Peritoneal Dialysis-Related Peritonitis: An Analysis Of Risk Factors In Northeast Anatolia*, Mustafa Keleş, Ramazan Çeti̇nkaya, Abdullah Uyanik, Hami̇t Acemoğlu, Fatma Saatçi, Muhammet Hami̇dullah Uyanik

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Peritonitis is almost the most frequent complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). Besides being the most frequent reason of hospitalization, peritonitis is also the most important determining factor of mortality-morbidity and technique survival among PD patients. In this study, it was aimed to identify the risk factors for peritonitis in these patients. Materials and methods: In this clinical cohort, records of 218 patients were collected between January 1998 and December 2007. The patients’ demographic, clinical, and laboratory parameters were recorded. Results were analyzed to compare patients who never had peritonitis and patients with at least one episode of peritonitis. Independent predictors …

Serum Adenosine Deaminase Activity And The Total Antioxidant Capacity Of Plasma In Pulmonary Tuberculosis And Non-Tuberculosis Pulmonary Disease, Mohammad Naderi, Mohammad Hashemi, Ali Mehdizadeh, Hamid Mehrabifar, Hamid Reza Kouhpayeh, Hossein Ansari, Gholamreza Bahari, Saeid Ghavami

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate the level of serum adenosine deaminase (ADA) and the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), non-tuberculosis pulmonary disease (non-PTB) and healthy subjects. Materials and methods: Serum ADA activity was measured using the Giusti and Galanti method, and the total antioxidant capacity of plasma was determined by the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) test. Results: The serum ADA levels were significantly higher (P < 0.001) in pulmonary TB (PTB, 19.78 ± 7.09 U/L), as well as in non-PTB patients (14.78 ± 4.65 U/L) when compared to healthy controls (10.02 ± 1.99 U/L). The sensitivity and specificity were found to be 71.7% and 63.3%, respectively, in distinguishing PTB from non-PTB. In distinguishing PTB from healthy subjects, the sensitivity and specificity were 87% and 93.3%, respectively. The TAC was significantly lower in PTB (485.2 ± 190.0 µM) and non-PTB patients (588.3 ± 195.8 µM), when compared to the controls (784.3 ± 190.0 µM; P < 0.001). Plasma antioxidative activity decreased in PTB and non-PTB patients when compared to the controls. Conclusion: We concluded that serum ADA activity is not a useful test to differentiate pulmonary TB from other respiratory diseases. The TAC is low in pulmonary TB, therefore supplementation with a suitable anti-oxidant may be useful.

Four Cases Of Myotonia Congenita In A Turkish Family*, Recep Aygül, Gökhan Özdemi̇r, Di̇lcan Kotan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Myotonia congenita is a rare muscular disorder with autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive inheritance, and is characterized by painless myotonia. A 44-year-old mother presented at our clinic with a son and a daughter, all sharing the same complaints of difficulty in relaxing their hands and beginning to walk, and spasms during chewing. The family had also another 16-year-old daughter, but she had no such complaints. The mother reported that her father and 2 sisters had the same disease, but that her brother was healthy. Their pedigree analysis revealed that the disease was present for 3 generations and had an autosomal …

After conventional aqueous disinfectant solutions, it was shown that microorganisms were still protected in hair follicles. We hypothesized that those aqueous disinfectant solutions when used in combination with alcohol may be more effective on the inhibition of recolonization of skin and therefore catheter tip colonization. Materials and methods: Skin surface samples were taken from epidural catheter insertion sites prior to catheterization, and before and after disinfection with different combinations of povidone-iodine, chlorhexidine, and alcohol. Before catheter removal, cultures were taken once more and tips of the catheters were cultured. Results: Catheter tip colonization and skin culture results of 10% povidone-iodine …

Effects Of Grape Consumption On Plasma And Erythrocyte Antioxidant Parameters In Elderly Subjects, Aslihan Avci, Tesli̇me Atli, İmge B. Ergüder, Murat Varli, Erdi̇nç Devri̇m, Özgür Demi̇r, İlker Durak, Murat Turgay

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To investigate the effects of ingesting Fructus vitis minuta (black grape) on plasma and erythrocyte antioxidant parameters in elderly subjects. Materials and methods: Thirteen subjects (mean age 74.67 ± 0.58) participated in the study. They consumed 1 g/kg body weight per day of dried black Maraş grapes for 1 month. Before and after these periods, fasting blood samples were obtained, and oxidant (as MDA) and antioxidant (as SOD) parameters were studied in erythrocytes. Also, plasma samples were obtained from the subjects. Results: In the erythrocyte hemolysate, MDA (malondialdehydes) levels and SOD (superoxide dismutase) activities were found to be lower (P < 0.01) in the second samples compared to the first ones. Conclusion: We think that because free radical production was decreased SOD activities were not increased. Our results show that reduced peroxidation processes caused by Maraş grape consumption suggest that grape consumption has beneficial effects in elderly subjects.

They also contribute to the innate resistance against microbial pathogens. The present study examined the effect of microorganisms such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), Serratia marcescens (S. marcescens), Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS), and Candida albicans (C. albicans) on cytokine secretion in bone marrow-dendritic cells (BM-DCs). Materials and methods: The levels of cytokines in culture supernatants of the BM-DC were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: DCs stimulated by microorganisms produced large amounts of TNF-\alpha, IL-1\beta, IL-6, and IL-10. The …

Prolidase plays an important role in collagen metabolism, matrix remodeling and cell growth. The aim of the study was to comparatively assess the serum prolidase activity in rheumatic and degenerative heart valve diseases. Materials and methods: The study included 26 patients who had undergone valve replacement due to rheumatic etiology (Group …

As a response variable, anaemia levels were categorised as a dichotomous variable, and the predicted probabilities were …

Restricted Universal Guidelines For Rop Screening: A Possible Misguidance For Middle Income Countries, Ömer Erdeve, Begüm Atasay, Saadet Arsan, Fi̇gen Batuoğlu, Huban Ati̇lla, Tomri̇s Türmen Jan 2010

Restricted Universal Guidelines For Rop Screening: A Possible Misguidance For Middle Income Countries, Ömer Erdeve, Begüm Atasay, Saadet Arsan, Fi̇gen Batuoğlu, Huban Ati̇lla, Tomri̇s Türmen

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The objective of all studies evaluating retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening criteria has been to minimize the number of infants screened while missing no patients with ROP who required treatment. Studies supporting the recommendation that screening for ROP could be restricted to infants born at less than 30 weeks of gestation with birth weights of less than 1250 g have been reported recently, especially from Western countries. However, with the lack of local outcome data, application of the new restricted screening guidelines to infants in middle income countries may lead to misguidance. We aimed to investigate ROP screening requirements in …
