A Phenomenological Inquiry Into Vision Loss: Investigating The Lived Experiences Of Adventitiously Blinded Adults, Jennifer Perry
A Phenomenological Inquiry Into Vision Loss: Investigating The Lived Experiences Of Adventitiously Blinded Adults, Jennifer Perry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to share the lived experiences of four adventitiously blinded individuals. The researcher interviewed participants regarding the events surrounding their vision loss. The researcher used a descriptive phenomenological method to analyze the results.
Through analysis, seven themes emerged as essential experiences for experiencing adventitious vision loss: Medical Dysfunction, Others’ Reactions, Ancillary Losses, Rehabilitation, Sensory Enhancements, Benefits of Vision Loss, and Participants’ Advice.
The study indicated that participants’ experiences are influenced by how others in society understand blindness. Suggestions included providing a greater awareness to the public for blindness, its effects, and its available rehabilitation options.

An Examination Between Neighborhood Characteristics And Alzheimer’S Disease And Related Dementias And Caregiver Mental Health In South Carolina, Dana Mahmoud Alhasan
Theses and Dissertations
Research has examined the relationship between neighborhood environments and cognitive decline, yet few have investigated the role of neighborhood characteristics specifically on incident Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), on severity of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) including neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), and on caregiver mental health including depressive symptoms. This dissertation aimed to 1) ecologically examine the geographic distribution of ADRD and investigate ecologic associations between census-tract neighborhood characteristics and diagnosed ADRD case incidence from 2010-2014 in the South Carolina (SC) Alzheimer’s Disease Registry; 2) estimate the cross-sectional association between neighborhood characteristics and NPS among those with AD in 2010 in SC; …
Comparison Of Comprehensive Health Score In North American Housed Giraffe And Free-Ranging Giraffe From South Africa, Haley Beer
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Stress is evident in many animal species and has been correlated to disease prevalence. During stressful events, allostasis is initiated by physiologic systems to maintain or reestablish homeostasis to protect an organism’s viability. Over time, the acclimation to frequent stress causes systematic dysregulation, leading to the phenomena of increased allostatic load. Allostatic load has been assessed in animal species via serum through selection of representative, multi-system biomarker indices. Perception and number of stress events may impact dysregulation severity, yielding allostatic load as a predictive tool. However, the allostatic load methodology poses application limitations to individuals without historical data and those …
Contraceptive Education In South Carolina Women's Jails, Sarah B. Johnson
Contraceptive Education In South Carolina Women's Jails, Sarah B. Johnson
Senior Theses
Women in jail, which is currently a growing population, are at risk of unplanned pregnancy due to their potential exposure to alcohol and drug use, history of living in an abusive environment, and potential practice of prostitution(Clarke et al., 2012; Clarke et al., 2006; Kelly, 2012). The majority of female inmates are between the ages of 17-30, the peak reproductive age, which increases the importance of jails providing education to improve inmates’ reproductive health (Hale et al., 2009). Many females arrested will be released from jail back into society, making jails an opportune place to provide information to improve the …
The Impact Of Financial Incentives On Urban-Rural Disparities In Dental Supply: Evidence From Thailand, Rakchanok Noochpoung
The Impact Of Financial Incentives On Urban-Rural Disparities In Dental Supply: Evidence From Thailand, Rakchanok Noochpoung
Theses and Dissertations
Financial incentive is one of the common strategies used to attract healthcare workers in rural and remote areas. Both high-income and low-income countries extensively use financial strategy to tackle the disparity distribution of healthcare workers. However, most studies were conducted in developed countries and assessed positive incentives programs. Previous studies showed the effectiveness of financial incentives on recruitment and retention of healthcare workers. Current studies show that most of the financial incentives supported for education such as scholarships and loan repayment programs are effective. A few studies assessed the effectiveness of direct payment incentive programs, especially in low-middle income countries. …
The Impact Of Psychosocial, Clinical, And Neighborhood Factors On Inflammatory Outcomes Among African American Women, Malcolm Seth Bevel
The Impact Of Psychosocial, Clinical, And Neighborhood Factors On Inflammatory Outcomes Among African American Women, Malcolm Seth Bevel
Theses and Dissertations
Inflammatory-related chronic diseases are disparagingly prevalent among African Americans in the United States, particularly in the Southeastern region. Access to community gardens shows promise in mitigating chronic disease outcomes, despite multiple barriers to physical activity and diet among underserved populations. We seek to determine if psychosocial or clinical factors mediate the association between the treatment effect of a healthy lifestyle intervention and inflammatory biomarker levels among African American women, respectively. We also seek to analyze the relationship between residing in a food desert/swamp and inflammatory biomarker levels, while gaining a qualitative perspective about community garden access among African American women. …

Bilingualism/Multilingualism To Protect Against Cognitive Decline In Alzheimer’S Disease And Other Forms Of Dementia: A Systematic Review, Kirsten L. May
Honors Thesis
Given a growing incidence of Alzheimer’s disease and lack of treatments, prevention is a popular topic in both research literature (Angevaren et al., 2008; Orrell & Sahakian, 1995) and in news articles (Iacono et al., 2009). A cognitive reserve is a skill that improves cognitive functioning in executive controls. Bilingualism is believed to be a practice that increases cognitive reserve, which could delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
The purpose of this project was to analyze the possibility that bilingualism or multilingualism could create a cognitive reserve to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related diseases. This systematic …

Utilization of a bellyboard device reduces small bowel dose for patients receiving radiation therapy for rectal cancer. The reduction of small bowel dose with the bellyboard is even more significant in intensity modulated radiation therapy rectal treatments, as opposed to conventional 3D treatments. However, there is evidence of increased setup variation with prone bellyboard positioning, especially in pitch and roll. The purpose of this study is to determine the margin needed between the clinical target volume and the planning target volume to adequately account for these setup variations when planning volumetric modulated arc therapy rectal cases utilizing the bellyboard device. …
Potential Role Of The Large Protein Titin In The Development Of Heart Failure, Mary M. Prickett
Potential Role Of The Large Protein Titin In The Development Of Heart Failure, Mary M. Prickett
Senior Theses
I will be exploring the impact of the large protein Titin on heart failure with a preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). It was hypothesized that myocardial Titin plays a significant role in the progression of HFpEF through isoform, N2BA and N2B, changes. It was hypothesized that an increase in the quantity of N2B Titin, less compliant, and a decrease in N2BA Titin, more compliant, will be observed as HF progresses, contributing to an increase in passive stiffness involved in heart contraction. I will cover a detailed report on the role of Titin in HFpEF and propose research methods to explore further.

Analysis Of The Year 2 Questionnaire: Predictions Of Increased Burnout Raise Concern For The Health Of Medical Students, Marco C. Garcia
Senior Theses
Well-being of medical doctors is essential for physicians, the healthcare environment, and treatment of patients. Unfortunately, burnout in this demanding profession has become a prevalent issue. This psychological phenomenon presents as three components: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. Burnout can diminish professionalism and health care quality, promote medical error, and contribute negatively to physician’s personal lives. Past studies implicate that burnout in physicians is most likely rooted before they even start practicing medicine. Specifically, feelings of burnout start appearing while they are in medical school.
This project explores this proposition via statistical analyzation of the relatively new Year …

The Effect Of Hay Net Use On Cribbing Horses, Lauren Wesolowski
The Effect Of Hay Net Use On Cribbing Horses, Lauren Wesolowski
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
Cribbing is a stereotypic behavior observed in horses, wherein the animal grasps a solid object with its front incisors and contracts its neck muscles to suck in air through its mouth, resulting in an audible grunt. Stereotypic behaviors such as cribbing are thought to be done in response to stress or insufficient stimulus in an animal’s living environment. Slow feeding hay nets can increase the amount of time horses spend eating daily hay rations. This research aims to use slow feeding hay nets to create a feeding process that is closer to natural grazing behavior and provide more stimulation for …

Genetic research has revealed pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) to be a fundamental regulator of energy balance and body weight in mammals. Within the brain, POMC is primarily expressed in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ARC), while a smaller population exists in the brainstem nucleus of the solitary tract (POMCNTS). We performed a neurochemical characterization of this understudied population of POMC cells using transgenic mice expressing green fluorescent protein (eGFP) under the control of a POMC promoter/enhancer (PomceGFP). Expression of endogenous Pomc mRNA in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) PomceGFP cells was confirmed using fluorescence-activating cell sorting (FACS) followed by …
