Novel Therapeutic Approaches To Treat Brain Cancer Combining Cold Atmospheric Plasma, Therapeutic Prodrugs And Gold Nanoparticles, Zhonglei He
Doctoral
Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) makes up approximately 45% of all primary brain tumours. State of the art treatment at present involves concurrent and adjuvant temozolomide (TMZ) with radical radiotherapy which extends median survival from 12.1 months (radical radiotherapy alone) to 14.6 months according to the study of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Brain Tumour and Radiotherapy Groups and the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) Clinical Trials Group. Meanwhile, National Cancer Registry Ireland presented that GBM represents over 40% of all malignant brain tumours and had the worst five-year net survival (4%) compared to overall malignant …

Evaluating The Association Between Vasopressin Use And In-Hospital Mortality In Patients With Septic Shock, Michael Pasqualicchio, Heidi Clarke, Jonathan Kline, Payal Patel
All Publications
Purpose/Background: The Surviving Sepsis Campaign recommends norepinephrine as the first-line vasopressor in patients with septic shock to maintain a mean arterial pressure (MAP) of at least 65 mmHg. The guideline also makes a weak recommendation (2B) to use vasopressin as an adjuvant therapy to raise MAP to goal or to reduce the norepinephrine rate required to maintain the goal MAP. The recommendation is based on conflicting results of the VASST trial that showed no significant difference in 28-day all-cause mortality between patients managed with norepinephrine alone compared to norepinephrine and vasopressin. However, in subgroup analysis, the VASST trial showed mortality …

Iatrophobia: How It Impacts Health, Jessica Newbury
Senior Honors Projects
According to Mara Hollander (2019), iatrophobia is “the fear of doctors, medical care, or the medical care system." The most severe cases of this fear only affect a small percentage of the population; however, many people, for a variety of reasons, reported that they disliked or felt uncomfortable seeking medical care. An anonymous survey was created and distributed to males and females between the ages of 18 to 75 to retrieve self-reported data regarding specific questions about doctor's visits and the healthcare system. The total sample consisted of 379 participants who voluntarily completed the assessment. Quantitative data was collected using …

The Need For Change In Emergency Medical Approach When Caring For Individuals With Autism, Hannah Watkins
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
This paper highlights the need for policy changes and additional training related to caring for individuals with autism in emergency situations. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder are at risk of receiving inadequate care due to the challenges that come with such a complex diagnosis. Depending on the severity of autism for each individual, behavioral outbursts and aggression can often occur due to the overwhelming amount of stimulation in the emergency department environment. While medical professionals have the potential to be a great help during times of crisis, there is often very little training given to providers in regard to delivering …

We present a 61-year-old male with FLT3-mutated acute myeloid leukemia treated with midostaurin who developed acute kidney injury requiring hemodialysis and pulmonary renal syndrome. Antibodies to proteinase-3, myeloperoxidase, and glomerular basement membrane were negative. Renal biopsy confirmed acute pauci-immune focal necrotizing glomerulonephritis (GN) with fibrin crescents indicating rapidly progressing glomerulonephritis. He improved with pulse methylprednisolone, intravenous cyclophosphamide, and plasma exchange with resolution of hemoptysis. This case highlights the importance of prompt renal biopsy to guide early initiation of life-saving therapies. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of ANCA-negative pauci-immune necrotizing GN likely secondary to midostaurin.

Psychology
Life is filled with experiences that contribute to who we are, who we will become, and the social connections we make. We are constantly reflecting on past experiences, be it alone or with others, as well as thinking about what is to come and where we see ourselves in the future. Social and cognitive psychology research has focused on the processes behind autobiographical memory and episodic simulation. The link between collective memory and episodic simulation is the focus of the present study. The specific aim is to explore the potential link between reflecting on past experiences and imagining the future …

Neurological Manifestations Of Covid-19, Dureshahwar Kanwar, Abdul Mannan Baig, Mohammad Wasay
Section of Neurology
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV-2) has turned out to be a formidable pandemic. Upcoming evidence from confirmed cases of COVID-19 suggests an anticipated incursion of patients with neurological manifestations in the weeks to come. An expression of the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE 2), the cellular receptor for SARS-CoV-2 over the glial cells and neurons have made the brain a potential target. Neurotoxicity may occur as a result of direct, indirect and post-infectious complications. Attention to neurological deficits in COVID-19 is fundamental to ensure appropriate, timely, beneficial management of the affected patients. Most …

Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine if differences in vertical ground reaction forces (vGRFs) exist between single-leg take-off approaches (SL) and double-leg take-off approaches (DL) and if sex or positional differences existed in vGRFs in SL- or DL-style approaches. It was hypothesized that DL jumps would generate greater vGRFs, males would generate greater vGRFs in both styles, and middle blockers would have higher SL vGRFs while pin hitters would have higher DL vGRFs. Nine collegiate volleyball players (4 female; 5 male) (age: 20.44 ± 1.42 years; height: 186.02 ± 6.44 cm; body mass: 78.21 ± 10.63kg; body fat: …
How Positive And Negative Affect Relate To Postoperative Pain In Children Undergoing Surgery, Stephanie Munduruca, Ryan Johnson
How Positive And Negative Affect Relate To Postoperative Pain In Children Undergoing Surgery, Stephanie Munduruca, Ryan Johnson
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Positive affect has been shown to be associated with lower levels of postoperative pain, while negative affect is associated with higher levels of pain. More recent research asks if subscales of positive affect such as calm, well-being, and vigor could be related to pain experiences. Studies of postoperative pain in children relating to positive and negative affect are limited, with none examining the connection between positive affect subscales and negative affect subscales (anger, anxiety, and depression) and children’s pain. This study addresses that gap by uncovering the relationships between the aforementioned subscales to postoperative pain in children. This study was …

Research on the application of 3D-printed models in human medicine is extensive, but it is relatively new for veterinary medicine. With the increased numbers of certified veterinary radiologists and animal imaging facilities, best practices in 3D model design and printing can be explored. This project was two-fold. First, an encompassing literature review was generated, outlining the development and uses of computer-generated 3D models in connection to their applications in veterinary medicine. Accurate renderings of an animal’s anatomy can be used to train new students, educate clients on their pets’ needs, and guide veterinarian surgical approaches. Several different cases were explored …

Mode Of Delivery And Infant Cognitive Development, Madison Olson, Laura M. Glynn
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The rate of nonindicated cesarean births is increasing each year within the United States. Although cesarean delivery can function as a life- saving intervention, emerging evidence suggests that it may also be associated with deleterious developmental consequences for the child. Here we test the hypothesis that mode of delivery is associated with cognitive development during infancy. 229 pregnant women were recruited and their infants’ cognitive development was assessed at 6, 12 and 24 months with the Bayley Scales of Infant Development. Medical charts were reviewed by obstetric nurses to determine prenatal medical risk and birth outcomes, including mode of delivery. …

Over 85% of children experience postoperative pain. If poorly treated, pediatric postoperative pain may lead to various negative health outcomes. Adult behaviors may be associated with child experiences in the postoperative environment. For example, adult behaviors such as distraction, humor, and coping advice divert a child’s attention away from their pain and thus, may significantly reduce child postoperative distress. In contrast, adult behaviors such as empathy, reassurance, and apology direct a child’s attention towards their pain which may increase a child’s overall postoperative distress. Moreover, patient demographic factors, like child ethnicity, may significantly alter the frequency of use of these …
The Effects Of Zoledronate And Sleep Deprivation On The Distal Femur Trabecular Thickness Of Ovariectomized Rats: Application Of Different Statistical Methods, Erin Nolte
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Osteoporosis is a disease that causes the degradation of bone, leading to an increased risk of fracture. 1 in 3 women over the age of 50 will be affected by Osteoporosis. This study aims to understand how bone is affected by sleep deprivation in estrogen-deficient rats, and how Zoledronate might negate the inimical effects of sleep deprivation on bone. As bone mineral density (BMD) is a crude evaluation of the architectural changes seen in Osteoporosis, trabecular thickness may serve as a better single evaluation of bone health. 31 Wistar female rats were ovariectomized and separated into 4 random groups. The …

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
A drinking fountain, also called a water fountain, is a facility designed to provide drinking water in public space. It consists of a basin and a spout. The users need to bend down to the stream to collect or drink water. The history of water fountains can be traced back to ancient Rome. Even before potable water was provided to individual homes, water for drinking was already made available to citizens through access to public fountains. Nowadays, drinking water fountains usually exist in public places, like schools, hospitals, and libraries. Many jurisdictions in the United States require drinking fountains to …

The majority of clinically diagnosed cutaneous T‐cell lymphomas (CTCL) highly express the cell‐surface markers CC chemokine receptor 4 (CCR4) and/or CD25. Recently, we have developed diphtheria toxin‐based recombinant Ontak®‐like human IL2 fusion toxin (IL2 fusion toxin) and anti‐human CCR4 immunotoxin (CCR4 IT). In this study, we first compared the efficacy of the CCR4 IT vs IL2 fusion toxin for targeting human CD25+CCR4+ CTCL. We demonstrated that CCR4 IT was more effective than IL2 fusion toxin. We further constructed an IL2‐CCR4 bispecific IT. The bispecific IT was significantly more effective than either IL2 fusion toxin or CCR4 IT alone. The bispecific …
