Congenital Left Ventricle-To-Coronary Sinus Fistula: A Rare Isolated Anomaly Of The Coronary Sinus., Doaa M. Aly, Nikki M. Singh, Sanket Shah

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Congenital anomalies of the coronary sinus (CS) are very uncommon. They can occur either in isolation or in association with other congenital heart defects. 1 Among those anomalies, congenital fistulae connecting the left ventricle and the CS represent a very rare entity. Most reported cases of CS fistula generally originate in the right coronary artery or left anterior descending coronary artery system. 2 We describe an extremely rare case of an isolated high-pressure congenital left ventricle–to–CS fistula as an anomaly of the CS in an otherwise asymptomatic child. The initial clinical presentation and follow-up, imaging studies, and plan for management …

Imaging & Diagnostic Radiology, East Africa

Background:Mammographic density (MD) is one of the strongest breast cancer risk factors. Its age-related characteristics have been studied in women in western countries, but whether these associations apply to women worldwide is not known.

Methods and findings: We examined cross-sectional differences in MD by age and menopausal status in over 11,000 breast-cancer-free women aged 35–85 years, from 40 ethnicity- and location-specific population groups across 22 countries in the International Consortium on Mammographic Density (ICMD). MD was read centrally using a quantitative method (Cumulus) and its square-root metrics were analysed using meta-analysis of group-level estimates and linear regression models of …

Understanding Gender Differences In Sports-Related Concussions Among High School Athletes: Implications For Diagnosis, Treatment, And Management, Hillary Grady-Speckhals

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

Growing research on both the immediate and long-term effects of sports-related concussions (SRCs) in professional athletes has called attention not only to understanding the impact of concussions in high school athletes, but has also focused on understanding how SRCs may impact female athletes differently than male athletes (Covassin & Elbin, 2011; Kirkwood, Yeates, & Wilson, 2006). There are many studies that have highlighted the neurocognitive, academic, and socioemotional implications of these brain injuries on developing youth, but there are few studies that focus on gender differences in adolescent athletes (Daneshvar, Nowinski, McKee, & Cantu, 2011; Kirkwood, et al., 2006). Understanding …

Connecting The Brain To Itself Through An Emulation., Mijail D. Serruya

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Pilot clinical trials of human patients implanted with devices that can chronically record and stimulate ensembles of hundreds to thousands of individual neurons offer the possibility of expanding the substrate of cognition. Parallel trains of firing rate activity can be delivered in real-time to an array of intermediate external modules that in turn can trigger parallel trains of stimulation back into the brain. These modules may be built in software, VLSI firmware, or biological tissue as in vitro culture preparations or in vivo ectopic construct organoids. Arrays of modules can be constructed as early stage whole brain emulators, following canonical …

OBJECTIVES: Predicting mortality in middle-aged HIV-infected (HIV+) women on antiretroviral therapies (ART) is important for understanding the impact of HIV infection. Several health indices have been used to predict mortality in women with HIV infection. We evaluated: (1) an HIV biological index, Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS); (2) a physical index, Fried Frailty Index (FFI); and (3) a mental health index, Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression (CES-D). Proportional hazards regression analyses were used to predict death and included relevant covariates.

DESIGN: Prospective, observational cohort.

SETTING: Multicentre, across six sites in the USA.

PARTICIPANTS: 1385 multirace/ethnic ART-experienced HIV+ women in 2005.

Macrolides Selectively Inhibit Mutant Kcnj5 Potassium Channels That Cause Aldosterone-Producing Adenoma, Ute Scholl, Laura Abriola, Chengbiao Zhang, Esther Reimer, Mark Plummer, Wenhui Wang, Richard Lifton

NYMC Faculty Publications

Aldosterone-producing adenomas (APAs) are benign tumors of the adrenal gland that constitutively produce the salt-retaining steroid hormone aldosterone and cause millions of cases of severe hypertension worldwide. Either of 2 somatic mutations in the potassium channel KCNJ5 (G151R and L168R, hereafter referred to as KCNJ5MUT) in adrenocortical cells account for half of APAs worldwide. These mutations alter channel selectivity to allow abnormal Na+ conductance, resulting in membrane depolarization, calcium influx, aldosterone production, and cell proliferation. Because APA diagnosis requires a difficult invasive procedure, patients often remain undiagnosed and inadequately treated. Inhibitors of KCNJ5MUT could allow noninvasive diagnosis and therapy of …
