Influence Of Progressive Vs. Minimal Canal Preparations On The Fracture Resistance Of Mandibular Molars: A Finite Element Analysis, Michael Smoljan
Influence Of Progressive Vs. Minimal Canal Preparations On The Fracture Resistance Of Mandibular Molars: A Finite Element Analysis, Michael Smoljan
Master's Theses (2009 -)
INTRODUCTION: Several file systems have been recently introduced with the objective of preserving coronal dentin. There is limited research comparing the role of canal shaping on preservation of pericervical dentin and its role in fracture resistance. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of minimal canal taper on residual tooth strength and stress distribution after root canal treatment. Methods: Two pre-accessed mandibular molar TruTeeth (Acadental Endo 3DP, Lenexa, KS) were subject to simulated endodontic treatment in this study. One tooth was instrumented with ProTaper Gold (Dentsply, Tulsa, OK) to F2 (25/0.08v progressive taper) in the mesial canals …

Adverse Maternal Environment And Western Diet Impairs Cognitive Function And Alters Hippocampal Glucocorticoid Receptor Promoter Methylation In Male Mice., Xingrao Ke, Qi Fu, Jennifer Sterrett, Cecilia J. Hillard, Robert H. Lane, Amber Majnik
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Adverse maternal environment (AME) and high-fat diet in early childhood increase the risk of cognitive impairment and depression later in life. Cognitive impairment associates with hippocampal dysfunction. A key regulator of hippocampal function is the glucocorticoid receptor. Increased hippocampal GR expression associates with cognitive impairment and depression. Transcriptional control of GR relies in part upon the DNA methylation status at multiple alternative initiation sites that are tissue specific, with exon 1.7 being hippocampal specific. Increased exon 1.7 expression associates with upregulated hippocampal GR expression in early life stress animal models. However, the effects of AME combined with postweaning western diet …

Passive activation of endodontic irrigants provides improved canal disinfection, smear layer removal, and better subsequent sealing. Although evidence suggests that passive activating endodontic devices increase the effectiveness of irrigation, no study exists to quantitatively compare and validate vibrational characteristics and cavitation produced by different ultrasonic endodontic devices. The current study aims to compare the efficiency of various commercially available ultrasonic endodontic activating devices (i.e., EndoUltra™, EndoChuck, Irrisafe™, and PiezoFlow®). The passive endodontic activating devices were characterized in terms of tip displacement and cavitation performance using scanning laser vibrometry (SLV) and sonochemical analysis, respectively. The obtained results showed that …

Anaesthetic Management For Hiatal Hernia Repair In A Child With Bartter's Syndrome: A Case Report, Durriya Raza, Fauzia Khan
Department of Anaesthesia
Bartter syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by reduced sodium chloride transport in the distal nephrons of the kidney. Its clinical features are renal salt wasting, hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis, elevated renin and aldosterone levels with normal or low blood pressure, polyuria, hypercalciuria and malnutrition. The pathophysiologic and biochemical changes in these patients should be kept in mind when considering anaesthetic management. This case report describes our management in a nineteen months old, 3.6 kg weight male child with Bartter's syndrome who underwent elective repair of hiatal hernia and gastrostomy.

Limiting the spread of the coronavirus by social-distancing has eclipsed nearly all normal daily activities and routines. Healthcare services for those with COVID-19 and protection of vulnerable populations have escalated exponentially. State and local governments are mandating closure of non-essential businesses while classifying operations of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies as essential. Education of students at all levels is, for the most part, virtual across the U.S.

In females, endogenous estrogen secretion increases gradually before pubertal development. The benefits of low-dose estrogen therapy in patients with Turner syndrome were originally discussed by Ross et al. and Quigley et al. These seminal studies used ethinyl estradiol (EE2), starting at a dose of 25 ng/kg/d. We hypothesized that the initial dosage of estrogen could be titrated to more closely mimic physiological increments of endogenous estrogen. Therefore, our recent study initiated EE2 treatment at a dosage of 1-2 ng/kg/d, an ultra-low-dose estrogen therapy in pediatric patients with Turner syndrome. The ultra-low-dose estrogen therapy in this syndrome produced a good …

Submaximal Isometric Force Steadiness In People With Multiple Sclerosis Under Single And Dual Task Conditions, Sheri Bunyan
Submaximal Isometric Force Steadiness In People With Multiple Sclerosis Under Single And Dual Task Conditions, Sheri Bunyan
Dissertations (1934 -)
Activities of daily living require steady, non-fatiguing, isometric muscular contractions to maintain postural control and stabilize body segments to facilitate interaction with the environment. Furthermore, typical activities often require simultaneous performance of cognitive and motor tasks. This may challenge people with multiple sclerosis, a chronic neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system associated with motor and cognitive impairments. Despite functional relevance, isometric force steadiness in both the upper and lower extremities has not been explored in this population. Additionally, dual task experiments in multiple sclerosis have primarily used gait, a dynamic activity, as the motor task. Thus, the purpose of …
Design, Development And Evaluation Of Dual Drug Nanomedicine For Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Elham Hatami
Design, Development And Evaluation Of Dual Drug Nanomedicine For Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, Elham Hatami
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Resistance to conventional chemotherapy is a big challenge in the treatment of cancer including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A combination of natural chemo sensitizer agents with chemotherapy offers unique advantages over monotherapy alone. However, free unbound drugs, (in combination or as a single agent), lack tumor-targeted accumulation and therefore can be easily eliminated from the patient body. Moreover, some drugs are hydrophobic, and their organic solvents cause in vivo toxicity, thereby limiting their capability in clinical translation. Herein, dual loaded biocompatible and biodegradable nanoparticles (NPs) using Gemcitabine (Gem)a pyrimidine nucleoside antimetabolite and Gambogic acid (GA) (a highly hydrophobic chemo …

Telemedicine And Malpractice: Creating Uniformity At The National Level, Tyler D. Wolf
William & Mary Law Review
Picture this: an elderly gentleman living alone, isolated in a rural, midwestern locale. One day, this elderly gentleman awakes to find a distinct rash forming on his chest. The nearest doctor capable of performing an examination is located over a hundred miles away, and this man has not driven more than ten miles in twenty years. Shambling into his living room, the elderly man logs onto his computer and begins typing. Within twenty minutes he is videoconferencing with a doctor who examines the rash remotely and makes a diagnosis.
Through advances in telemedicine, the scenario described above is becoming an …

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of nursing guidelines on coping of infertile couples' undergoing In Vitro Fertilization. Methods: A quasi-experimental research design was utilized to achieve the aim of this study. This study conducted at the assisted reproductive technology …
Unraveling Molecular Mechanisms Underlying The Development Of Unconventional T Cells, Daniel Eduardo Bastardo Blanco
Unraveling Molecular Mechanisms Underlying The Development Of Unconventional T Cells, Daniel Eduardo Bastardo Blanco
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
The thymus supports and guides the generation of a diverse repertoire of mature T cells from precursors derived from the bone marrow. In addition to conventional CD4 and CD8 T cells, innate-like T cells also develop in the thymus and share features of the adaptive and the innate immune system. These ‘unconventional’ T cells have emerging roles in tissue homeostasis and disease, but the molecular mechanisms underpinning their development remain elusive. In this study, we uncovered the roles of the molecules RAPTOR and PTEN in the thymic development of unconventional T cells. Capitalizing on genetic deletion of RAPTOR, we found …
Associations Between County-Level Socioeconomic Status And Opioid Overdose Rates In Northern New England, Samuel Godfrey
Associations Between County-Level Socioeconomic Status And Opioid Overdose Rates In Northern New England, Samuel Godfrey
Theses and Dissertations
Background – The opioid epidemic persists as a significant concern to public health as the proliferation of fentanyl presents additional risks for illicit opioid users. States such as Maine and New Hampshire experience far greater opioid overdose rates compared to the overall US opioid overdose rate. Many studies on the opioid epidemic use socioeconomic and macroeconomic factors individually but few use a composite index of multiple of these measures. Limited attention has been paid to the need for a composite index of socioeconomic status at the small area (county) level designed to quantify the impact of socioeconomic status on the …

Background and aims: Sulfur-metabolizing microbes, which convert dietary sources of sulfur into genotoxic hydrogen sulfide (H2S), have been associated with development of colorectal cancer (CRC). We identified a dietary pattern associated with sulfur-metabolizing bacteria in stool and then investigated its association with risk of incident CRC using data from a large prospective study of men.
Methods: We collected data from 51,529 men enrolled in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study since 1986 to determine the association between sulfur-metabolizing bacteria in stool and risk of CRC over 26 years of follow-up. First, in a subcohort of 307 healthy men, we …

Intracellular iron concentration is tightly regulated to maintain cell viability. Iron plays important roles in electron transport, nucleic acid synthesis, and oxidative stress. A Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP)-specific genomic island carries a putative metal transport operon that includes MAP3773c, which encodes a Fur-like protein. Although well characterized as a global regulator of iron homeostasis in multiple bacteria, the function of Fur (ferric uptake regulator) in MAP is unknown as this organism also carries IdeR (iron dependent regulator), a native iron regulatory protein specific to mycobacteria. Computational analysis using PRODORIC identified 23 different pathways involved in respiration, metabolism, and virulence …
Collective Effect Of Landfills And Landscape Composition On Bird–Aircraft Collisions, Morgan Pfeiffer, Bradley F. Blackwell, Travis L. Devault
Collective Effect Of Landfills And Landscape Composition On Bird–Aircraft Collisions, Morgan Pfeiffer, Bradley F. Blackwell, Travis L. Devault
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Ninety-three percent of all reported bird strikes occur below 1,067 m, which based on the typical approach and departure angles of aircraft is within 8–13 km of an airport. Concomitantly, the Federal Aviation Administration and the International Civil Aviation Organization recommend that any feature that would attract hazardous wildlife to the approach and departure airspace be restricted. Thus, preventing the establishment of wildlife attractants, such as municipal solid waste landfills (MSWLFs) within 8 km or 13 km extents (U.S. and international recommendations, respectively) of airports, has been recommended to mitigate the risk of bird–aircraft collisions (strikes). However, robust evidence linking …
