Background/aim: The aim of this prospective study was to determine whether the preoperative oral intake of carbohydrate-rich drinks by patients undergoing a coronary artery bypass graft attenuates postoperative insulin requirements, improves postoperative patient discomfort, provides inotropic support, shortens the length of the ICU stay, and shortens the duration of postoperative mechanical ventilation. Materials and methods: This randomized prospective clinical study included 152 patients with coronary artery disease who were divided into 4 groups. Background/aim: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is characterized by increased calcium (Ca) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels. Surgical removal of the culprit hyperfunctioning parathyroid gland is the preferred treatment. In this study, we aimed to determine whether PTH-washout or cytological examination of suspicious lesions was superior in MIBI-negative patients diagnosed with PHPT.Materials and methods: We retrospectively evaluated the medical records of 98 patients diagnosed with PHPT. Seventy-six patients who had positive parathyroid scintigraphy and who did not undergo parathyroidectomy in our center due to various reasons were excluded. Background/aim: Bleeding in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) while using dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) is a cause of significant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study is to examine the perioperative hemostatic effects of tranexamic acid (TnX-A) and desmopressin acetate (Des) in these patients. Materials and methods: This study included CBCT images of 190 individuals (88 males and 102 females). The sagittal and transverse diameters and circumference of the FM were measured. Adenoidectomy is a commonly performed procedure in children that may cause complications such as early or late bleeding (4%-5%), recurrence of adenoid tissue (10%-20%), and postoperative respiratory problems (27%). Background/aim: We developed a Turkish version of the Bladder and Bowel Dysfunction Questionnaire (BBDQ) and evaluated its psychometric properties among Turkish pediatric patients.Materials and methods: The BBDQ was translated into Turkish and then it was back-translated into English. A total of 193 patients were asked to complete the Turkish version of the BBDQ as well as the Dysfunctional Voiding and Incontinence Scoring System (DVISS). In addition, 39 children completed the same questionnaires twice at 2-week intervals for test/retest evaluation.Results: Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the BBDQ was 0.727. Reliability of the test/retest was 0.759 (P < 0.001). Area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic plot was 0.765. There were statistically significant differences in BBDQ scores between the controls and patients (P < 0.001). Analysis demonstrated moderate convergent validity against the DVISS (r: 0.78, r2: 0.601, P < 0.0001).Conclusion: The Turkish version of the BBDQ is a reliable and valid instrument for Turkish pediatric patients with bladder and bowel dysfunction in clinical and research settings.

Background/aim: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of ultrasound (US)-guided injection versus blind injection of corticosteroids in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Materials and methods: This prospective, randomized clinical trial included patients with severe CTS based on clinical and electrophysiological criteria. The patients were evaluated for clinical and electrophysiological parameters at baseline and 4 weeks after treatment. Symptom severity and hand function were assessed by the Boston questionnaire. The patients underwent blind injection or US-guided injection. Background/aim: We evaluated the relations of the exiting points of supratrochlear (STN), supraorbital (SON), and zygomaticotemporal (ZTN) nerves with certain landmarks to provide improved anatomic knowledge. Materials and methods: The twenty-eight hemifaces of 5 fresh frozen and 11 embalmed heads (5 female and 11 male cadavers) were dissected. Kawasaki disease (KD) is a rare vascular disease that, if left untreated, can result in irreparable cardiac damage in children. While the symptoms of KD are well-known, as are best practices for treatment, the etiology of the disease and the factors contributing to KD outbreaks remain puzzling to both medical practitioners and scientists alike. Recently, a fungus known as Candida, originating in the farmlands of China, has been blamed for outbreaks in China and Japan, with the hypothesis that it can be transported over long ranges via different wind mechanisms. This paper presents secondary analyses of the National Health Interview Survey data focused on emergency department (ED) utilization among Asian adults residing in the United States. National Health Interview Survey data provided from survey years 2006-2013 was pooled and disaggregated by single-race Asian ethnic subgroups (Filipino, Chinese, Asian Indian, other Asian). We explored trends in reports of an ED visit over the survey years for the purpose of determining whether reports of an ED visit increased or decreased over survey years. We also explored background/biologic, environment, access to care, and behavior factors and their associations with having an ED visit. …

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether noninvasive measurements such as waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) are effective for people who have a normal to overweight BMI in determining risk for type 2 diabetes. 29 million US adults have diabetes and 86 million have prediabetes. Numerous studies have indicated waist circumference as a strong predictor of type 2 diabetes in obese individuals. However there are few that research the effects of these anthropometric measurements with individuals who look lean but are potentially metabolically obese.

This study investigated the implications of attachment orientations and personality dimensions for accuracy in detecting deception from emotionally-based statements. Thirty individuals (M age = 25.33, range = 18-52) completed a survey that included the Personality Inventory for DSM-V-Brief Form and the Relationship Styles Questionnaire to measure the individual differences in question. To measure deceit, 7 mental health counselors volunteered to participate in a video-recorded mock interview concerning their current romantic partner—3 individuals provided false responses, and the remaining 4 offered true answers. Background: Geosocial networking (GSN) applications (apps) have made finding sexual partners easier for partner-seeking MSM, raising challenges for HIV/STI prevention but also providing opportunities for research. To date, little is known about app usage in smaller cities where there may be more stigma surrounding MSM.

Objective: This study uses GSN apps to identify areas with high density partner-seeking MSM, and to characterize these areas using Census block group demographic measures in a Southern mid-sized city.

The availability of prescriptions for opioids has been increasing since 1996. This type of drug is commonly misused by adolescents ages 12 to 17, making the trends in availability particularly alarming. Adolescence is a crucial point initiation of several risk behaviors, including substance use. During this time, parental monitoring, or awareness of the child’s activities and communication about those activities, is incredibly important for prevention of those risk behaviors. Breathe Easy Mississippi is a multi-level intervention designed to improve long term control of asthma in youth. Objectives: To test if the structure of a proposed theoretical model comprised of specific observed variables clustered to measure three latent variables of anxiety, depression, and fatigue exhibited good global fit with the observed data and had adequate reliability using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). A secondary objective was to use structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the direct effect of the latent variables of depression, anxiety, and fatigue on orofacial pain outcomes.

Previous research has demonstrated that natural views and access to plants appear to have significant beneficial effects on individuals (Relf, 1992). Studies of green views out of a classroom window showed significant reductions in students’ mental fatigue (Li & Sullivan, 2016), and studies of indoor plants in hospital settings showed stress reduction and increased healing rates in patients (Ulrich, 1984). Indoor plants in the workplace demonstrated improved employee performance (Kweon, Ulrich, Walker, & Tassinary, 2008).
