Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine if a surface electromyography (sEMG) assessment of swallowing is better at identifying Oral Muscular Dysfunction (OMD) than a clinical evaluation (observation & digital palpation) of swallowing. The assessment was conducted on children ages 9 to 17, who were patients at the Orthodontic Department at Loma Linda University, School of Dentistry. Additionally, the prevalence of a “perceived” swallowing dysfunction was assessed.

Social neuroscience offers a promising way to understand some dimensions of adult attachment. Arginine vasopressin (AVP) is a neuropeptide with significant implications for human social behavior and it provides an important testing ground to explore links between social/interpersonal neurobiology and attachment. It has a distinctive impact on the social/relational behavior of certain male animals, most notably prairie voles. It fosters monogamy, creates attachment to both mate and offspring, and increases affiliation and a desire for physical proximity with other animals of the species. Cancer screening disparities in ethnic minority women have received much research attention in the last several years due to a marked increase in ethnic minority cancer incidence and poor survival rates (Miller, Kollnel, Bernstein, Young Swanson, West et ah, 1996). Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for Asian American women (Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness, Research & Training, 2002) and, although their incidence and mortality rates are lower than Caucasian women, these rates continue to increase every year. The structure of blood cells and platelets in 11 macaques (2 stump-tailed macaques, 5 long-tailed macaques, 1 rhesus macaque and 3 pig-tailed macaques) were studied using light and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Erythrocytes were non-nucleated, biconcave disks without cytoplasmic organelles. Neutrophils had numerous small specific granules. Eosinophils contained specific granules with a dense matrix and a pale crystalloid body. Basophils revealed large round specific granules. Lymphocytes possessed scant cytoplasm with some mitochondria and azurophilic granules. Monocytes contained a large number of mitochondria, azurophilic granules and endoplasmic reticulum. To investigate the effects of pentoxifylline (PTX) to enhance the motility and fertilization capacity of semen samples with the low-motile sperm in Asian elephants, fourteen semen collection attempts in 9 elephant bulls by manual stimulation were undertaken and eleven ejaculates fitted the criteria of investigation (0-30% motility). They were divided into two groups: poor-motile (0-9% motility) and low-motile (10-30% motility) sperm groups. Fresh semen samples were divided as a control group and 3 experimental groups that were supplemented with PTX at a final concentration of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/ml, respectively. The experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of supplementary organic and inorganic zinc on the laying performance and zinc deposition in eggs. One hundred and eighty laying hens (ISA Brown), aged 36 weeks, were randomly divided into 5 treatments with 4 replications of 9 hens each. There have been many reports on the efficacy of the polysaccharide peptidoglycan (PG) isolated from durian hulls in assisting wound healing in pig, dog, and cat skin. In this report, a two - year - old and a three -year - old female mongrel dogs with infected open wounds and skin necrosis were treated with PG film dressing. Complete wound healing in both dogs occurred within 14 weeks of treatment. PG film dressing may effectively promotes wound healing. The results show the benefit of using PG film dressings in pharmaceutical and veterinary applications.

Objective: To identify predictors of outcome in patients with Dengue Infections at a tertiary care hospital and to analyze that if pattern of Dengue infection is changing in the past two years.

Methods: We reviewed 225 cases of confirmed dengue virus infection. The diagnosis was confirmed by presence of IgM antibodies against Dengue by ELISA in addition to fever according to WHO criteria.

Results: From years 2000-2004, 30(73%) had Dengue Fever (DF), 10(24%) had Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and 1(2.4%) had Dengue shock syndrome (DSS) while after 2005, 107(58%) had DF, 71(39%) had DHF and 6(3%) had DSS. Six …

Objective: To examine the relationship between asthmatic pregnancies and selected maternal and neonatal outcomes in a representative cohort.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at the Aga Khan University Hospital during the year 2004. A random selection was made of 65 asthmatic and 63 non-asthmatic singleton births. The neonatal outcomes studied were birth weight, premature birth and Apgar scores at 1 and 5 minutes. The maternal outcomes studied were number of hospital admissions, and number of documented UTI during the studied pregnancy and past history of abortions and stillbirths.

BACKGROUND: A key aspect of representations for object recognition and scene analysis in the ventral visual stream is the spatial frame of reference, be it a viewer-centered, object-centered, or scene-based coordinate system. Coordinate transforms from retinocentric space to other reference frames involve combining neural visual responses with extraretinal postural information.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We examined whether such spatial information is available to anterior inferotemporal (AIT) neurons in the macaque monkey by measuring the effect of eye position on responses to a set of simple 2D shapes. OBJECTIVE: To determine the demographic features and clinical outcome of children with Factor XIII deficiency.

STUDY DESIGN: Observational case series.

PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, from January 1996 to December 2006.

METHODOLOGY: Records of all hospitalized pediatric patients with discharge diagnosis of FXIII D, on the basis of factor XIII assay 5 mol/L urea test were retrospectively reviewed and abstracted on a pre-specified proforma. Demographic features, coagulation profile, family history and outcomes were noted.

Background: The open gingival embrasure or “black triangle” is a visible triangular space in the cervical region of the maxillary incisors. The purpose of this descriptive study was to examine relationships between stress physiological signals and stress behaviors in preterm infants during periods of environmental stress. The study used a repeated-measures design to examine the relationships between environmental stressors, sleep-wake states, and both stress physiological signals and stress behavioral responses in one group of preterm infants. Measurements of these variables for each preterm infant were recorded every two minutes during four 60-minute observation periods (two in the morning and two in the afternoon) conducted over two days (one morning and one afternoon observation each day). Experimental obstacles have impeded our ability to study prion transmission within and, more particularly, between species. Here, we used cervid prion protein expressed in brain extracts of transgenic mice, referred to as Tg(CerPrP), as a substrate for in vitro generation of chronic wasting disease (CWD) prions by protein misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA). Characterization of this infectivity in Tg(CerPrP) mice demonstrated that serial PMCA resulted in the high fidelity amplification of CWD prions with apparently unaltered properties. Using similar methods to amplify mouse RML prions and characterize the resulting novel cervid prions, we show that serial PMCA abrogated a transmission barrier …

p66Shc is shown to negatively regulate the life span in mice through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Recent reports, however, revealed that p66Shc protein level is significantly elevated in several human cancer tissues and growth-stimulated carcinoma cells, suggesting a mitogenic and carcinogenic role for p66Shc. In this communication, we demonstrate for the first time that p66Shc mediates androgenic growth signals in androgen-sensitive human prostate cancer cells through mitochondrial ROS production. Growth stimulation of prostate cancer cells with 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is accompanied by increased p66Shc level and ROS production, which is abolished by antioxidant treatments. Background: Monogamy, together with abstinence, partner reduction, and condom use, is widely advocated as a key behavioral strategy to prevent HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa. We examined the association between the number of sexual partners and the risk of HIV seropositivity among men and women presenting for HIV voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) in northern Tanzania.

Methodology/ Principal Findings: Clients presenting for HIV VCT at a community-based AIDS service organization in Moshi, Tanzania were surveyed between November 2003 and December 2007. Hugo Münsterberg is widely regarded as the founder of the discipline of psychology and law, and the publication of his book On the Witness Stand (1908) is considered the signal event in its founding. However, numerous other researchers were conducting and publishing research on psycholegal topics in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and at least one other book on psychology and law— G. F. Arnold’s Psychology Applied to Legal Evidence and Other Constructions of Law (1906)—appeared prior to the publication of Münsterberg’s work. This review examines the large body of toxicological and epidemiological information on human exposures to chlorpyrifos, with an emphasis on the controversial potential for chlorpyrifos to induce neurodevelopmental effects at low doses. The results of this review demonstrate that the use of urinary 3,5,6-trichlorpyridinol (TCPy), a metabolite of chlorpyrifos as a biomarker of nonoccupational exposure is problematic and may overestimate nonoccupational exposures to chlorpyrifos by 10-to 20-fold because of the widespread presence of both TCPy and chlorpyrifos-methyl in the food supply. Current "background" (nonoccupational) levels of exposure to chlorpyrifos are several orders of magnitude lower than those required to inhibit …

Sekitar tigapuluh persen kematian bayi terjadi pada periode neonatal yang 80 % di antaranya terjadi pada minggu pertama. Pada periode 2004 - 2005, kejadian pre-eklampsia berat pada ibu hamil di RSUD Bayu Asih Purwakarta meningkat dari 15,2% menjadi 23,6%. Peningkatan kejadian PEB ini diperkirakan dipengaruhi faktor pendidikan, pekerjaan, umur ibu, paritas, umur kehamilan, riwayat penyakit, dan pemeriksaan antenatal. Penelitian ini bertujuan melakukan analisis berbagai faktor determinan pre-eklampsia berat pada Ibu hamil di RSUD Bayu Asih Purwakarta. Penelitian dengan disain studi case control ini dilakukan pada 133 kasus ibu dengan pre-eklampsia berat dan 133 kontrol ibu dengan non pre-eklampsia berat di RSUD Bayu Asih Purwakarta tahun 2004-2005.
