Treating Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus With The Drug Vancomycin In A Home Infusion Therapy Setting, Joshua L. Webb, Alberto Coustasse, Dennis Emmett

Management Faculty Research

The basic purpose of this paper is to examine the effects the home infusion therapy has on the cost, duration of, and effectiveness of treatment between those individuals under 60 and those 60 and over. The results show that those 60 and over had a slightly higher cost/day. The older age group had slightly smaller treatment duration, then the younger group. The number of adverse effects was small. The results suggest that home infusion therapy appears to be a viable alternative to hospitalization.

Protecting Pakistan's Health During The Global Economic Crisis, Rashid Jooma, A Khan, A A. Khan

Section of Neurosurgery

The world is facing an unprecedented global economic crisis, with many countries needing to reconsider their level of health care spending. This paper explores the many consequences of the global economic turndown on Pakistan's health, including reduced government and donor spending and increased poverty with the consequent diversion of funds away from health. Nevertheless, these challenges may provide opportunities not only to mitigate the adverse effects of the economic crisis but also to institute some much-needed reforms that may not receive political support during more affluent times. Our suggestions focus on setting priorities based on the national disease burden, prioritizing …

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, Gulzar Salman Amlani Mar 2012

Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy, Gulzar Salman Amlani

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Acute renal failure refers to sudden deterioration in biochemical and physiological functioning of kidneys and often associated with multi organ failure. Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) holds special significance for the treatment of renal failure due to a variety of factors. It is believed that CRRT helps in restoration of acid-base imbalances and electrolyte abnormalities. Along with that, with gradual solute removal, it ensures haemodynamic stability and prevents the risk of cerebral oedema in neurosurgery patients. Besides this, several studies have supported that CRRT enables practitioners to adjust drug dosages and prevent drug accumulation and overdose. In addition, gradual removal …

Drive For Muscularity And Drive For Thinness: The Impact Of Pro-Anorexia Websites, Lilia Juarez, Ernesto Soto, Mary Pritchard Mar 2012

Drive For Muscularity And Drive For Thinness: The Impact Of Pro-Anorexia Websites, Lilia Juarez, Ernesto Soto, Mary Pritchard

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

In recent years, websites that stress the message of thinness as the ideal and only choice have surfaced on the internet. The possibility that pro-anorexia websites may reinforce restrictive eating and exercise behaviors is an area of concern. In addition, friends may be influencing one another to view these websites, further contributing to drive for thinness in women and drive for muscularity in men. Three hundred male and female undergraduate psychology students responded to questionnaires assessing: internalization of pro-anorexia website content, internalization of general media content, influence of friends to view pro-anorexia websites, peer influence, drive for muscularity, and drive …

Lpl Gene Variants Affect Apoc-Iii Response To Combination Therapy Of Statins And Fenofibric Acid In A Randomized Clinical Trial Of Individuals With Mixed Dyslipidemia, Ariel Brautbar, Salim S. Virani, John Belmont, Vijay Nambi, Peter H. Jones, Christie M. Ballantyne

Office of the Provost

ApoC-III is a proatherogenic protein associated with elevated triglycerides; its deficiency is associated with reduced atherosclerosis. Mixed dyslipidemia, characterized by elevated triglyceride and apoC-III levels and low HDL cholesterol level, with or without elevated LDL cholesterol, increases cardiovascular disease risk and is commonly treated with combined statin and fibrate therapy. We sought to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with apoC-III level response to combination therapy with statins and fenofibric acid (FA) in individuals with mixed dyslipidemia. Participants (n = 1,250) in a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, active-controlled study examining response to FA alone and in combination with statin were genotyped …

Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding And Paroxetine Use: Two Case Reports, Hilario Blasco-Fontecilla, Jose De Leon Mar 2012

Lower Gastrointestinal Bleeding And Paroxetine Use: Two Case Reports, Hilario Blasco-Fontecilla, Jose De Leon

Psychiatry Faculty Publications

Paroxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), and an effective long-term treatment for social anxiety and major depression. SSRIs in general, and paroxetine in particular, were described as associated with depletion of serotonin in platelets. Serotonin is involved in platelet aggregation, and the association of bleeding and SSRI use was suggested two decades ago. In the last few years, some reviews have confirmed that initial fear. In contrast with aspirin, SSRIs seem to be related to non-ulcer, non-variceal gastrointestinal bleeds. SSRIs are usually associated with upper gastrointestinal bleeding but there is surprisingly little literature on lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB) …

Equity, Evidence & Ethics: Assessing The Implications Of Outdoor Smoke-Free Policies For Vulnerable Populations, Natasha Jategaonkar, Ann Pederson, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Wendy Rice, Phoebe M. Long, Joan L. Bottorff, Natalie Hemsing, Lorraine Greaves

Nursing Presentations

Smoke-free policies in outdoor settings are becoming increasingly common. Economic and social conditions tend to influence tobacco use patterns as well as exposure to secondhand smoke. Thus, active and passive smoking are both health equity and social justice concerns.

Smoking on the Margins is a multi-component,mixed-methods project that applies an ethical framework to outdoor smoke-free policies in order to identify both concerns and opportunities to promote health and health equity.

Justification for smoke-free policies

Smoke-free spaces are primarily justified on the basis of three goals:

1) Reducing exposure to secondhand smoke;

2) Encouraging people to quit smoking; and

3) Preventing …

Outcomes Of A Tailored Smoking Cessation Program For Individuals With A Substance Use And/Or Psychiatric Disorder, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Milan Khara Mar 2012

Outcomes Of A Tailored Smoking Cessation Program For Individuals With A Substance Use And/Or Psychiatric Disorder, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Milan Khara

Nursing Presentations

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Although there has been a steady decline in the overall smoking prevalence in North America during the last decade some subsets of the population continue to smoke at high rates, particularly individuals with a history of substance use disorders (SUD) and/or psychiatric disorders (PD). Studies suggest that individuals with SUD’s and PD’s often have disproportionately higher smoking-related mortality. Studies further suggest that in clinical samples an estimated 75% of individuals with PD and up to 90% of individuals with PD concurrently smoke. This high prevalence of smoking among …

The Economic, Institutional, And Political Determinants Of Public Health Delivery System Structures, Richard C. Ingram, F. Douglas Scutchfield, Glen P. Mays, Michelyn W. Bhandari

Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVES: A typology of local public health systems was recently introduced, and a large degree of structural transformation over time was discovered in the systems analyzed. We present a qualitative exploration of the factors that determine variation and change in the seven structural configurations that comprise the local public health delivery system typology.

METHODS: We applied a 10-item semistructured telephone interview protocol to representatives from the local health agency in two randomly selected systems from each configuration--one that had maintained configuration over time and one that had changed configuration over time. We assessed the interviews for patterns of variation between …

The Significance Of Race For Neighborhood Social Cohesion: Perceived Difficulty Of Collective Action In Majority Black Neighborhoods, Tamara Leech, Tara Hobson-Prater Mar 2012

The Significance Of Race For Neighborhood Social Cohesion: Perceived Difficulty Of Collective Action In Majority Black Neighborhoods, Tamara Leech, Tara Hobson-Prater

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

This article explores William Julius Wilson's contentions about community cultural traits by examining racial differences in middle class neighborhoods' levels of social cohesion. Specifically, we explore the perceived difficulty of these actions-as opposed to general pessimism about their outcomes-as a potential explanation for low levels of instrumental collective action in Black middle class neighborhoods. Our results indicate that, regardless of other neighborhood factors, majority Black neighborhoods have low levels of social cohesion. We also find that this racial disparity is statistically explained by shared perceptions about the amount of effort required to engage in group action in different neighborhoods. These …

Three female mongrel dogs were cytologically diagnosed as transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) and had clinically developed resistance to vincristine treatment. One dog was treated with four treatments of 10,000 IU/m2 body surface area of L-asparaginase combined with 0.025 mg/kg body weight of vincristine sulfate every two weeks while this combination was administered to the others once a week for four weeks and only vincristine sulfate once a week for four treatments. Both treatments resulted in a complete remission. Side effects such as gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, depression, and decrease in appetite were observed in the dogs administered with the later protocol. …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Streptococcal infection is a major problem in intensive tilapia farming. This study was conducted to investigate the antimicrobial activity of mucilage, distilled water- and 70% methanol-crude extract from Butea superba Roxb. against Streptococcal bacteria. The antimicrobial activity using disc diffusion assay showed that B. superba Roxb. had a broad antimicrobial range against twelve isolates of streptococcal bacteria: Streptococcus iniae (n=2) and Streptococcus agalactiae (n=10). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the 70% methanol-crude extract varied between 128 and 512 µg/ml depending on the tested streptococcal strains. Mucilage has a higher potency in the inhibition of streptococcal bacteria when compared with …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Bats are the reservoir hosts for several Paramyxoviruses including two serious zoonotic viruses, Hendra virus and Nipah virus which are responsible for fatal infections in animals and humans. These two viruses are sufficiently different from previously described Paramyxoviruses and are included in a new genus, Henipavirus. We report here a survey of cave-dwelling, insectivorous bats in Thailand for the presence of henipaviruses. Pooled urine samples were collected in nine caves inhabited by six different bat species in the northern (Chiangmai and Nakornsawan) and southern (Songkla and Satoon) provinces of Thailand. A reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) assay using henipavirus-specific primers derived …
