Dentistry’S Supporting Role For Cancer Patients, Christopher J. Smiley
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Cancer diagnosis overwhelms patients and caregivers. As the spouse of a patient with leukemia who received bone marrow transplant therapy, I share insights into the challenges these patients face. Oral healthcare professionals play a vital role during these trials. Dental teams, often at the oncology's behest, conduct comprehensive exams and treatments before cancer therapy starts. Providing timely and efficient dental care is essential to achieve clearance to proceed with cancer therapy. Dental infections can be catastrophic for these patients who may be immune compromised. Untreated oral issues could lead to hospitalization, jeopardizing treatment schedules. Advocating for patients' financial needs, often …

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2017) reports that approximately 30 million people in the United States (US) have diabetes. Approximately 8 million have diabetes retinopathy (DR) (CDC, 2018). DR is the leading cause of vision impairment in type 2 diabetes patients. Left untreated, DR can result in loss of vision and blindness (Hernández, Simó-Servat, Bogdanov, & Simó, 2017). The US spends approximately $500 million dollars annually in the treatment of diabetes-related blindness (CDC, n.d.). Early detection and management of DR through tight glycemic control, aggressive blood pressure and lipid management is essential to preventing complications of the …
Self-Monitoring Of Blood Pressure In Community – Dwelling Senior Adults, Laura N. Love
Self-Monitoring Of Blood Pressure In Community – Dwelling Senior Adults, Laura N. Love
Doctoral Projects
Unregulated hypertension is a public health concern. Hypertension is a chronic disease affecting adults across the lifespan. Although hypertension is easy to diagnose and treat, rates of blood pressure control continue to be low (AHA, 2017). Because of this, it is imperative to employ novel strategies for blood pressure control; especially in high risk populations. The purpose of this evidence-based, project was to determine whether self-monitoring of blood pressure (SMBP) improves knowledge about hypertension, while also increasing the frequency of SMBP. Another outcome of interest was a reduction in mean systolic blood pressure for the cohort. The project enrolled participants …

Process Improvement To Improve Quality Measures In A Rural Primary Care Clinic, Lucille Yurko Vanderwoude
Doctoral Projects
Health disparities are differences in health that increase the amount of sickness in certain parts of the population, these inequalities in health are directly influenced by social, economic and environmental status (Healthy People 2020, 2008). Individuals living in poverty, violence, or disability have less opportunity for good healthcare and often have higher rates of chronic disease. Rural geographic locations additionally fall under this category (Healthy People 2020, 2008). These disparities can result from decreased exercise, violence in living situations, and unhealthy diet choices or options (CDC, 2018). Research has shown that health disparities increase with a reduction of individual’s income …

The Effect Of The Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral To Treatment (Sbirt) Model On Adult Depression In An Outpatient Setting, Genevieve E. Sweeney
Doctoral Projects
Depression is one of the most common chronic conditions in the world. Despite this, depression continues to be under-screened, inaccurately assessed and diagnosed, and poorly treated in outpatient settings. Many providers solely rely on clinical judgement instead of a screening tool or evidence-based toolkit when a patient presents with depression symptoms, resulting in underdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. Utilization of resources can help a provider appropriately screen, diagnose and treat an individual with depression. Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based model intended to improve these measures. Studies from the literature support the efficacy of the SBIRT model …

Olfactory cues play an important role in mammalian biology, but have been challenging to assess in the field. Current methods pose problematic issues with sample storage and transportation, limiting our ability to connect chemical variation in scents with relevant ecological and behavioral contexts. Real-time, in-field analysis via portable gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has the potential to overcome these issues, but with trade-offs of reduced sensitivity and compound mass range. We field-tested the ability of portable GC-MS to support two representative applications of chemical ecology research with a wild arboreal primate, common marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus). We developed methods …

Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Faculty Publications
Background: The merits of a double-row rotator cuff repair (RCR) construct are well-established for restoration of the footprint and lateral-row security. The theoretical benefit of leaving the medial row untied is to prevent damage to the rotator cuff by tissue strangulation, and the benefit of suture tape is a more even distribution of force across the repair site. These benefits, to our knowledge, have not been evaluated in the laboratory.
Hypothesis: Leaving the medial row untied and using a suture bridge technique with suture tape will offer more even pressure distribution across the repair site without compromising total contact force. …

Pediatrics Faculty Publications
Drug abuse and addiction have significantly increased over the last few decades; specifically, opioid abuse and dependence have increased to epidemic proportions. This increased use of drugs includes women of childbearing age and those who are pregnant. Drug abuse during pregnancy is a serious health risk for both mother and newborn infant. Infants exposed to maternal drugs in fetal life develop signs of drug withdrawal during early neonatal life. This group of withdrawal signs is known as neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Although NAS is not a fatal condition, it results in significant illness and prolonged hospitalization.

Vaccines are one of the world’s most impactful medical therapies. They are cost-effective, successfully proven, and one of the quickest treatment options available today (Clark et al., 2016). They save millions of lives every year and have eliminated certain diseases on a national and international level. However, millions of people worldwide still remain unvaccinated. In developed nations, mainly The United States (U.S.) and the European countries, many of the unvaccinated are a result of rising vaccine hesitancy of parents in conjunction with the anti-vaccination movement. Vaccine hesitancy is defined as “a delay in acceptance or refusal of vaccines despite availability” …
