Osteocytes are well evidenced to be the major mechanosensor in bone, responsible for sending signals to the effector cells (osteoblasts and osteoclasts) that carry out bone formation and resorption. Consistent with this hypothesis, it has been shown that osteocytes release various soluble factors (e.g. transforming growth factor-β, nitric oxide, and prostaglandins) that influence osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities when subjected to a variety of mechanical stimuli, including fluid flow, hydrostatic pressure, and mechanical stretching. Existing standard treatment options for visceral leishmaniasis are less than optimal. We report here the use of oral miltefosine in the treatment of two paediatric cases of visceral leishmaniasis at a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. One patient came from Balochistan while the second patient was from Northern Pakistan. Both presented with a prolonged history of fever, massive hepatosplenomegaly, anaemia and thrombocytopenia. Visceral leishmaniasis was diagnosed with bone marrow studies. Amphotericin B was first started in the first patient; however severe hypokalaemia and allergic reaction occurred. Neonatal brachial plexus palsy may be decreasing in incidence; however, conflicting reports exist. Regardless, neonatal brachial plexus palsy has an incidence of 1 to 2 per 1000 live births making this a frequent occurrence. The majority of infants with brachial plexus palsy spontaneously recover in the first 2 months of life and subsequently progress to near complete recovery of motion and strength. However, those infants who do not have substantial recovery by age 3 months will have permanent limited range of motion, less strength, and a decrease in size and girth of the involved extremity. Epidermolysis bullosa is a group of inherited disorders characterized by blistering of the skin as a result of minor trauma. We managed an infant with epidermolysis bullosa undergoing inguinal hernia repair. Anaesthesia was induced with oxygen/nitrous oxide mixture and sevoflurane. Oral tracheal intubation was done with a lubricated laryngoscope blade with KY jelly using atracurium 0.5 mg/kg and fentanyl 0.1 microgm/kg. To avoid frictions on the skin, endotracheal tube was tied with ribbon gauze and fixed around the neck. Canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection in stray dogs was studied by using parasitological (fresh blood smear, thin blood smear, thick blood smear, and modified Knott’s test) and serological methods. Blood samples were collected from stray dogs in Bangkok metropolitan area during 2006 and 2008. There were 10% (50/500) of stray dogs infected with D. immitis, which was indicated by using parasitological methods. Microfilaria levels were evaluated from 36 infected dogs and the range of microfilarial levels were between 17 and 78,417 microfilariae per milliliter of blood. The cows were treated with recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) in early, mid and late lactation with three consecutive injections of rbST 500 mg of rbST (POSILAC) in every 14 days. The present study was performed to investigate the in vivo fertility of frozen-thawed (FT) boar semen after intra-uterine (IUI) and deep intra-uterine insemination (DIUI) in spontaneously-ovulating sows. A total of 48 weaned sows were included. The sows were divided into three groups, i.e. natural mating (NM) (n=30), IUI (n=9) and DIUI (n=9). In the IUI and DIUI groups, the sows were inseminated twice, at 24 and 36 h after the detection of oestrous by IUI with 2x109 spermatozoa/dose or DIUI with 1x109 spermatozoa/dose. Three Pomeranians with bilateral lateral patellar luxation (LPL) were present at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. Trochlear block recession was performed on all the dogs. The additional procedures including lateral retinacular desmotomy, tibial derotation, imbrication of medial retinaculum, and/or proximal tube realignment. Medial transposition of the tibial tuberosity was additionally done in one dog. Recurrent right LPL was found and corrected in one leg of the second dog. Following at least 3 months, all three dogs walked, jumped, and put weight normally on the operated legs after the operation.

PURPOSE: This study explores whether meningioma expresses epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and determines if there is a correlation between the WHO grade of this tumor and the degree of EGFR expression.

METHODS: Following institutional review board approval, 113 meningioma specimens from 89 patients were chosen. Of these, 85 were used for final analysis. After a blinded review, immunohistochemical stains for EGFR were performed. Staining intensity (SI) was scored on a scale 0-3 (from no staining to strong staining). Background: An alarming portion of patients develop persistent or chronic pain following surgical procedures, but the mechanisms underlying the transition from acute to chronic pain states are not fully understood. In general, endocannabinoids (ECBs) inhibit nociceptive processing by stimulating cannabinoid receptors type 1 (CB₁) and type 2 (CB₂). We have previously shown that intrathecal administration of a CB₂ receptor agonist reverses both surgical incision-induced behavioral hypersensitivity and associated over-expression of spinal glial markers. We therefore hypothesized that endocannabinoid signaling promotes the resolution of acute postoperative pain by modulating pro-inflammatory signaling in spinal cord glial cells. …

Mutations in collagen II are associated with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, a group of heritable diseases whose common features include aberrations of skeletal growth. The mechanisms through which mutations in collagen II affect the cartilaginous tissues are complex and include both intracellular and extracellular processes. One of those mechanisms involves cellular stress caused by excessive accumulation of misfolded collagen II mutants. We investigated whether stabilizing the structure of thermolabile R789C and R992C collagen II mutants would improve their secretion from cells, thereby reducing cellular stress and apoptosis. The purpose of this study was to determine if the occurrence of parental divorce resulted in negative views and experiences regarding the romantic relationships of the offspring. Four surveys were administered to undergraduate students enrolled in psychology courses at Rowan University. The first survey was used for informational purposes to group participants into two group (those from intact families and those from non-intact families) and to determine the current relationship status of all participants. Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignancy of terminally-differentiated plasma cells, and the second most prevalent blood cancer. At present there is no cure for MM, and the average prognosis is only three to five years.
