Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) play a vital role for improved imaging applications. Recently, a number of studies demonstrate MNPs can be applied for targeted delivery, sustained release of therapeutics, and hyperthermia. Based on stable particle size and shape, biocompatibility, and inherent contrast enhancement characteristics, MNPs have been encouraged for pre-clinical studies and human use. As a theranostic platform development, MNPs need to balance both delivery and imaging aspects. Thus, this review provides significant insight and advances in the theranostic role of MNPs through the documentation of unique magnetic nanoparticles used in prostate cancer, their interaction with prostate cancer cells, in vivo …

Effect Of Insecticide-Treated Bed Nets On House-Entry By Malaria Mosquitoes: The Flight Response Recorded In A Semi-Field Study In Kenya, Jeroen Spitzen, Teun Koelewijn, W. Richard Mukabana, Willem Takken

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Insecticide-treated nets are currently a major tool to reduce malaria transmission. Their level of repellency affects contact of the mosquito with the net, but may also influence the mosquito's entry into the house. The response of host-seeking malaria mosquitoes approaching the eave of an experimental house was recorded within a large screen house. We compared entry- and exit rates in relation to the presence in the house of different insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) with an untreated net. Mosquitoes were lured towards the house by dispensing a synthetic host-odour blend from within the net in the house. Complementary WHO bioassays revealed …

Comparison Of Chikungunya Virus Strains In Disease Severity And Susceptibility To T-705 (Favipiravir), In Vitro And In Vivo, Makda Gebre

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Chikungunya is a mosquito-transmitted disease caused by Chikungunya virus (CHIKV). Symptoms of Chikungunya include debilitating joint pain and swelling, fever and rash. CHIKV was first discovered in 1953 in Tanzania, and has since caused periodic outbreaks of disease. The virus reemerged recently in 2004 and has since spread around the world affecting more than 3 million people. The different strains of CHIKV have been grouped into three phylogenetic clades: West African, Asian and East/Central/South African (ECSA). There are no FDA approved medicines or vaccines used to treat or prevent CHIKV infection. The antiviral drug, T-705 (commercially known as Favipiravir), has …

Treatments For Opioid Use Disorder Among Pregnant And Reproductive-Aged Women., Dennis J. Hand, Vanessa L. Short, Diane J. Abatemarco Aug 2017

Treatments For Opioid Use Disorder Among Pregnant And Reproductive-Aged Women., Dennis J. Hand, Vanessa L. Short, Diane J. Abatemarco

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Papers

The increased prevalence of opioid use disorder and access to medical insurance is subsequently increasing the likelihood that medical professionals will encounter individuals with opioid use disorder. Sharp increases in opioid use disorder among women mean that obstetricians, gynecologists, and other reproductive medicine providers may be especially likely to encounter such patients. Medical professionals' understanding of treatment for opioid use disorder and their roles in their patients' treatment may increase referrals to treatment, reduce stigma, and improve the quality of medical care. Treatment for opioid use disorder falls into four overlapping domains: medication management, medical care, behavioral/mental health care, and …

Metabolic Regulation Of Cellular Signaling, Rashid John Darbandi Aug 2017

Metabolic Regulation Of Cellular Signaling, Rashid John Darbandi

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Using the biochemically tractable Xenopus oocyte model system, we have previously characterized a novel metabolic regulation of cell death. We found that glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) via the pentose phosphate pathway leads to increased nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) levels, a subsequent increase in cytosolic acetyl-coenzyme A and activation of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII). We recently identified coenzyme A (CoA), derived from the breakdown of acetyl-CoA, as the key metabolic signal that mediates a novel mechanism of calmodulindependent activation of CaMKII. CoA binds directly to the calmodulin (CaM) binding domain (CaMBD) of CaMKII resulting in its activation and downstream inhibitory phosphorylation …

Optical Coherence Tomographic Evaluation Of Hyperacute Bivalirudin-Induced Coronary Stent Thrombosis, Jorge L Peñalver, Wassim Shatila, Emerson Perin Aug 2017

Optical Coherence Tomographic Evaluation Of Hyperacute Bivalirudin-Induced Coronary Stent Thrombosis, Jorge L Peñalver, Wassim Shatila, Emerson Perin

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

Thrombus formation after stent deployment has been linked to the use of heparin and of antithrombotic agents, such as bivalirudin, during percutaneous coronary intervention. Fluoroscopy has been used to identify stent thrombosis, typically after patients become symptomatic. We describe our use of optical coherence tomography to diagnose and evaluate intraprocedural stent thrombosis in a 68-year-old man who was given bivalirudin just before a percutaneous coronary procedure. This imaging method enabled immediate therapeutic intervention.

Opioid And Naloxone Prescribing Practices In Mississippi, Rebecca Brown, Brittany Clayton, Alissa Damiens, Natalie Keyes, Gary A. Mcpherson, Anna E. Wiygul

MSN Research Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine whether primary care providers (PCPs) in Mississippi are following the selected Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines published in March 2016 for prescribing opioids for chronic, non-cancer pain. The study also sought to determine if the selected providers prescribed naloxone for opioid overdose reversal. Drug overdoses have increased exponentially in the last 3 decades in the United States (Doyon, Aks, & Schaeffer, 2014) — leading to opioid overdose becoming the most frequent cause of accidental death. Opioid overdose death rates are so high the CDC declared it a problem of …

Knowledge And Beliefs Of Parents Of Young Athletes Regarding Sports-Related Overuse Injuries, Kathryn C. Carroll Aug 2017

Knowledge And Beliefs Of Parents Of Young Athletes Regarding Sports-Related Overuse Injuries, Kathryn C. Carroll

MSN Research Projects

Overuse injuries in the pediatric population constitute a substantial healthcare problem. Approximately 50% of pediatric sports-related injuries occur from overuse (McLeod et al., 2011). Although overuse injuries are not associated with direct mortality, the morbidity of these injuries is significant (Laker, Strum, & Sullivan, 2015). Research has shown that these injuries can be prevented by early recognition and diligent efforts by those that influence a child’s health (McLeod et al., 2011). Parental knowledge and intentionality are vital to the prevention of overuse injuries in children. Researchers administered a descriptive, quantitative survey to parents of young athletes ages 5 to 18 …

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

Invasion of a renal cell carcinoma thrombus into the inferior vena cava and right atrium is infrequent. Reaching and completely excising a tumor from the inferior vena cava is particularly challenging because the liver covers the surgical field. We report the case of a 61-year-old man who underwent surgery for a renal cell carcinoma of the right kidney that extended into the inferior vena cava and right atrium. During dissection of the liver to expose the inferior vena cava, transesophageal echocardiograms revealed right atrial mass migration into the tricuspid valve. On emergency sternotomy, the tumor embolized into the main pulmonary …

Echocardiographic Classification And Surgical Approaches To Double-Outlet Right Ventricle For Great Arteries Arising Almost Exclusively From The Right Ventricle, Kun-Jing Pang, Hong Meng, Sheng-Shou Hu, Hao Wang, David Hsi, Zhong-Dong Hua, Xiang-Bin Pan, Shou-Jun Li

The Texas Heart Institute Journal

Selecting an appropriate surgical approach for double-outlet right ventricle (DORV), a complex congenital cardiac malformation with many anatomic variations, is difficult. Therefore, we determined the feasibility of using an echocardiographic classification system, which describes the anatomic variations in more precise terms than the current system does, to determine whether it could help direct surgical plans. Our system includes 8 DORV subtypes, categorized according to 3 factors: the relative positions of the great arteries (normal or abnormal), the relationship between the great arteries and the ventricular septal defect (committed or noncommitted), and the presence or absence of right ventricular outflow tract …

Assessing Patient Perceptions Of Self-Care: Examining Chronic Disease In An Underserved Rural Area, Somer Leigh Overshon

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Affordable Care Act of 2010 mandated healthcare reform in the United States by requiring insurance coverage for more Americans. Further, the law deemed healthcare providers, communities and individuals throughout the nation were responsible for fighting chronic disease and escalating healthcare costs. Preventive care and self-care have been cited as low-cost options for initiating change in the American population by helping individuals have access, information and resources to make better healthcare choices and manage their chronic diseases. The purpose of this ethnographic study was to identify the perceptions of self-care from patients living with chronic disease in an underserved, rural …

Testing An Integrated Model Of Help Seeking With Ethnically Diverse Primary Care Patients, Bianca Teresa Villalobos Aug 2017

Testing An Integrated Model Of Help Seeking With Ethnically Diverse Primary Care Patients, Bianca Teresa Villalobos

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Structural and attitudinal barriers prevent many individuals from accessing professional mental health services and often times lead to the premature termination of treatment. Although research findings suggest that the integration of mental health services in primary care can increase access to services and reduce stigma for typically underserved populations, dropout occurs at high rates. The current study aims to: (1) identify correlates of attitudinal and structural barriers in a primary care setting, and (2) test the ability of the Integrated Model of Seeking Help (IMoSH) to predict follow-up for behavioral health visits. In particular, it was hypothesized that attitudinal barriers …

BACKGROUND: Cross-reactive immunological material-negative (CRIM-negative) infantile Pompe disease (IPD) patients develop an immune response against enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with alglucosidase alfa that nullifies ERT efficacy. Prophylactic immune tolerance induction (ITI) with rituximab, methotrexate, and IVIG successfully prevents development of deleterious rhGAA IgG antibodies; however, safety, likelihood of success, and long-term efficacy of ITI in a larger cohort remain unknown. METHODS: Clinical data were analyzed for 19 CRIM-negative IPD patients who received ITI with rituximab, methotrexate, and IVIG in the ERT-naive setting (ERT+ITI) and compared to a historical cohort of 10 CRIM-negative IPD patients on ERT monotherapy. RESULTS: ITI was …

Application Of Open-Access Databases To Determine Functional Connectivity Between Resveratrol-Binding Protein Qr2 And Colorectal Carcinoma, Barbara B. Doonan, Evelien Schaafsma, John T. Pinto, Joseph M. Wu, Tze-Chen Hsieh

NYMC Faculty Publications

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major cause of cancer-associated deaths worldwide. Recently, oral administration of resveratrol (trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene) has been reported to significantly reduce tumor proliferation in colorectal cancer patients, however, with little specific information on functional connections. The pathogenesis and development of colorectal cancer is a multistep process that can be categorized using three phenotypic pathways, respectively, chromosome instability (CIN), microsatellite instability (MSI), and CpG island methylator (CIMP). Targets of resveratrol, including a high-affinity binding protein, quinone reductase 2 (QR2), have been identified with little information on disease association. We hypothesize that the relationship between resveratrol and different CRC etiologies …

Defects In Skeletal Muscle Subsarcolmmal Mitochondria In A Non-Obese Model Of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Nicola Lai, China Kummitha, Charles Hoppel

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Skeletal muscle resistance to insulin is related to accumulation of lipid-derived products, but it is not clear whether this accumulation is caused by skeletal muscle mitochondrial dysfunction. Diabetes and obesity are reported to have a selective effect on the function of subsarcolemmal and interfibrillar mitochondria in insulin-resistant skeletal muscle. The current study investigated the role of the subpopulations of mitochondria in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance in the absence of obesity. A non-obese spontaneous rat model of type 2 diabetes mellitus, (Goto-Kakizaki), was used to evaluate function and biochemical properties in both populations of skeletal muscle mitochondria. In subsarcolemmal mitochondria, …

Heart failure (HF) is one of the leading causes of morbidity, mortality, and health care expenditures in the US and worldwide. For three decades, the pillars of treatment of HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) were medications that targeted the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Prior attempts to augment the natriuretic peptide system (NPS) for the management of HF failed either due to lack of significant clinical benefit or due to the unacceptable side effect profile. This review article will discuss the NPS, the failure of early drugs which targeted the NPS as therapies for HF, …
