Relationship Of Metabolic Costs Of Aquatic Treadmill Versus Land Treadmill Running, Sarah Squires Blackwell May 2012

Relationship Of Metabolic Costs Of Aquatic Treadmill Versus Land Treadmill Running, Sarah Squires Blackwell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Running injuries are common, usually causing athletes to cease or significantly reduce participation in a particular sport. The recent development of aquatic treadmills (ATM), an alternative to land treadmill (LTM) running, provides another option. The use of an ATM provides an individual the opportunity to run in an environment that creates much lower impact or ground contact forces compared to what is experienced on land. Forces 2-3 times that of a person’s body weight may be experienced on land while in water these forces are about 1 times body weight. This cumulative reduction in force lowers the risk of overuse …

The Culture Of Risk, Pain, And Injury Among Certified Athletic Trainers, Anastasia Elizabeth Nemec May 2012

The Culture Of Risk, Pain, And Injury Among Certified Athletic Trainers, Anastasia Elizabeth Nemec

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

INTRODUCTION: Athletes who participate in sport experience the risk of pain and injury. In today’s sports culture, playing with pain and injury has been normalized, which can leave athletes with severe chronic injury, incessant pain, and potential irreversible damage. Certified athletic trainers (ATCs) uphold a professional responsibility to manage injuries and care for the health of athletes under their attention. According to Nixon (1992), ATCs are members of a social network found in sport, called a “sportsnet.” Nixon has blamed sportsnet members, including ATCs, for the normalization of injury in sport - a charge that contradicts ATCs’ standards of practice …

Using Negative Feedback To Guide Behavior: Impairments On The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test Relates To Psychosis, Sally Barney

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

There is increasing controversy regarding the distinction between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder as separate diagnostic categories because these disorders share many features in common. These and other findings suggest that bipolar disorder and schizophrenia may be better conceptualized along a continuum or within more homogeneous subsets of affective, psychotic, and mixed symptomatology.

Dopamine dysregulation has been found in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, particularly those that experience psychosis during the acute phases of their bipolar illness. Dopamine has been found to play a role in reward and reward learning. Recently, research has found that individuals with schizophrenia experience deficits in reward …

A Qualitative Descriptive Study Of The Work Of Nurses In Interventional Radiology, Brenda Naef Boone Phd May 2012

A Qualitative Descriptive Study Of The Work Of Nurses In Interventional Radiology, Brenda Naef Boone Phd

Dissertations

This dissertation study explored the work of nurses in interventional radiology. Interventional radiology (IR) is an emerging field of practice in health care. More and more procedures that were historically done in the operating room are being performed in IR. This has led to higher acuity patients and an increased need for specialized nursing care. The work of nurses in this area of practice is not well described and as such can lead to a lack of understanding of nursing involved in high tech low touch areas. This qualitative descriptive research study was conducted to shed light on this under …

Pain Management In Triage And Reducing Percentage Of Left Without Being Seen In An Overcrowded Ed, Christina Ballejos-Campos Phd May 2012

Pain Management In Triage And Reducing Percentage Of Left Without Being Seen In An Overcrowded Ed, Christina Ballejos-Campos Phd

Dissertations

Although in most emergency rooms, the patient is seen first by a highly trained triage nurse, the ED physician is trained to determine if the patient can safely leave the ED prior to in-depth exam, treatment and diagnosis. The goal is to keep the left without being seen by a physician percentage low, since a high number would indicate poor quality, additionally patients who present with pain, and then leave the ED prior to being seen can pose a greater risk. This study examined the association of nurse-initiated triage pain protocol on the LWOBS percentage rate of patients who present …

Neocortical Layer 4 To Layer 2/3 Sensory Information Processing Investigated With Digital-Light-Projection Neuronal Photostimulation, Jason Paul Jerome

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The mammalian brain forms neuronal networks and microcircuits with cell-type- and anatomical-specific synaptic connections. Despite great advances in elucidating the cellular physiology of the nervous system, little is known about the computational processes occurring at the level of neuronal microcircuits. Much success has been reported in describing the synaptic input patterns of many brain regions and cell types using photostimulation systems; however, these systems are severely limited in their ability to study the integration of synaptic input from multiple synchronous or temporally correlated presynaptic locations. Here we describe a system that allows the generation of arbitrary 2-D stimulus patterns with …

Contribution Of The Unfolded Protein Response To Vegf Expression, Ethel Rose Pereira May 2012

Contribution Of The Unfolded Protein Response To Vegf Expression, Ethel Rose Pereira

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Tumor cells experience a limiting microenvironment due to inadequate vascularization that can affect the normal functioning of intracellular organelles. In the case of the endoplasmic reticulum, the limiting environment is further exacerbated by the high metabolic demands of the tumor cells, which together interfere with the proper maturation of nascent proteins synthesized there. The resultant accumulation of unfolded proteins activates a signal transduction pathway known as the Unfolded Protein Response, which serves primarily to protect the cell during stress and helps restore homeostasis to this organelle. As tumors expand resulting in regions that are a greater distance from functional blood …

Oropharyngeal Airway Volume Following Orthodontic Treatment: Premolar Extraction Versus Non-Extraction, Thomas Patrick Shannon

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Orthodontic correction of tooth size versus arch size discrepancy (TSASD) can be achieved with two distinct methods of treatment. The first involves the extraction of teeth to gain the space needed for tooth alignment. The second relies on arch expansion to gain the space needed for correction. In recent decades, arguments for and against the extraction of teeth for orthodontic purposes have become increasingly important, particularly in regards to oropharyngeal airway size. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a decrease in oropharyngeal dimensions following the extraction of four premolars and subsequent orthodontic therapy. Methods: …

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Background: Persons with a severe mental illness (SMI) prematurely lose up to 25 years of life when compared to the general population. This patient population has increased morbidity and mortality due to higher than normal rates of obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Treatment of SMI often includes the use of atypical antipsychotic (AA) medication which has been associated with the development of cardiometabolic illnesses. In response to the higher rates of co-morbid, chronic physical illness, monitoring guidelines for cardiometabolic illness have been published. Despite these guidelines, screening rates for cardiometabolic illness in this population remain low. Neither community mental …

Development Of Co-Processed Plasticized Cellulose Acetate For Sustained Release Matrix Tablets, Yinqi Zhou May 2012

Development Of Co-Processed Plasticized Cellulose Acetate For Sustained Release Matrix Tablets, Yinqi Zhou

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Cellulose Acetate (CA) is a polymer extensively used in pharmaceutical applications. Because of the hydrophobic nature and good film properties of CA, it is a good polymer candidate for sustained release matrix tablets. Sustained release matrix tablets of cellulose acetate can be prepared by direct compression or wet granulation methods. However, previous studies showed that a large amount of CA was required to achieve the desired sustained release profile for a sparingly soluble drug and it was difficult to formulate a highly water soluble drug by using CA as the retarding agent. Some studies concluded that CA is very sensitive …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project is focused on determining the contributions of particular genetic loci to low sperm mobility in the chicken. Sperm mobility has been shown to be a major determinant of male fertility in broiler breeders. A whole genome SNP scan identified chromosomal regions (QTLs) that control sperm mobility. I used microsatellites from 4 chromosomal regions ( 15.151 on chromosome 6, 12.435 on chromosome Z, 12.341 on chromosome Z, and 17.214 on chromosome Z) to determine the association of these regions with sperm mobility in experimental lines divergently selected for mobility phenotype. Determination of the genetics underlying sperm mobility will identify …

Hp Turns 17: T Helper 17 Cell Response During Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (Hp) And Factors Controlling It, Hossam Abdelsamed May 2012

Hp Turns 17: T Helper 17 Cell Response During Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (Hp) And Factors Controlling It, Hossam Abdelsamed

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (HP) is an interstitial lung disease caused by repeated inhalation of a wide range of environmental antigens. It is characterized by alveolitis, granuloma formation, and fibrosis. Since HP is a T cell-mediated disease, it is important to determine the type of T cell response associated with granuloma formation and the factors that control this response. We hypothesized that HP is associated with a predominant Th17 cell response where both T-bet and TLRs 2 and 9 are controlling T cell response during HP. The results demonstrated a predominant Th17 response associated with granuloma formation in the lungs of C57BL/6J …

Acetaldehyde And Epithelial Junctions: Role Of Pp2a And Occludin Phosphorylation, Mitzi Dunagan May 2012

Acetaldehyde And Epithelial Junctions: Role Of Pp2a And Occludin Phosphorylation, Mitzi Dunagan

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Chronic alcohol consumption causes health problems including cancers, liver damage, and cirrhosis. These problems are exacerbated by endotoxins from the bacterial population of the colon, which can enter the bloodstream when gastrointestinal tight junctions, protein complexes that prevent paracellular passage of molecules, are compromised. The mechanisms of this barrier disruption are the subject of current study.

Acetaldehyde, produced as a result of ethanol breakdown by intestinal microflora as well as intestinal epithelia, is a known carcinogen. It compromises the barrier function of intestinal epithelial cells by causing irregularities in the phosphorylation of tight junction proteins. It also reacts with proteins, lipids, …

The Molecular Basis Of Fitness And Transmissibility Of Neuraminidase Inhibitor Resistant Influenza A Viruses, Susu Duan

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Neuraminidase (NA) inhibitors including oral oseltamivir and inhaled zanamivir are among the first line of defense against influenza virus infection. Development of resistance to NA inhibitors is a huge drawback for limited options for the control of influenza. During the first decade of NA inhibitor use, the detection rates of resistance to both NA inhibitors had remained low in circulating influenza viruses. However, the 2008~2009 season was marked by a radical increase of prevalence of oseltamvir resistance from <1% to >90% in worldwide surveillance in less than a year. The resistance was solely linked to NA H275Y variants of seasonal H1N1 viruses, …
