This module is a self-guided PowerPoint presentation intended to be a self-study session that provides an overview of the clinical anatomy of thoracic outlet syndrome. The module was created by graduating doctor of physical therapy students in order to enhance and reaffirm knowledge that had been attained in the classroom. The authors sought to combine the classroom knowledge with a greater understanding that they had achieved as a result of clinical experiences. Chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) remains one of the most serious and challenging symptoms oncology nurses encounter in caring for patients receiving neurotoxic chemotherapy. CIPN is under-addressed, under-reported, and symptoms are minimized by healthcare providers, which adversely affect patient quality of life, physical function, and emotional well-being. There is an absence of research examining nurses’ knowledge and practice behaviors related to CIPN. The purpose of this study was to explore oncology nurses knowledge, practice behaviors, confidence, and the relationship between education, experience, and knowledge specific to CIPN.

Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) were impacted by the storm. CRNAs were required to be on duty during the storm and SRNAs’ education was disrupted by the storm. This dissertation is a compilation of three papers that represent the initial exploratory research into the impact of natural disasters on CRNAs and future CRNAs. Studies have demonstrated that perceived health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of patients receiving hemodialysis is significantly impaired. Since HRQOL outcome data are often used to compare groups to determine health care effectiveness it is imperative that measures of HRQOL are valid. However, valid HRQOL comparisons between groups can only be made if instrument invariance is demonstrated. The Kidney Disease Quality of Life-Short Form (KDQOL-SF) is a widely used HRQOL measure for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) however, it has not been validated in the Veteran population. Tahun 2005-2008 terdapat 30 kasus suspek flu burung di Kabupaten Tangerang, meliputi 18 kasus confirmed dan 16 kasus meninggal (case fatality rate = CFR 87,5%). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui upaya pencegahan flu burung di tengah masyarakat Kecamatan Cikupa, Curug, Pasar Kemis dan Sepatan, Kabupaten Tangerang pada tahun 2009. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah efikasi diri, pusat kendali, dan persepsi tenaga kerja dapat dijadikan prediktor yang akurat untuk memprediksi pencapaian prestasi kesehatan dan keselamatan kerja (K3), serta untuk menguji apakah model pencapaian prestasi K3 yang disusun dengan melibatkan interaksi tenaga kerja dengan lingkungannya cukup tepat. Dengan pendekatan cross sectional, penelitian dilakukan terhadap 200 orang responden pada perusahaan kayu di Kalimantan Timur. Salah satu penyebab utama angka kematian bayi yang tinggi adalah masalah berat badan lahir di bawah 2500 gram (berat badan lahir rendah). Berdasarkan data dari Statistik Rumah Sakit Indonesia tahun 2005, sekitar 40,7% kematian bayi disebabkan oleh berat lahir rendah, pertumbuhan janin yang lambat, malnutrisi janin, dan gangguan yang berhubungan dengan kecukupan masa kehamilan. Angka BBLR di RSUD Pasar Rebo pada tahun 2007 mencapai 8,7%. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui berbagai faktor yang mempengaruhi berat lahir menggunakan data rekam medis RSUD Pasar Rebo. Neuroinflammation is a major driving force in the progression of neurodegenerative disorders. Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, as well as cannabinoid CB2 receptors, have been shown to have strong anti-inflammatory properties when activated. These effects are shown, in vivo, to be a result of stimulation of α7 nAChRs and CB2 cannabinoid receptors. Microglia cells, an immune cell in the brain, are shown to express both of these receptor subtypes. The studies detailed herein, investigated the ability of two compounds, nicotine and Δ9-THC, in modulation of inflammatory processes. Stimulation of these receptors on microglia using nicotine and Δ9-THC blocked the activation of these …

Hepatitis B virus is a member of the hepadnavirus family. The hepatitis B virus core gene codes for two proteins viz. core protein and pre-core protein. These proteins assemble to form particles viz. HBcAg and HBeAg respectively. The structure of the HBcAg has been widely studied but very little is known about the structure of HBeAg. BACKGROUND: One virulence property of Borrelia burgdorferi is its resistance to innate immunity, in particular to complement-mediated killing. Serum-resistant B. burgdorferi express up to five distinct complement regulator-acquiring surface proteins (CRASP) which interact with complement regulator factor H (CFH) and factor H-like protein 1 (FHL1) or factor H-related protein 1 (CFHR1). In the present study we elucidate the role of the infection-associated CRASP-3 and CRASP-5 protein to serve as ligands for additional complement regulatory proteins as well as for complement resistance of B. burgdorferi.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, the results of revision total knee arthroplasty have been determined with use of surgeon-based measures such as the Knee Society rating system. Recently, outcome and quality-of-life measures have shifted toward a greater emphasis on patient-based evaluation. The aim of our study was to determine the validity and responsiveness of the Knee Society rating system compared with the Short Form-36 health survey (SF-36), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), and a four-question 4-point Likert scale satisfaction questionnaire following revision total knee arthroplasty.

Phenotypic And Genotypic Analysis Of In Vitro Selected Artemisinin Resistant Plasmodium Falciparum, Matthew Scott Tucker

Artemisinin and its derivatives provide faster clearance of parasitemia than any other antimalarial drugs and these drugs are part of frontline combination therapies in areas where drug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum exists. Clinical resistance to artemisinins is emerging on the Thailand-Cambodia border, making it imperative to investigate mechanisms of artemisinin resistance. Previous work in our laboratory showed ring-stage parasites enter a dormant state after exposure to artemisinin. We hypothesize that this period of dormancy is directly related to recrudescence and prolonged parasite clearance times in patients, and possibly resistance. The target of artemisinin is currently unknown, and potential resistance mechanisms are not …
