INTRODUCTION: During repair for duodenal atresia, it has been emphasized that inspection of the small bowel to identify a second atresia is required. The laparoscopic approach for repair of duodenal atresia has been criticized for its limitation to perform this step. Given that duodenal atresia and jejunoileal atresias do not share common embryologic origins, we question the validity of this concern. Therefore, we conducted a multicenter retrospective review of duodenal atresia patients to quantify the incidence of jejunoileal atresia in this population.

New research highlights an unexpected structural overlap between enzymes involved in this process and those involved in the biosynthesis of cyclodipeptides, an important class of bioactive molecules.

Dental education in Europe faces enormous challenges. One deals with the admission to dental school. Although admission procedures vary considerably across Europe, a characteristic of some systems is that the same procedure is used across students who will ultimately pursue different majors (medical or dental). This is based on the assumptions that there is no significant difference in these students' scores and that the requirements for medicine and dentistry are equal. Stroke is the most common cause of acquired epilepsy in persons 35 and older. The massive increase in extracellular glutamate during stroke causes a cascade of intracellular events that can lead to cell death or the molecular changes that initiate the development of epilepsy. In addition, many studies point to a modulatory role of the endocannabinoid system in controlling seizures. Animal models of stroke induced acquired epilepsy have been difficult to develop. Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is widely used in rehabilitation and sport training, and alternating current and pulsed current EMS are commonly used. However, no systematic comparison between alternating and pulsed current EMS has been made in the previous studies. The main aim of this research was to compare acute physiological responses between the alternating and pulsed current EMS. The secondary purpose of the research was to investigate further muscle damage induced by EMS-evoked isometric contractions. Three experimental studies were conducted in the thesis project together with literature review about EMS.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of paediatric tuberculosis prevention, by reevaluation factors in children exposed to tuberculosis from less privileged strata of Pakistan.

METHODS: This cross sectional descriptive study was conducted at National Institute of Child Health, from January 2004 to December 2005. Paediatric patients under 15 years of either gender, diagnosed with active tuberculosis were enrolled. Interviews were conducted with parents regarding common preventive measures and factors advocating tuberculosis spread. Later factors leading to non-compliance to safety recommendations were also evaluated.

An eleven-year-old boy presented with one month's history of fever and weight loss. He was diagnosed with Acute Mycloid Leukemia (AML-M2). During treatment he developed recurrent infections with neutropenia requiring prolonged antibiotics and subsequently developed invasive aspergillosis. He was treated with amphotericin B and Voriconazole. This case shows the efficacy and safety of combined antifungal therapy, including voriconazole, for invasive aspergillosis complicating AML.

Methods based on Rate Distortion theory have been successfully used to cluster stimuli and neural responses in order to study neural codes at a level of detail supported by the amount of available data. They approximate the joint stimulus-response distribution by quantizing paired stimulus-response observations into smaller reproductions of the stimulus and response spaces. An optimal quantization is found by maximizing an information-theoretic cost function subject to both equality and inequality constraints, in hundreds to thousands of dimensions. BACKGROUND: Ethanol is a tumor promoter. Both epidemiological and experimental studies suggest that ethanol may enhance the metastasis of breast cancer cells. We have previously demonstrated that ethanol increased the migration/invasion of breast cancer cells expressing high levels of ErbB2. Amplification of ErbB2 is found in 20-30% of breast cancer patients and is associated with poor prognosis. We sought to identify agents that can prevent or ameliorate ethanol-induced invasion of breast cancer cells. Cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G), an anthocyanin present in many vegetables and fruits, is a potent natural antioxidant. The actual term “medical home” was introduced by the American Academy of Pediatrics, (AAP) in 1967, initially referring to a central location for archiving a child’s medical record. In 2002, the AAP expanded the medical home concept to include care characterized as accessible, continuous, comprehensive, patient-centered, coordinated, compassionate, and culturally effective. Evidence suggests interprofessional collaborative practice significantly improves patient outcomes, reduces mortality and enhances quality-of-life.1 Person-focused care demands collaboration among professions in a team approach to address multiple issues including illness, prevention, and health promotion activities. Key elements of successful implementation of interprofessional education are supported in Thomas Jefferson University’s Clinical Care Plan, Interprofessional Course (CCPIC) that includes increasing knowledge of the roles, responsibilities, and competencies of other health professions, collaborating in teams, recognizing the patient as the expert, and communicating effectively.

Circulation is an important delivery method for both natural and synthetic molecules, but microenvironment interactions, regulated by endothelial cells and critical to the molecule's fate, are difficult to interpret using traditional approaches. In this work, we analyzed and predicted growth factor capture under flow using computer modeling and a three-dimensional experimental approach that includes pertinent circulation characteristics such as pulsatile flow, competing binding interactions, and limited bioavailability. The Eastern Pennsylvania-Delaware Geriatric Education Center (EPaD GEC) mission is to provide interprofessional geriatric education in Northeast and Southeast Pennsylvania and Delaware. EPaD GEC consortium members (Thomas Jefferson University (TJU), Christiana Care Health System (CCHS), Marywood University (MU) and Philadelphia Senior Center (PSC)) are committed to improving the health and quality of life of older adults and their caregivers by translating new evidence and innovative practice models into practical curricula and programs. One of our educational goals is to develop a structured curriculum on geriatric topics that can be integrated into the educational curricula of multiple health disciplines.

To reach the Healthy People 2020 goal of eliminating health disparities, health and human services education must provide the knowledge and experience to understand the root causes of health disparities, as well as strategies to advance ongoing cultural and linguistic competence.

Conclusions: This interprofessional education session, employing a case-based videotape, was successful in illustrating to senior medical students the roles of OT and PT in patient management, and in increasing their awareness of the types of patient problems that would warrant referral for OT and PT services. The team is developing learning activities for future modules for medical students to teach the role of occupational and physical therapies in interprofessional health care.
