METHODS: Using an established animal model, C57BL/6 wild-type (WT) and B-cell receptor (BCR) knock-out (KO) mice were repetitively treated with intranasal inhalation of swine confinement organic dust extract (ODE) daily for 3 weeks and lavage fluid, lung tissues, and serum were collected.

RESULTS: ODE-induced neutrophil influx in lavage fluid was not reduced …

Treating The Most Seriously Addicted Using Elements Of Therapeutic Community: The Importance Of Treatment Vocabulary, Arthur P. Sullivan, Penny Sullivan-Nunes, Edmundo Nunes Jan 2017

Treating The Most Seriously Addicted Using Elements Of Therapeutic Community: The Importance Of Treatment Vocabulary, Arthur P. Sullivan, Penny Sullivan-Nunes, Edmundo Nunes

Department of Behavioral Science Publications and Research

The inadequacy of individual psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy for treating the severely addicted (those addicted to many substances, or if one, opioids) was addressed by the development of the therapeutic community (TC) treatment model. TC treatment was residential and lengthy, but effective: it enabled the most pernicious of addictions to be managed, relapses to be reduced, and the patients enabled to lead enjoyable lives with rewarding relationships, families, education, and employment. Years of budget difficulties have reduced the cost of TC treatment by reducing or eliminating elements of TC treatment, with commensurate loss of treatment gains for the patients. This paper …

Medicinal Chemistry Publications

Huanglian Jiedu Decoction (HJD), one of the classic recipes for relieving toxicity and fever, is a common method for treating sepsis in China. However, the effective components of HJD have not yet been identified. This experiment was carried out to elucidate the effective components of HJD against sepsis. Thus, seven fractions from HJD were tested using a biosensor to test their affinity for lipid A. The components obtained that had high lipid A-binding fractions were further separated, and their affinities to lipid A were assessed with the aid of a biosensor. The levels of LPS in the blood were measured, …

Silver Nanoparticles And Drug Resistant Bacteria, Aliza Eisig Jan 2017

Silver Nanoparticles And Drug Resistant Bacteria, Aliza Eisig

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The scientist who discovered penicillin and its use as an antibiotic, Alexander Fleming, also raised concerns about bacterial resistance. As he predicted, in the twenty first century, the overwhelming use of antibiotics has led to both drug- and multi-drug resistant bacteria. This paper attempts to investigate the antibacterial potential of silver nanoparticles against drug resistant bacteria. By using Touro's online library database, the efficacy of silver nanoparticles as a potential antibacterial agent was comprehensively researched. Using transmission electron microscopy and the disk diffusion method, silver nanoparticles have been found to exert bactericidal effects by adsorbing to the cell surface and …

Chaplain Spiritual Assessment And Its Efficacy For The Palliative Care Team At Roper St. Francis Healthcare: An Interdisciplinary-Phenomenologic Inquiry, Yhanco Monet

Doctor of Ministry Projects

A qualitative phenomenological research methodology was designed and implemented to answer the question: what is it that chaplains assessed which is perceived as useful for the Roper St. Francis Palliative Care team? Twelve Palliative Care practitioners, representing diverse specialties, were interviewed and surveyed to answer the research question. Evidence suggested that spiritual care and chaplaincy assessments were perceived as relevant to the Roper St. Francis’ Palliative Care praxis. However, the gathered data indicates that chaplains and Palliative Care practitioners would benefit from a more standardized/consistent spiritual assessment practice. A set of “Teaching Guidelines” and educational “Activities” was created with the …

To Err Is Human: Can American Medicine Learn From Past Mistakes?, Jeffrey B. Ritterman Jan 2017

To Err Is Human: Can American Medicine Learn From Past Mistakes?, Jeffrey B. Ritterman

The history of medicine includes many errors. Some persisted for decades and caused great harm. Several are highlighted in this article, including the mythical thymic diseases: thymic asthma and status thymicolymphaticus. Some medical mistakes, such as the diet-heart hypothesis of Ancel Keys, continue to cause harm. To avoid future errors and their associated harm, I suggest a cultural shift encouraging professional humility and greater questioning of medical dogma. Medical education focused on teaching students this history may help with this cultural shift.
