Social Conformity And The Line Judgement Task For Adolescents With Asd, Jamie Mcclendon
Rehabilitation, Human Resources and Communication Disorders Undergraduate Honors Theses
The primary intent of this study is to add to the growing research regarding social functioning and theory of mind (ToM) of young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This study takes into account the Solomon Asch line judgement tasks effect on peer pressure and social conformity. Previous research has shown that there is a discrepancy in the conformity exhibited by typically developing individuals (TD) and ASD individuals. This study seeks to address the degree to which ASD individuals are affected by social influence and how likely they will be to conform. Conformity rates will be compared to that of …
A Faith-Based Quality Improvement Project To Increase Awareness, Prevention, And Management Of Coronary Heart Disease In African Immigrants, Temitope S. Okpebho
A Faith-Based Quality Improvement Project To Increase Awareness, Prevention, And Management Of Coronary Heart Disease In African Immigrants, Temitope S. Okpebho
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Problem Description: Coronary heart disease (CHD) affects people globally, and it is the leading cause of death in the United States. Despite increased CHD awareness, evidence shows the increased prevalence and low CHD awareness among African Immigrants. According to Boateng et al. (2017), African immigrants are more likely to have CHD risk factors and be unaware. This may be due to changes in eating habits, lack of physical activity, increased stress level, and the adaptation of the Western diet.
Rationale: This project included implementing a culture care theory in a faith-based organization to increase awareness, management, and prevention of CHD …

Unanticipated Stressful And Rewarding Experiences Engage The Same Prefrontal Cortex And Ventral Tegmental Area Neuronal Populations, Alberto Del Arco, Junchol Park, Bita Moghaddam
Faculty and Student Publications
© 2020 Del Arco et al. Brain networks that mediate motivated behavior in the context of aversive and rewarding experiences involve the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and ventral tegmental area (VTA). Neurons in both regions are activated by stress and reward, and by learned cues that predict aversive or appetitive outcomes. Recent studies have proposed that separate neuronal populations and circuits in these regions encode learned aversive versus appetitive contexts. But how about the actual experience? Do the same or different PFC and VTA neurons encode unanticipated aversive and appetitive experiences? To address this, we recorded unit activity and local field …

The Relationship Between Sport Commitment With Off-Season Training Time And Previous In-Season Playing Time In College-Aged Soccer Players 2020., Luke Zuber
Master's Theses
Sport commitment is defined as “…the desire and resolve to continue sport participation” (Scanlan, Carpenter, Schmidt, Simons, & Keeler, 1993, p. 6). Since the first definition, the concept has been further refined to reflect a more multidimensional paradigm. Overall, sport commitment is thought to be comprised of the dimensions of enthusiastic commitment and constrained commitment (Scanlan, Chow, Sousa, Scanlan, & Knifsend, 2016). Those constructs can be broken down further to 12 subconstructs that are represented in the Sport Commitment – 2 (SC; Scanlan, Chow, Sousa, Scanlan, & Knifsend, 2016), in order to evaluate the source and level of an individual’s …

Separation Anxiety, Nisha Sidana
Separation Anxiety, Nisha Sidana
Community Reflections
I wrote this poem about a month and a half after we were sent home from SHU. A couple of my friends were talking to me one day, telling me how much they missed their boyfriends/girlfriends, everything they love about them, and their longing to see them, knowing they wouldn't be able to. I took inspiration from this, as well as the feeling of being suddenly separated from the people you love, and wrote it into a poem I titled "Separation Anxiety." I wanted to artistically express the feeling a person gets when they realize how much they have taken …

Family-Centered Care In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Madison Winter
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Family-centered care can be useful in any clinical scenario, but more so in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Having a preterm infant admitted into the NICU is not an ideal situation, and can cause high levels of apprehension for the parents. “Stress experienced by parents whose infant is hospitalized in the NICU is strongly correlated with anxiety, fatigue, depression, and sleep disruption” (Busse et al., 2013). Willingess To Use Telehealth For Diabetes Management In The Rural Healthcare Setting, Andrew Kim
Willingess To Use Telehealth For Diabetes Management In The Rural Healthcare Setting, Andrew Kim
Doctoral Projects
Diabetes is a disease that has far reaching physically and financially consequences. This disease has shown to increase morbidity and mortality, along with increasing overall healthcare costs. Optimal management of diabetes may require a multidisciplinary approach across the span of multiple encounters with the diabetic patient. Considering the nature of diabetes, integration of telehealth has the opportunity to improve diabetes management by improving healthcare outcomes, along with potential cost savings. However, the use of novel technology like telehealth is only as useful if patients are willing to use it. Thus, this survey aimed to determining whether patients within a rural …

The Autoimmune System: The Effect Of Physiological Stressors On Autoantibody Glycosylation And Fidelity Of Autoantibody Profiles, Rahil Kheirkhah
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations
The presence of thousands of autoantibodies (aABs) in the human sera is typical, and therefore it is possible to identify an aAB profile for each individual. In the first part of this thesis, we will show the cerebrospinal fluid also exhibits an extraordinarily complex immunoglobulin G aAB profile that is composed of thousands of aABs. We show that the pattern of expression of individual aABs in CSF closely mimics that in the blood, indicative of a blood-based origin for CSF aABs. In addition, using longitudinal serum samples obtained over a span of nine years, we show remarkable stability in aAB …

Proceeding Without Consent: The Ethics Of Disregarding Patient Preference For Paternalistic Reasons, Nicholas Munsey
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Within the last few decades, modern medical regulations have brought the practicing medical community to an unprecedented level of accountability. Laws and regulations governing the practice of medicine were once, at best, loosely enforced guidelines; practices such as experimental surgeries, dangerous health testing, end of life care, and treatment of mental illness were left comparatively unregulated. The introduction of patient rights and new standards for practicing have left the medical community with a novel dilemma: how might one approach a patient who, according to medical advice, is in need of treatment if that patient is unable to express preference or …

The Benefit Of Neonatal Intensive Care Units Providing A Specialized Program For Newborns In Drug Withdraw, Jessie Creekmore
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Hospitals across America have intensive care units dedicated to neonates who are born with a wide variety of issues, with the hope that specialized care will promote healthy growth so the newborn can return home with its family. Unfortunately, the majority of the country is seeing an increase in neonates being born with drugs in their system from their mother’s dependency during pregnancy. Delivering mothers who were addicted to opioids quadrupled between 1999-2004, which resulted in an increase of infants born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome from 1.2 per 1000 births in the year 2000 to 5.63 per 1000 births in …

Efficacy Of A Mobile Application In A Chronic Kidney Disease Population, Jennifer R. Zamora
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with high healthcare costs, poor health outcomes and low quality of life (Donald et al., 2018). The US CKD prevalence is 15%, costing Medicare $79 billion in 2016 (United States Renal Data System, 2018). Self-management could reduce CKD burden (Jeddi, Nabovati, and Amirazodi, 2017). Mobile technology offers a low-cost, ease-of-access platform for chronic disease self-management (Whitehead & Seaton, 2016), potentially slowing disease progression and improving health outcomes (Jeddi, 2017). The purpose of this project was to utilize a CKD-specific mobile application, CARELogiQ, to facilitate symptom management; increasing patient satisfaction and decreasing hospitalizations and ER …
