Psychological Behaviorism Theory Of Bipolar Disorder, Helmut P.R. Riedel, Elaine M. Heiby, Stephen Kopetskie
Psychological Behaviorism Theory Of Bipolar Disorder, Helmut P.R. Riedel, Elaine M. Heiby, Stephen Kopetskie
The Psychological Record
This review addresses the etiology of bipolar disorder and
presents the literature within a psychological behaviorism
framework (Staats, 1996; Staats & Heiby, 1985). The proposed
theory attempts to provide an integrative developmental approach
that is grounded in established behavioral principles. The bipolar
theory posits 15 hypotheses based on past and concurrent
biological and situational factors as well as their interactions with
an individual's basic behavioral repertoires. Implications for
subclassification and treatment research are noted.
The Reliability And Validity Of A Simulated Airway Model That Quantifies Physical Forces Exerted During Endotracheal Intubation In A Clinically Demanding Scenario, Robert Matthews
Theses and Dissertations
The main purpose of this research was the development of an experimental model that allows for the assessment of pressure and thereby, the forces associated with interventions related to airway management. The foundation of this research was to develop, and assess the validity and reliability, of a method of quantifying the force experienced by a patient during airway management. Following IRB approval and the development of a unique simulation model that employs transducers situated in key anatomical locations to determine forces, a multivariate profile analysis with covariate of experience using a MANCOVA approach was conducted. The statistical design consisted of …

Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy In A Hiv-Negative Patient With Small Lymphocytic Leukemia Following Treatment With Rituximab., Subhankar Chakraborty, Stefano R. Tarantolo, John Treves, David Sambol, Ralph J. Hauke, Surinder K. Batra
Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
We describe a case of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) caused by infection with the human polyomavirus JC virus in a patient with B-cell small lymphocytic leukemia who was treated with rituximab. The first symptoms of PML appeared immediately following the last of five cycles of rituximab, cyclophosphamide and pentostatin. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed changes consistent with PML, although JC virus DNA was not detected by polymerase chain reaction assay of the cerebrospinal fluid. A stereotactic biopsy of the brain showed histological changes consistent with PML, while electron microscopy revealed JC virus particles attached to the nuclei of astrocytes. The patient …
Evaluation Of Xmx/2l-Mil Virtual Impactor Performance And Capture And Retention Of Aerosol Particles In Two Different Collection Media, Jon E. Black
Theses and Dissertations
The United States Air Force uses the XMX/2L-MIL (XMX) high volume air sampler to collect samples for biological analysis. The XMX uses a virtual impactor to concentrate particles 1.0 to 10 μm in size into a secondary flow prior to sample collection using a liquid impinger in a collection tube. There are no known published studies regarding virtual impactor inter-instrument variability, effect of reducing the secondary flow on particle concentration, or capture and retention efficiency (CRE) of particles in the collection media performance characteristics when using the XMX. These performance characteristics were evaluated by lofting test aerosols of Arizona Road …
Retrospective Geospatial Modeling Of Pm10 Exposures From Open Burning At Joint Base Balad, Iraq, John P. Rinker
Retrospective Geospatial Modeling Of Pm10 Exposures From Open Burning At Joint Base Balad, Iraq, John P. Rinker
Theses and Dissertations
Predicting, determining, and linking theater-related source-specific exposures to health effects has proven difficult. The purpose of this research is to delineate retrospective exposure zones using spatially interpolated particulate air sampling point data from Joint Base Balad, create burn pit exposure isopleths from dispersion model outputs, and merge into a combined exposure model in GIS. Interpolated monitoring results and dispersion modeled results were combined to compare modeled exposures across base. Burn pit contribution to total PM10 was also modeled. The combined dispersion and interpolation map showed elevated concentrations within a 1 kilometer buffer of the burn pit. Buildings within this area …
Characterization Of Graphite Composite Material Particulates From Usaf Aircraft Maintenance Operations, Richard E. Yon
Characterization Of Graphite Composite Material Particulates From Usaf Aircraft Maintenance Operations, Richard E. Yon
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the benefits of their material properties, advanced composite materials (ACM) are increasingly being used as structural components on aircraft, especially within the United States Air Force. As a result, the potential exists for occupational exposures to structural maintenance employees while repairing and fabricating aircraft components. Two field studies were conducted for this thesis in order to characterize ACM aerosol size distribution, determine the feasibility of utilizing direct reading instruments (DRIs) in the field, and ensure workers are protected with adequate controls. In order to characterize exposure, traditional integrated air sampling and DRIs were positioned together near an ACM …

Combating Biological Terrorism From Imported Food, Jeffrey S. Nelson
Combating Biological Terrorism From Imported Food, Jeffrey S. Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
There is a threat that a terrorist or terrorist organization will use access to the US food supply to kill or sicken Americans by contaminating imported food products from Mexico. The food that Americans eat is coming more and more often from foreign countries such as Mexico. Foodborne diseases infect nearly fifty million people in the US each year, resulting in over three thousand deaths. There are many terrorist organizations that would like to deliberately contaminate American food. Drug cartels and terrorist organizations currently operate in Mexico, one of the leading food importers into the US. The purpose of this …
Development Of Optimized Guidelines For Therapeutic Strategies For Organophosphate Poisoning, Craig A. Holder
Development Of Optimized Guidelines For Therapeutic Strategies For Organophosphate Poisoning, Craig A. Holder
Theses and Dissertations
Organophosphates such as nerve agents have been used on several occasions in the past to inflict harm upon military and civilian populations in various parts of the world. The threat of these chemicals use against the military and civilians continues today, and the suggested treatment guidelines available may be ineffective or possibly cause harm. The guidelines investigated during the research presented here all included the use of two antidotes, atropine and oxime. The efficacy of oximes has been questioned and it has been suggested that they may cause harm to the patient. Both atropine and oxime are issued to military …
A Primary Care Workload Production Model For Estimating Relative Value Unit Output, Rachel G. Murphy
A Primary Care Workload Production Model For Estimating Relative Value Unit Output, Rachel G. Murphy
Theses and Dissertations
Health care costs have grown to unsustainable levels nationally and within the Department of Defense. Military health care costs have historically been difficult to isolate, causing budget cuts to be the vehicle for cost control. Maximum efficiency, therefore, is the goal in order to show improvement. With the Air Force’s new preventive health plan, they aim to drive a long-term posture for cost reduction through prevention. This research effort aimed to develop a tool to assist in future efforts to understand and improve efficiency in workload output, and whether a relationship exists between patient workload demand and the per-encounter variables …

Non-Identity-Mediated Crispr-Bacteriophage Interaction Mediated Via The Csy And Cas3 Proteins, Kyle C. Cady, George A. O'Toole
Dartmouth Scholarship
Studies of the Escherichia, Neisseria, Thermotoga, and Mycobacteria clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR) subtypes have resulted in a model whereby CRISPRs function as a defense system against bacteriophage infection and conjugative plasmid transfer. In contrast, we previously showed that the Yersinia-subtype CRISPR region of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain UCBPP-PA14 plays no detectable role in viral immunity but instead is required for bacteriophage DMS3-dependent inhibition of biofilm formation by P. aeruginosa. The goal of this study is to define the components of the Yersinia-subtype CRISPR region required to mediate this bacteriophage-host interaction. We show that the Yersinia-subtype-specific CRISPR-associated (Cas) proteins …

Defining the contribution of acetylcholine to specific behaviors has been challenging, mainly because of the difficulty in generating suitable animal models of cholinergic dysfunction. We have recently shown that, by targeting the vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT) gene, it is possible to generate genetically modified mice with cholinergic deficiency. Here we describe novel VAChT mutant lines. VAChT gene is embedded within the first intron of the choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) gene, which provides a unique arrangement and regulation for these two genes. We generated a VAChT allele that is flanked by loxP sequences and carries the resistance cassette placed in a ChAT …

Eps15 Homology Domain-containing 3 (EHD3), a member of the EHD protein family that regulates endocytic recycling, is the first protein reported to be specifically expressed in the glomerular endothelium in the kidney; therefore we generated Ehd3(-/-) mice and assessed renal development and pathology. Ehd3(-/-) animals showed no overt defects, and exhibited no proteinuria or glomerular pathology. However, as the expression of EHD4, a related family member, was elevated in the glomerular endothelium of Ehd3(-/-) mice and suggested functional compensation, we generated and analyzed Ehd3(-/-); Ehd4(-/-) mice. These mice were smaller, possessed smaller and paler kidneys, were proteinuric and died between …

BACKGROUND: During DNA replication or repair, disease-associated (CAG)n/(CTG)n expansion can result from formation of hairpin structures in the repeat tract of the newly synthesized or nicked DNA strand. Recent studies identified a nick-directed (CAG)n/(CTG)n hairpin repair (HPR) system that removes (CAG)n/(CTG)n hairpins from human cells via endonucleolytic incisions. Because the process is highly similar to the mechanism by which XPG and XPF endonucleases remove bulky DNA lesions during nucleotide excision repair, we assessed the potential role of XPG in conducting (CAG)n/(CTG)n HPR.
RESULTS: To determine if the XPG endonuclease is involved in (CAG)n/(CTG)n hairpin removal, two XPG-deficient cell lines (GM16024 …

Chloroquine Treatment Of Arpe-19 Cells Leads To Lysosome Dilation And Intracellular Lipid Accumulation: Possible Implications Of Lysosomal Dysfunction In Macular Degeneration, Patrick M. Chen, Zoë J. Gombart, Jeff W. Chen
Dartmouth Scholarship
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in elderly people over 60. The pathogenesis is still unclear. It has been suggested that lysosomal stress may lead to drusen formation, a biomarker of AMD. In this study, ARPE-19 cells were treated with chloroquine to inhibit lysosomal function. Chloroquine-treated ARPE-19 cells demonstrate a marked increase in vacuolation and dense intracellular debris. These are identified as chloroquine-dilated lysosomes and lipid bodies with LAMP-2 and LipidTOX co-localization, respectively. Dilation is an indicator of lysosomal dysfunction. Chloroquine disrupts uptake of exogenously applied rhodamine-labeled dextran by these cells. This suggests a disruption …

Proteomic Assessment Of A Cell Model Of Spinal Muscular Atrophy., Chia-Yen Wu, Dosh Whye, Lisa Glazewski, Leila Choe, Douglas Kerr, Kelvin H Lee, Robert W Mason, Wenlan Wang
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Deletion or mutation(s) of the survival motor neuron 1 (SMN1) gene causes spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a neuromuscular disease characterized by spinal motor neuron death and muscle paralysis. Complete loss of the SMN protein is embryonically lethal, yet reduced levels of this protein result in selective death of motor neurons. Why motor neurons are specifically targeted by SMN deficiency remains to be determined. In this study, embryonic stem (ES) cells derived from a severe SMA mouse model were differentiated into motor neurons in vitro by addition of retinoic acid and sonic hedgehog agonist. Proteomic and western blot analyses were …

Misdiagnosis Of Lateral Periodontal Cysts: A Retrospective Study, Piper Larson, John Huebner, Nagamani Narayana
Posters and Presentations: College of Dentistry
A total of 239 cases were retrieved from the files of the UNMC College of Dentistry oral biopsy service which had lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) as a clinical or a histological diagnosis. Of these, 178 were submitted with a clinical differential diagnosis that included LPC. Upon histological examination only 26 (11%) of those were in fact LPC. Only 21(9%) of the 51 cases diagnosed histologically met the criteria for LPC. Within those 239 cases, 120(50%) cases were inflammatory cysts, 31(13%) of the samples were determined to be keratocystic odontogenic tumors (odontogenic keratocysts). Conclusion: The LPC is frequently misdiagnosed due to …

The Effects Of The Use Of A Humanoid Robot On Social Engagement In Two Children With Autism, Aersta Kayleen Acerson
The Effects Of The Use Of A Humanoid Robot On Social Engagement In Two Children With Autism, Aersta Kayleen Acerson
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the effects of intervention using a robot on the social interactions of two children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Robots have been shown to facilitate human-robot interaction in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, yet research has not fully investigated the use of robots to enhance interactions between children with ASD and human conversational partners. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of a low-dose intervention procedure using a robot to increase social engagement between each child and his communication partner. Although variable, results were promising and suggested that additional investigation is warranted.

Differential Effects Of Dopaminergic Therapies On Dorsal And Ventral Striatum In Parkinson's Disease: Implications For Cognitive Function., Penny A Macdonald, Oury Monchi
Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
Cognitive abnormalities are a feature of Parkinson's disease (PD). Unlike motor symptoms that are clearly improved by dopaminergic therapy, the effect of dopamine replacement on cognition seems paradoxical. Some cognitive functions are improved whereas others are unaltered or even hindered. Our aim was to understand the effect of dopamine replacement therapy on various aspects of cognition. Whereas dorsal striatum receives dopamine input from the substantia nigra (SN), ventral striatum is innervated by dopamine-producing cells in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). In PD, degeneration of SN is substantially greater than cell loss in VTA and hence dopamine-deficiency is significantly greater in …

Staphylococcus aureus RN4220, a cloning intermediate, is sometimes used in virulence, resistance, and metabolic studies. Using whole-genome sequencing, we showed that RN4220 differs from NCTC8325 and contains a number of genetic polymorphisms that affect both virulence and general fitness, implying a need for caution in using this strain for such studies.
