Language Regard In Michigan’S Upper Peninsula: Perceptual Dialectology Through The Mental Maps Of Nonlinguists, Karissa Mcfarlane Apr 2020

Language Regard In Michigan’S Upper Peninsula: Perceptual Dialectology Through The Mental Maps Of Nonlinguists, Karissa Mcfarlane

Student Scholars Day Posters

As a geographic region and speech community, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (UP) is well positioned to examine language regard using hand-drawn mental maps to determine how the general population perceives dialect differences inside and outside their community. The present study examines the geographic distribution of perceived Finnish-ness, Yooper-ness, and Canadian-ness categories across the UP. This 92-participant study, stratified by four UP counties, reveals that perceived Finnish-ness and Yooper-ness are focused on the UP’s northwestern regions, while Canadian-ness shows variation loosely focused on the eastern UP.

Improving Palliative Care Utilization Process: An Effort To Enhance Providers` Contribution, Orina Machoka

Nursing Capstones

Worldwide, an estimated 20 million people require palliative care. The Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance has identified the need for palliative care has never been higher and is increasing at a rapid rate due to the world`s aging population, increase in cancer, and noncommunicable disease. Despite the increased need, the palliative care establishment has not been efficient in identifying patients who need palliative care. The use of a standardized screening process to assist in the timely identification of patients with palliative care needs is lacking, or in some cases, non-existent. At a Midwestern pain clinic lack of screening is causing a …

Primary Care And Behavioral Health Provider Communication: Strategy For Improvement, Kathleen J. Matthews Apr 2020

Primary Care And Behavioral Health Provider Communication: Strategy For Improvement, Kathleen J. Matthews

Nursing Capstones

Communication in health care is essential. Limited communication between primary care and behavioral health providers was identified as a barrier access to care and effective collaborative care of patients seeking behavioral health treatment in the Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Borough, Alaska. A one-group pre- and post-test design quality improvement project was created to develop and implement a standardized communication template to facilitate communication and collaboration between behavioral health and primary care providers in the project group. The theory of relational coordination with an emphasis on the mutually reinforcing interaction between relationships and communication served as the theoretical framework for the project. Objectives …

The Ends Of Medicine And The Experience Of Patients, D. Robert Macdougall Apr 2020

The Ends Of Medicine And The Experience Of Patients, D. Robert Macdougall

Publications and Research

The ends of medicine are sometimes construed simply as promotion of health, treatment and prevention of disease, and alleviation of pain. Practitioners might agree that this simple formulation captures much of what medical practice is about. But while the ends of medicine may seem simple or even obvious, the essays in this issue demonstrate the wide variety of philosophical questions and issues associated with the ends of medicine. They raise questions about how to characterize terms like “health” and “disease”; whether medicine’s goals should be extended to include enhancement beyond normal human function; and whether the ends of medicine are …

Skin Lightening Treatments: A Review On The Effect Of Intravenous Glutathione In The Disease States Of Women, Buhle Mthombeni

Senior Honors Theses

The skin bleaching industry is a global business with a vast array of anti-melanogenic choices including glutathione. Glutathione is synthesized in vivo but has been used as a bodily supplement by medical personnel to aid in preventative medicine. Known for its antioxidant properties, glutathione has been used for its anti-melanogenic effects. Intravenous glutathione requires more investigation to determine its safety for usage. It continues to be distributed to the cosmetic industry despite antagonism from the Philippine FDA. This study will research the potential effects of intravenous glutathione on women and it will propose the biochemical mechanisms of glutathione in induced …

A Literature Review On Intermittent Fasting, Kylie Carrero

Senior Honors Theses

Intermittent fasting has been instructed in the Bible as an implied part of daily living. This paper has reviewed the physical benefits of intermittent fasting. In healthy test subjects, it has led to higher levels of autophagy, gut health, and lifespan. In non-healthy test subjects, it has proven beneficial in cancer treatment, as well as in protection against and/or attenuation of the effects of neurodegeneration, metabolic disorders, and cardiovascular diseases. The possible mechanisms underlying these benefits have been discussed in this review.

Talking Trash In The Big Apple: Mitigating Bird Strikes Near The North Shore Marine Transfer Station, Stephan J. Beffre, Brian E. Washburn Apr 2020

Talking Trash In The Big Apple: Mitigating Bird Strikes Near The North Shore Marine Transfer Station, Stephan J. Beffre, Brian E. Washburn

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Anthropogenic activities that concentrate wildlife near airports increases the risk of wildlife–aircraft collisions. Placing waste management facilities, natural areas, golf courses, and other landscape features near airports have the potential to attract wildlife hazardous to aviation. We conducted a 3-year study (March 2013–February 2016) to determine if the implementation of a Wildlife Hazard Mitigation Program (WHMP) would influence the bird use of a waste transfer station located near LaGuardia Airport, New York City, New York, USA. We conducted wildlife surveys during 3 phases: (1) no mitigation program and no waste transfer station, (2) active mitigation and no waste transfer station, …

The Experimental Effects Of Acute Exercise Intensity On Retrieval-Induced Forgetting, Joshua Franklin Apr 2020

The Experimental Effects Of Acute Exercise Intensity On Retrieval-Induced Forgetting, Joshua Franklin

Honors Theses

Accumulating research has shown that acute exercise can enhance memory function. Although counterintuitive, acute exercise may also facilitate aspects of forgetting. Specifically, retrieving a subset of items from memory can facilitate the retention of retrieved items (retrieval practice; RP) and inhibit the subsequent retrieval of non-retrieved items (retrieval-induced forgetting; RIF). Given that acute exercise has been shown to enhance cognition-related inhibition, acute exercise may facilitate RIF. A sample of 225 young adults completed either a control (N=75), moderate-intensity acute exercise (N=75), or vigorous-intensity acute exercise session (N=75). Both acute exercise sessions lasted 20 minutes. Participants then completed a standard retrieval-induced …

How Does The Social World Shape The Experience Of A Rare Disease? Social Position And The Development, Progression, And Medical Care For People With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Jennifer A. Andersen

Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation focuses on the implications of social position and life course on the experience of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Using a sociology in medicine frame, I test three theoretical perspectives (fundamental cause theory, social determinants of health, and life course theory) to determine the influence of social conditions on the development and progression of, and medical care for, people with ALS (pALS). Further, I use ALS as an exemplar of the need for a sociology of disease.

Using the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis National Registry, I first assess the association of social position with the reported onset location at the …

The Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) are the socioeconomic conditions that shape a person’s life and can include an individual’s housing situation, economic opportunities, ability to obtain food, access to transportation and healthcare, level of education, and exposure to discrimination and violence. When people struggle with these socioeconomic aspects of their lives, their health will be negatively impacted as a consequence. In this study, the SDOH of patients were evaluated at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Nebraska Medicine through the use of a survey about socioeconomic needs, and the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) of each participating patient was …
