The ability of those with psychiatric disabilities to vote is an important activity impacted by competency issues and potentially overlooked by social workers. The purpose of this article is to assist social workers in making informed decisions about preserving and supporting voter participation among those with psychiatric disabilities. Common issues regarding the voting rights of individuals with psychiatric disabilities within the legal system and other systems of interest to social workers are explored.

This study tests the geographic drift hypothesis that the negative SES-MI correlation results from individuals first developing conditions such as schizophrenia and then moving frequently because of their disability to low income and urban areas, and to neighborhoods with high concentrations of SMI persons. This is a secondary analysis of hospital records of 1,667,956 individuals in Massachusetts, USA, between 1994 and 2000. It employs a longitudinal cohort design and techniques of multi-level modeling. Downward geographic drift of those with schizophrenia was found to be small, but greater than other groups examined. The small level of drift was best explained by …

A 49-year old female presented with severe heart failure with end-organ dysfunction and was placed on veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as a bridge to a decision for end-organ recovery. While on ECMO, the patient developed massive haemoptysis after a Swan-Ganz catheter manipulation. The haemoptysis was not controllable by conventional methods including bronchoscopy with cold saline and epinephrine lavage, bronchial blocker or angiography. The endotracheal tube was clamped to provide tamponade and the patient relied on full ECMO support for 36 h. After the haemoptysis resolved, the endotracheal tube was unclamped. Contamination of the environment with Nanosilver particles (AgNPs) has caused considerable concern. Atpresent there is little information of AgNPs toxicity, especially in aquatic environments. The purpose of this studywas to evaluate toxic effects of AgNPs on Zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryonic development. Toxicity test of AgNPs onthe embryos was conducted in concentration of 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 5 μg/ml. Standard water was used as control.Observation for mortality, morphological and functional abnormalities at 4, 24, 48 and 72 hours post fertilization (hpf)were performed. Semen collection by an electroejaculator was studied in black marsh turtles. High responses were recordedwhen electrical probe was inserted to the depth of 5.9±0.1 cm from the anus or 5.2±0.2 cm from posterior tip of thecarapace. The depth position was approximately the center of the second carapace from the rear. The intensity ofresponses increased with increasing voltage and reached a plateau at 7.0 volts. The depth of the probe inserted toyield highest responses had higher relationship with carapace length when measured against the anus (r= 0.81, p=0.0088) than the posterior end of carapace (r= 0.06, p= 0.8825). The safety of ethanolic extract from the seeds of Moringa oleifera was evaluated for its oral toxicity by acute toxicity test and subchronic toxicity study in experimental animals. The acute toxicity test in mice showed that the extract at doses ranging from 5.1 to 10.0 g/kg caused toxic signs and dose dependent mortality. Oral administration of the extract in rats at doses of 100, 500 and 1000 mg/kg/day for 90 consecutive days revealed that male rats treated with the extract at 1000 mg/kg had a significant decrease in RBC but this alteration was within rats reference range. Veno-venous and veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy is used to support the cardiac and pulmonary systems in the setting of acute failure. Maintaining adequate ECMO flow is crucial for the success of the therapy. Sudden decrease in venous return on ECMO has multiple etiologies, such as intravascular hypovolemia, malposition or kink of the venous cannula, suction occlusion of a cannula, and venous or arterial thrombi. Pathology within the chest, including pneumothorax, tension hemothorax and pericardial tamponade, may also decrease the ECMO flow because of compression of the cannula and decreased atrial volume. Objective: To assess communication and interpersonal skills (CIS) of radiology residents through faculty and standardised patients (SP).

Methods: In this day-long objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) in January 2009, 42 radiology residents took part at six stations in Karachi, each with a standardised patient and a faculty evaluator. Each encounter lasted 15 minutes followed by independent assessments of the residents by both the evaluators.

In this issue of the Journal, Jindal and colleagues compellingly document the high disease burden for asthma and chronic bronchitis in India.1 With a comprehensive survey of 169 575 individuals from 23 sites across 12 centres, they estimate that one or more respiratory symptoms were present in 8.5% of individuals. The national burden of asthma and chronic bronchitis is estimated at 17.23 million and 14.84 million, respectively. In absolute terms, these are not small numbers. The unfortunate reality, however, is that the brunt of this disease burden is likely disproportionately borne by the economically impoverished and the socially disenfranchised. The …

Evarcha culicivora, an East African jumping spider (Salticidae), is the only spider for which there is evidence of innate olfactory affinity for particular plant species. Evarcha culicivora also actively chooses as preferred prey the females of Anopheles mosquitoes, and both sexes of Anopheles are known to visit plants for nectar meals. Here, we identified compounds present in the headspace of one of these species in Kenya, Lantana camara, and then used 11 of these compounds in olfactometer experiments. Our findings show that three terpenes [(E)-β-caryophyllene, α-humulene and 1,8 cineole] can be discriminated by, and are salient to, E. culicivora. The …

Purpose: To determine the intra-tester reliability of clinical measurements that assess five components related to core stability: strength, endurance, flexibility, motor control, and function. Methods: Participants were 15 college-aged males who had not suffered any orthopedic injury in the past year. Core strength measurements included eight isometric tests and a sit-up test. The four core endurance tests were the trunk flexor test, trunk extensor test, and bilateral side bridge tests. This study reports the side effects in dogs from swimming in a chlorinated swimming pool. Data werecollected from September 2008 until April 2012. A total of 412 dogs (male= 219 and female= 193), aged 38±30 months,served as the subjects. The dogs were divided into four groups based on the aims of swimming: entertainment (n=152), weight reduction (n= 53), rehabilitation after orthopedic surgery (n= 81), and rehabilitation for muscle and jointdisease (n= 126). The data were recorded for five separate swimming times. At first, some dogs (29.13%) showedoverexcitement and/or fear, but this percentage decreased with increased swimming frequency. This study was undertaken to describe the gross anatomy, histology and ultrastructural morphology of thedouc langur term placenta by light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. The primary disc of bidiscoidalplacenta was separated to 4-6 small cotyledonary subdivisions and was attached by an umbilical cord. The clinical outcome of PCSO-524 application in the treatment of canine osteoarthritis and spinal disorderwas studied at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, Chulalongkorn University. Eighty-four dogs were included inour study. Thirty-one dogs showed signs of osteoarthritis (OA) in both hip joints and shoulder joints; 33 dogs had OAin stifle joints from cranial cruciate ligament rupture; and 20 dogs had neurological signs of the cauda equinasyndrome. Granulomas caused by Mycobacterium Tuberculosis have been observed at autopsy in the heart, pre-dominantly in the myocardium and endocardium, but rarely involving the coronary vessels and valvular structures.
