Reliability, Validity And Acceptability Of Modified Response Formats Of Apd Instruments For Children Using Aac, Allison Cara Soll

Independent Studies and Capstones

A pilot study consisting of a parent questionnaire, four APD tests and an acceptability questionnaire were presented to normal hearing and cognitively developing children between the ages of 8-12 years. Responses to a standard and modified response format of the APD tests were obtained over two test sessions. Results indicated that the modified response formats of the four APD tests were acceptable, fairly reliable and three out of the four APD tests were valid.

Results indicate performance in the bilateral cochlear implant condition is significantly better than listening with each implant alone for the outcome measures used in this study.

Investigation Of The Effects Of Co2 Insufflation On Blood Gas Values During Laparoscopic Procedures In Pigs, Özlem Güzel, Di̇lek Olğun Erdi̇kmen, Di̇dar Aydin, Zi̇hni̇ Mutlu, Esma Yildar Jan 2012

Investigation Of The Effects Of Co2 Insufflation On Blood Gas Values During Laparoscopic Procedures In Pigs, Özlem Güzel, Di̇lek Olğun Erdi̇kmen, Di̇dar Aydin, Zi̇hni̇ Mutlu, Esma Yildar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Due to the fact that they produce less post-operative pain and shorter hospitalisation times, laparoscopic surgery procedures are more widely used than many traditional open surgical methods. However, the carbon dioxide gas used to visualise the surgical site during the procedure causes complications such as an increase in the blood CO_2 level and acidosis. In the present study, 12 male pigs were used. Sedation was achieved via intramuscular injection of xylazine at a dose of 2 mg/kg and anaesthesia induction was done via slow intravenous injection of ketamine HCl at a dose of 2 mg/kg. Following endotracheal intubation, general anaesthesia …

This study used a secondary data set approved by Institutional Review Board, and obtained a written permission and approval for data use. The data set used for this study was not …

Predictors Of Treatment Outcome For Contingency Management Of Stimulant Abstinence In Severely Mentally Ill Outpatients, Frank Albert Nowland Angelo Jan 2012

Predictors Of Treatment Outcome For Contingency Management Of Stimulant Abstinence In Severely Mentally Ill Outpatients, Frank Albert Nowland Angelo

Theses Digitization Project

This study will investigate the impact of client variables on in-treatment performance, in a contingency management intervention. Co-occurring disorders (COD) is a prolific problem with the severely mentally ill (SMI) population. People with both severe mental illness and substance abuse disorder suffer greater negative consequences of drug use than do populations with only one of these issues. This can be seen in greater levels of psychiatric symptoms, higher levels of interpersonal violence, and increased homelessness. Drug use has been found to exacerbate psychotic symptoms and relapses in schizophrenic patients, when compared to schizophrenic persons without drug use.

Dynamic Variability Of Isometric Action Tremor In Precision Pinching, Tim Eakin, Waneen Spirduso, Karen Francis

Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)

Evolutionary development of isometric force impulse frequencies, power, and the directional concordance of changes in oscillatory tremor during performance of a two-digit force regulation task was examined. Analyses compared a patient group having tremor confounding volitional force regulation with a control group having no neuropathological diagnosis. Dependent variables for tremor varied temporally and spatially, both within individual trials and across trials, across individuals, across groups, and between digits. Particularly striking findings were magnitude increases during approaches to cue markers and shifts in the concordance phase from pinching toward rigid sway patterns as the magnitude increased. Magnitudes were significantly different among …

Psychology

Background: An international randomized clinical trial (RCT) on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as an human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-prevention intervention found that taken on a daily basis, PrEP was safe and effective among men who have sex with men (MSM) and male-to-female transgender women. Within the context of the HIV epidemic in the United States (US), MSM and transgender women are the most appropriate groups to target for PrEP implementation at the population level; however, their perspectives on evidenced-based biomedical research and the results of this large trial remain virtually unknown. In this study, we examined the acceptability of individual daily use …

Faculty Publications

Eryngium L. is the largest and arguably the most taxonomically complex genus of the family Apiaceae. The genus has approximately 250 species throughout the world, with the center of diversity in South America. Some Eryngium species are cultivated as ornamental, vegetable, or medicinal crops for folk uses. With increasing chemical and biological investigations, Eryngium has shown its potential as pharmaceutical crops. This review focuses on phytochemistry and pharmacological activities of 127 compounds isolated and identified from 23 species of Eryngium, particularly nonessential oil compounds such as terpenoids, triterpenoid saponins, flavonoids, coumarins, polyacetylenes, and steroids. Medical Practitioners' Death Anxiety And The Advance Directive, Daisy Macias, Natalie Macias Jan 2012

Medical Practitioners' Death Anxiety And The Advance Directive, Daisy Macias, Natalie Macias

Theses Digitization Project

This study examined whether there is a correlation between medical practitioner's level of death anxiety and communication about the advance directive. Even though there is a lot of common sense in stating the obvious complexity of issues surrounding end of life, there is also a clear discomfort with accepting the advance directive and the patient's wishes at face value and the underlying reasons for that may lie in the physician's own feelings over death.

Stigma Of Mental Illness-1: Clinical Reflections, Amresh Srivastava

Data and Test Instruments

Stigma of Mental Illness-1: Clinical Reflections Amresh Shrivastava*, Megan Johnston**, Yves Bureau*** ABSTRACT Although the quality and effectiveness of mental health treatments and services have improved greatly over the past 50 years, therapeutic revolutions in psychiatry have not yet been able to reduce stigma. Stigma is a risk factor leading to negative mental health outcomes. It is responsible for treatment seeking delays and reduces the likelihood that a mentally ill patient will receive adequate care. It is evident that delay due to stigma can have devastating consequences. This review will discuss the causes and consequences of stigma related to mental …
