pillars behind Convolutional Neural Networks and their successes. However, in physical neural systems such as the brain, weight-sharing is implausible. This discrepancy raises the fundamental question of whether weight-sharing is necessary. If so, to which degree of precision? If not, what are the alternatives? The goal of this study is to investigate these questions, primarily through simulations where the weight-sharing assumption is relaxed. Taking inspiration from neural circuitry, we explore the use of Free Convolutional Networks and neurons with variable connection patterns. Using Free Convolutional Networks, we show that while weight-sharing is a pragmatic optimization …

Molecular Genetics Of Keratinization Disorders - What's New About Ichthyosis, Jouni Uitto, Leila Youssefian, Amir Hossein Saeidian, Hassan Vahidnezhad
Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers
The heritable forms of keratinization disorders, including various forms of ichthyosis and keratodermas, comprise a phenotypically heterogeneous group of diseases which can be divided into syndromic and non-syndromic forms. In the non-syndromic forms, the clinical manifestations are limited to the cutaneous structures while the syndromic ones are associated with a spectrum of extracutaneous manifestations. The inheritance in different families can be autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive or either X-linked dominant or recessive. Currently at least 67 distinct genes have been associated with different forms of ichthyosis. These genes can be grouped on the basis of their physiological involvement, including genes encoding …

Routine screening CT for the identification of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pneumonia is currently not recommended by most radiology societies. However, the number of CT examinations performed in persons under investigation for COVID-19 has increased. We also anticipate that some patients will have incidentally detected findings that could be attributable to COVID-19 pneumonia, requiring radiologists to decide whether or not to mention COVID-19 specifically as a differential diagnostic possibility. We aim to provide guidance to radiologists in reporting CT findings potentially attributable to COVID-19 pneumonia, including standardized language to reduce reporting variability when addressing the possibility of COVID-19. When typical …

Using Non-Pharmacological Interventions To Promote Sleep In The Intensive Care Unit, Regan Kull
Scholars Week
When patients are in critical condition in the ICU, sleep is not prioritized among all of the patients’ other issues. The lack of sleep may result in a decreased immune system and neurocognitive changes producing delirium, potentially increasing the length of stay, and increasing morbidity, especially in older adults and those who have been in the ICU for a long period of time. The purpose of this review of literature is to examine evidence which studied the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions on sleep quality of patients in the ICU. Among the evidence for this project, it was found that the …

Choosing A Vaginal Birth After A Cesarean Rather Than A Repeat Elective Cesarean Delivery, Sydney Carter
Scholars Week
The VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) rate has been increasing over the recent years. However, it is still a much lower rate as compared to 1996. During this time uterine rupture instances and maternal mortality rates were found to have increased. As a result, facilities over corrected and stopped offering VBACs as an option. Current research shows they are actually safer than a cesarean but most facilities do not offer this option. The purpose of this policy change is to increase the rate of VBACs by providing good education to expectant mothers through their nurses.
